This is an accurate depiction. In Greek mythology Athena was the goddess of strategic warfare (the bit that requires actual thinking) while Ares was the bloodshed and savagery part. He was frequently tricked and outsmarted by a range of people.

I can't speak to him in Marvel. In GoW, he's sort of a middle ground between Greek and Roman Myth (not so pathetic as the former, but not so noble as the latter). The likes of Athenians would have been writing the tales. They took their historic L's, but they were going to tell things differently while Spata kept quiet. Consequently (coincidence, I'm sure), Ares is dabbed on all through-out the tales while the patron of Athens (Athena) is sliding left and right (super favored). He was a jobber owing to such things. That Marvel should depict him this way is perfectly reasonable (this ain't Mars). A bitch to the core. A god of strife, bloodshed, carnage, brutality, etc. Not a winner (Victory herself is best friends with the Grey-Eyed wisdom deity that serves as the peace seeking strategist in that arena). Not a combat specialist at all. He likes battle, he ain't no kind of exceptional at it.

To add context to my previous post, Death Battle stated, as I remember: - Ares caught up with X-Man as he travelled within Planck Time. -Ares got his ass SPLIT by Sentry. - Thor beat Sentry THEREFORE, Thor is faster than Sentry and Ares and faster than...well... EVERYTHING! From my research, and correct me if I'm wrong, but Ares has only shown to be this fast once and it is because Ares, being a Greek God, must be present within every setting of history and time unless erased from existence. Simply, no matter how fast you run, the ground is still with you. It remains still but is still present. Additionally, all the God's are aware of where they are and must be at all times. It doesn't mean they can outrun their opponents. It means they absolutely know that you are outrunning them. I'm happy you made posts about Ares and Mephisto because, OH MY GOD, their feats are taken out of context.

@@BigSirSplash You know more than I since I'm a big DC fan, but that opens a rather massive plot hole in all of their characters. If they are super strong and infinitely fast, they should never lose a fight. Like no one could ever think or go as fast as they can. Even in comics, it would be virtually impossible for them to ever be caught off-guard, outmaneuvered, or even winning a fight before it begins.
