Hydrocortisone cream can be used once to twice daily. Even though a diet is grain free, a dog can be allergic to the meat(chicken, lamb) or the carb(rice, peas etc). Fish and potato is the most reliable. Natural Balnce has excellent limited diets

Was curious about dandruff on dogs... I bathe her with head and shoulders cuz it worked 4 my dad's dog but it's not working my little girl. I even thought about putting lotion on her... But was to scared to. And I want to thank you for always sharing and helping keep our babies in good health!

I hope you find something that helps. Fish/potato and duck/potato sometimes helps as well as home cooked chicken and veggies like in Feed Your Pet to Avoid the Vet or Dog Dish Diet. Some dogs end up needing meds like prednisone or cyclosporine or antihistamines like benadryl.

Could be a flea allergy, food allergy, or hay fever. Many pugs have both hay fever and food allergy. Feed a limited ingredient diet like fish or duck and potato. Quit feeding wheat, corn , barley in biscuits! Check out Dog Dish Diet or Feed Your Pet to Avoid the Vet at dogdishdietcom

Hard to know without a look, but dogs can have an allergic reaction to fleas and become both painful and itchy. Cortisone topically or orally can really help

He probably has hay fever as well as food allergies, Grasses or weeds he runs through can make his paws itchy. You can try benadryl at 1mg per pound twice daily to see if that helps. You can also help his skin resist by enhancing the oil barrier. Feed fish oil caps, sardines, eggs like I talk about in Dog Dish Diet or Feed Your Pet to Avoid the Vet

You can get an anti fungal shampoo from the pet store and use it twice weekly. Make sure not to feed them food or treats containing wheat gluten. Food changes can help cure them. dogdishdietcom

You are correct! (of course) :) I went to the Vet today because she just wouldn't stop 'popping' up and down and she said the same thing. She gave my pup a shot of steroid and an anti-histamine to take orally for a course. She's MUCH better this evening, they also expressed her anal glands which were 1/2 full as they described. It's a fix!! Thank you again for your wonderful videos.

Hi Doctor Martinez, I have a 1 year old female chihuahua mix and a 7 year old male Shih Tzu and they are both very itchy. I can't use the flea drops on the male because he's had seizures from those and the flea shampoos, sprays, ect. don't seem to be having any effect whatsoever on them. I feel terrible because they itch so bad but I just don't know what else to do. Can you help me?

If your dog had seizures from the spot on treatments that could be you didn't give him the right dosage for his weight and for flea and tick shampoos you got to bathe them often until you see none. Also you can't just treat pets you got to vacuum your whole house and wash all your bed linens to get rid of all the eggs and maybe treating the yards if their fleas in the yards. It's gonna take you several weeks before you see the results but that's the best treatment.

hey thanks :) yes poor dog sometimes cant go potty with out sneezing 6 times. after their breakfast i give them omega flax seed oil jell capsils they love them! i personaly dont feed my dogs dry food when i adopted my dogs one was so fat when he layed on his side his legs stuck straight out and i had to do something! i give them a balance of grains like oats,brown rice, buckwheat, and mizx protein liek eggs, fish, meat and add broccoli or spinach leafs, i figure its better than canned crap

I have a question. My 2.5 year old Shih Tzu recently had fleas. I found her scratching and biting and I did a check and found a couple fleas. I flea shampooed her, flea combed her and applied some of that topical flea ointment between the shoulder blades and hind quarters as directed. I noticed a couple hours after application, she began 'jerking' 'popping' her back end/legs area. I called the number on the product and was told to wash it off with Dawn dish soap. Today is the 2nd day

Also dogs and cats are meant to eat raw meat like theyre relatives in the wild, my cats are on a whole prey diet (where most of my money goes), and my chihuahua is on can food, cuz he's picky, and i gradually wanna make the switch.

Raw meat is really good, but it can become contaminated by bacteria if not handled safely. Some dogs are intolerant of certain animals chicken, beef, pork. That raw meat is not good for the allergic ones

I have an idea that worked for me. Id cook it & add corn flour gravy then thin the gravy cook meat less then pour boiling water over meat to make dog think its cooked then cut out the water. Also feeding by hand to all animals at same time as competition for attention is likely to help get something into your fussy eater. Also regular feeding times after exercise so they are hungry

since application and she's still popping/jerking her rear area/legs. I can't tell where it's coming from exactly but the back of her body 'jumps' and it's pretty continuous unless she's asleep. She does bite the back area but I think it's because of the sensation she's having and not knowing how to react to it. She has no spots, fleas or anything else I can see at all. She's eating and when she's up and moving the 'jerking' isn't there. When relaxing or sitting quiet, it starts up again.

I changed my dogs food to hypoallergenic and gave her fresh garlic too. For ear mites I use Thornit canker powder great for dogs and cats and rabbits kills the mites straight away. Google it and find out more information about the powder. good luck with your animals. xxxxxxxxx

Hi Dr. Martinez, my Chi-Weenie Maleficent, is 1 yr 7ms, and is always scratching behind her ears(she has bald spots), and has "dandruff", and sheds a lot! She eats Blu Buffalo Red Meat dry dog food(because she's extremely picky with dog food!) and I cook for her as well. Could this be an allergic reaction to the dry dog food, as she has no fleas? Is there a cream that can be used to relieve itching (that is safe to be ingested as surely Bat would lick it off)? I believe Bat has hay fever and food allergies and right now it's been a struggle to find out what exactly is causing itchy rashes all over her. She is on a grain-free diet, so I must be missing an extra ingredient. She never stops itching.

The paws itch. Try wiping them with warm water daily to remove allergens(pollens, molds, grasses). Holistic vets use dilute witch hazel and oral local honey 1 tsp daily. You can try benadryl at 1mg per pound twice daily. A little licking can just be habit

I was hoping you would talk about dry skin itching. My 7yr old pom was born with a #6 heart murmur and the vet wasn't very optimistic on her life span. Gigi was put on lisinopril & lasix after about a yr when she started coughing a lot. These meds help with the coughing but I think the lasix also dried her skin out. She scratches quite a bit but doesn't have red, irritated skin. She does have dandruff tho. What can I do to relieve her itchy skin?

I've had good luck with it. Very few dogs get an upset stomach when given the meds and need to get used to it or be fed at the same time. (administer with food)

DIATAMACEOUSE EARTH for flees & worms but you need to put a hunky over the head as it can be inhaled which is not good. Great wormer tho with none of the poisonous side effect & it tastes like earth so animals don't have a problem with it. Can't over worm either

I have two Pomeranians, a female and a male, the girl is only 4 years old and she has a fungus that grows on the back of her neck towards her head and it almost feels like the pad of her foot, so we took her to the vet and she confirmed it was a fungus and scrapped it off and it grows right back. Money is tight these days so is there any home treatment we can do instead of the medication from the vet? also the male gets scabby itchy places on his belly.

Hello Doctor. my dog has been very itchy for about 5 out of her 6yrs. we have taken her to the vet and dermatologist but she is still itchy. she is on another round of simplicity which has helped with inflammation and infection. her odor has gone down. She is also on half a pill a day of zyrtec and 1/4 of apoquel. We did the food allergy process with the Vet. she was on Royal Canine for weeks and now thats been ruled out. She tends to scratch more when outside and slides on her butt too. she is a female chihuahua about 5pounds. I bath her twice weekly as recommended. I honestly don't know what to do anymore. she used to be on prednisone which helped was taken off of it which was affecting her kidneys. Can you please help me? thanks!

He may not be able to control when and where he poops due to age. If that's it, he may also not walk in a straight line. He may need a hypoallergenic grain free diet to help his inflamed butt area. He may need his anal glands checked out
