@SuburbanK9DogTraining10 күн бұрын
@@RadioFreeAnarchy That makes sense! I use both with my own dogs as well. Stay means stay and when released they might not get to go to the distraction. @user-bx4ov2qy8b6 ай бұрын
Right. So why would you say the word "come" and tug at the same time? That causes the dog to associate the word come with an unpleasant sensation. I would use a sharp "no" with the TUG, and then repeat the come command in a neutral or friendly tone so that the dog wants to comply. (Later, simply one "no" will stop the dog in his tracks (no leash required), rather than being one of those people who uselessly shout come-come-come to their distracted dog.) In other words, negative correction ("no" and tug) with an error, then encouragement with the come command so the dog feels no apprehension in willingly approaching you (not being tugged toward you). Ditto with the "heel" command: if the dog doesn't heel, use "no" and a tug, then a loose or guiding leash with the word "heel" until the dog responds appropriately.
@kirbyvacuummadman18146 ай бұрын
@@user-bx4ov2qy8b Was your comment directed at me? Your comment has nothing to do with what I said.
@SuburbanK9DogTraining6 ай бұрын
@@user-bx4ov2qy8b This is a common question and the answer is fairly long. The summarized version is that dogs are smart and they do not make the association that come is bad when you give a correction. They learn that when they hear "no" after ignoring you that they will be corrected. We like to give a correction at this point to remind them what they are supposed to be doing (come). The beauty of dog training though is that there are many ways that can all work very well. The way you describe will certainly work and there is no issue with it, it is just different than how we do it. We cover this topic in detail on our podcast and in other training videos. Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment!

@@user-bx4ov2qy8b I REALLY appreciate this comment because I have taught my dog to come and for come to be a positive experience. I was trying to think of a work around of that and you nailed it. @integritymatters511411 ай бұрын
I always separate “come” and “close”. Close always meant be within about 20 yards of me, which was useful for bird hunting. If i repeated close they learn to be more like 10 yards and so on as I want him free but near me, without being at “heel”. I love these basics.

@SuburbanK9DogTraining8 ай бұрын
@@isubiez There is nothing wrong with "ok" as your release word. The reason we use "free" is that it is rarely said in conversation in an excited voice. "Ok" is often said in an excited tone and in theory you could accidently release your dog from a command without knowing it. That being said, the risk is pretty low and I would worry too much about it.

The release command is crucial. Sit means sit until I tell you something else to do or until I release you.
@robinrutherfordcost474811 ай бұрын
We teach an enthusiastic recall. For two weeks we only care about the enthusiasm so no sit at the end until you have the enthusiasm down pat. Grab the collar BEFORE giving the high value treat that is only used for the recall (so filet mignon, steak, bacon - whatever the dog will do back flips for - only used for recalls - no other time). Also, one time only - dog's name, recall word). If you're the type of person who every other word out of your mouth is the recall word (like a lot of you tubers) then you have to change your recall word - it's sacred, so used only three times per day only with that highest level treat). Hope that helps.
@SuburbanK9DogTraining11 ай бұрын
Agreed completely on having a clear phrase for recall that is only used once per recall. We coach clients on "praising the dog all the way in" when they are early in the training process. This means they would use "Name and Come" and then a steady stream of happy talk to the dog to keep the dog's focus and energy on them. The happy talk can be anything other than reissuing the come command over and over.

Unfortunately the human condition sometimes, gets in the way. In my experience very few humans with a dog understand the nature of the dog, by that i mean they dont know the group the dog belongs to. Out of the 7 groups, every dog sits in one or the other. So, if you have a dog that belongs to, say the working group, is a hound, has a visual prey drive as opposed to a scent drive, recall for this breed will differ from, say a husky, or a pit bull, or a mastiff etc etc etc. Trying to get a visual prey drive breed to respond with insufficient methods will result in failure and confusion. My advice to any of the people i come into contact with is to research the group your dog belongs to and study the characteristics of that breed/group. It will help understand the method that undepins a succesful outcome........ Helping humans speak dog is a triky business and needs to be understood by both teacher and student....🤷♂🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
@Yupppi10 ай бұрын
I really like your style. At any point you're not implying the dog negative feelings, just that the response by him was negative in the sense of not desirable. But the little correction after stopping the action still feels like a positive experience. You're not mad, you're not punishing, you're just stopping and giving the keyword "no", then fixing the action. It's sometimes really difficult to come up with the more abstract proxies, and like what if the dog is just not distracted when training, but in a real situation the dog becomes distracted and doesn't have that response to focusing to the task.

Yes they absolutely do. Most people get pups after they have been whelped and don’t see or hear the mom correcting them. A simple guttural growl or groan from the mom can immediately change a pup’s behavior. A trainer once put in perspective the common issue when a dog goes through the trash can while you’re at work and the second you get home you of course yell/punish the dog. Even if it was an untrained dog, it would not matter in a video, remember it is through constent repitition that the dog wil learn not to ignore the recall, it is time consuming as you have to scan for opportunities where the dog makes the unwanted choice not to immediately respond to his recall command. It is also not the time to start teaching your dog what the "no" command means, the dog must first understand the "no" and "come" command means, before progressing to this next step, I believe it was a great training point that was given here.

I've had two pointers and a pointer-mix. In general, I've found them easy to train. Consistency is the key. Sometimes it helps to imagine you trying to teach someone who doesn't understand your language and has no idea what your gestures mean. Never punish a dog for not knowing something. Only punish them when they DO know and behave badly anyway. In general, when you're starting out with a dog, don't consider that they have learned a behavior until they've done it 40-50 times without error. And you should work with the dog EVERY DAY. I find that feeding time is a good time. My dog brings me her bowl to let me know she wants to eat. I get her food and put the bowl down. Then we spend about 10 minutes reviewing commands... usually not more than about dozen or so. If she fails at any of them, the training session goes on a little longer. When performance is perfect, I tell her to "get it, get it, get it!" which means it's "CHOW TIME!" Her level of enthusiasm spikes during the training session because she knows that at the end of it she's going to fill her belly!

She has gamed commands except for sit and now stay, since the first week at 6 weeks. Basically listens calculates the treat value and runs off. I finally got a treat that is irresistable and she has stopped gaming coming inside after stratching at the door. I am trying the come command per your directions in the video. I have a Beagle that has only been trained with reward markers (clicker or “Yes”) for looking in my direction, then treated when he arrives. Started in quiet small room, repeated in larger spaces, with distractions. No corrections were necessary. If you pattern a positive interaction whenever the dog comes to you, you can eventually start rewarding only for the FASTEST responses. If you don’t give your dog a worthy reward for coming, or it leads to a negative consequence when they come (such as a nail trim/bath/reprimand) you get a dog who is conflicted since they’re unsure of what may happen. My neighbor’s dogs encourage my dog to bark at the fence. Even if he’s in full bark mode, he’s happily run into the house if I call him.
@SuburbanK9DogTraining11 ай бұрын
I’m glad your dog is doing well! We have trainers around the country and see hundreds of dogs each year that have spent a long amount of time doing positive only training. They come to us because the dogs learn the commands and listen in some situations, but can’t be trusted off leash in new situations. If your dog can be trusted off leash at the park that is awesome! Unfortunately many dogs need a consequence for disobeying when the distraction is more exciting than the reward. If there isn’t a consequence many dogs become a danger to themselves by running off.
@mdw9088 ай бұрын
@@SuburbanK9DogTraining You're insinuating that R+ training is the cause for their dogs to not listen in certain situations. An important concept in ALL types of training is the "3 Ds": distance, distraction and duration. A cue/command must be trained using all three of those Ds and the dog has to be "proofed" to the point that it can still respond to the cue when ALL three of those concepts are in play. The dog has to be trained well enough (and he CAN be with R+ only) that he will come from a distance even with distractions. YOU have to be more exciting than the distraction--and if you're going to scold me when coming to you when called then guess what? I'm going to avoid you. I'm not totally against corrections but they must be used judiciously. If you have a dog that is consistently running off, then that dog is not ready to be off leash in an open area and YOU are putting that dog in danger, as well as other people/dogs.
@SuburbanK9DogTraining8 ай бұрын
@@mdw908 It sounds like we in agreement on many things! We explain the three Ds to clients every day and believe in spending a lot of time in the proofing phase. I also agree that if your dog runs off consistently they should not be off leash in public. That is why we like to show people how to use a long line. The part we are not the biggest fans of is having to be more exciting than a distraction. I have seen way too many dogs over the years that could not be trusted off leash because they find distractions more exciting than their owners. Those dogs will need a correction of some sort to convince them to listen in very exciting situations. Overall, we consider off leash training to be the greatest gift anyone can give their dog and just want people to spend time thinking about the process and then working hard with their dogs!

Why in the world would you make regular hygiene practices a negative experience? It just stresses out you and your dog.

@@SuburbanK9DogTraining I think the problem between the positive and balanced community is we’re looking for two different things. Positive people are concerned about how their dog feels throughout the process, safety of the dog, public safety, and realistic expectations. They can have their dog off leash and responsive, but they pick which situations based on their dog’s skill. Balanced trainers work with clients who want complete control of the dog regardless of the situation. The issue is have with this is you don’t know what’s going through your dog’s mind. I work in veterinary behavior, where we see dogs that were “blowing off their owner” so the stim level was increased to get compliance. The dog then associated the correction NOT WITH THE BEHAVIOR, but with something going on when the stim happened. I had one that became afraid of grass, another that would not go outside in the area where it occurred, others who generalized to being anxious anytime they were on a walk. This will not happen to every dog, but it is a possibility that many owners are unaware of.

A good presentation with a good explenation. My dog ( German Shepperd ) I bought because his owner did not threet him nice and the dog learned nothing from the outside like streets, woods, bikes, cars, other people, dogs, cats, ect. I start with training him on a quite parkingplace and walk in the woods. The barking is a little less but it takes time to learn a dog on the age of 2 years old how the world is. Pulling when walking is much more less and I can throw a ball already and than he comes back to me. When other people or dogs are there it is a nightmare and that happens in the car too. He likes to learn a lot but he always see things like playing. I be patience and go on training and this video helps a lot. THANKS for that.

Try that with animals that can kill you and you'll end up hurt. If I get kicked at by a horse you better believe that won't happen again for a while. I'll be less gentle doing my chore of grooming and shoding. I will get the job done and leave. Horse gets a small alphalpha hay well after I am done and packed up and leaving. We've a beagle mix (rescue from Tennessee) that is such an awesome dog, but she just does not do recall. She's only a year and half old and is pretty much trained up on everything, except following a recall command! This video is great, but she is not in any way treat motivated, she has a high chase play instinct (we learnt long ago not to chase her, but to wait patiently and positively reinforce when she does come), isn't hugely affectionate so petting doesn't reward her that much I feel, so when it comes to being outside, recall is a serious problem. Inside, she does fetch brilliantly. Outside she'll chase a ball, but then leaves it where it is. When she has escaped the house, she's gone for 2-3 hour sprees and it takes the whole street to catch her. Wanted to see what your thinking was! This video is great, but we've tried a lot of this and starting to think an e-collar is the only way to go at this stage...

An e collar can be a great option! When it is done properly it is not stressful for the dog and is a fun process. Here are two videos that will show you everything you need to know about how to train your dog on one. The first video shows how to acclimate to vibration. The vibration is meant to be a good thing (we pair it with "come"). That being said, many dogs are nervous when they first feel the vibration. We generally use food during this process just to make sure the dog knows the vibration is a good thing. In the second video we show how to acclimate to the stim function. This is meant to be a correction for when the dog messes up. We don't use any treats in this video and rarely use them for this part of the process. Great question David! Five months is not too young. Here is a newer video we did with a young pup on a long line. He is trained without treats and you get to see some corrections in the video because he is newer to the process. kzbin.info/www/bejne/inmZi4JmgbtqfcU Regarding the length of the long line, I generally recommend the ling being at least 1.5 times the distance you plan on letting your dog get from you. This allows enough wiggle room that if they run away you should still have enough line to stop them. 50-100 feet is what most of our clients use when starting in a true off leash setting with no fences. Great question! We do not give a treat if we have to correct for the command. Here is a link to a more recent video we did that shows the correction process in more detail. kzbin.info/www/bejne/inmZi4JmgbtqfcU Let us know if you have any question after watching it!

Thank you for your help. Can i ask something , what happens when the dog is not on the leash after the training, I mean , is there a possibility that the dog realizes "hey , there is no leash for him to pull so i can ignore him now that i am free". Or it doesnt work that way in dogs mind. Again thank you for you great videos

Great question! We chose it as a featured question on our podcast. We shot it this morning and that episode comes out later next week. There is a possibility that can happen, but if you do enough training with the line on they start to forget it is there and start to act "natural". Also, you can do some follow up training in a large fenced in area without the line to make sure they do well without it. For more info definitely check out the podcast on Spotify or Apple.

Thank you for the video! I need to work on my dogs listening when there are squirrels around. They are perfect when there are no distractions.... I get distracted the same as you.. ha!

We love training around distractions and proactively seeking out times to train around them. Unfortunately the squirrels are never around when you want them to be! 😂

My female Jack Russel was rescued from the streets of Sydney's Kings Cross and I have no idea of her background but a neighbour saw that I was grieving for my 17 year old Maltese X who had died from old age..We were both a mess and hit it off immediately. Her loyalty and obedience was unbelievable and she comes every time I call her with no training from me at all. She may wander off after chasing a rat a long way away where my voice just doesn't carry that far so a toot from a $2 horn gets her running back to my arms.

Thanks for the video, we will try this with our dog. We thought he had a good recall until there were people (he loooooves meeting people) and once a big bird. He just totally ignored us and ran to greet them (or eat them in case of the bird😅). I was so ashamed. Thankfully they were nice and liked dogs. Don't wanna imagine if he does this to someone who might be scared of dogs or something. Anyway, he is back on his long leash now and training starts anew.

There is definitely no shame in your dog making mistakes! Dogs love to eat birds😂😂😂 I love to hear that you are working hard to address it so your dog can enjoy a fun life of running off leash. Reach out with questions any time!

Thanks for talking about what to do when they don’t listen lol. So many videos are an already trained dog and just what to do not what to do when they say nah

Do you have recommendations for a barking dog? He used to be good and only sometimes bark at other dogs. Now, as he gets older he barks at everything that passes in front of our house. He is a 7 year old english sheeper/doodle.

Is your pup good at the heel command? If so, we use heel as a calming technique in the house when a distraction occurs. We have someone pass the house, heel the dog until calm and then drop the leash once they are doing well. We then repeat the process until a leash is no longer needed. This may sound like a lot of work but it actually goes very quickly. I hope this helps and pleased feel free to reach out with any questions!

My trainer taught me this Tasha good dog Brighton uk. I we to her from 6 months old till just under 2. He recalls to me every single time no matter what he is doing he bounds over to me and sits and waits and looks at my full attention.
