Global Health with Greg Martin

10 жыл бұрын

This was a live Panel Discussion in which questions about working in Global Health were asked by students. Questions like: How do I find a job in global health? Should I do a PhD? How do I network in the global health space? And many more.
Global health (and public health) is truly multidisciplinary and leans on epidemiology, health economics, health policy, statistics, ethics, demography.... the list goes on and on. This KZbin channel is here to provide you with some teaching and information on these topics. I've also posted some videos on how to find work in the global health space and how to raise money or get a grant for your projects.
Please feel free to leave comments and questions - I'll respond to all of them (we'll, I'll try to at least). Feel free to make suggestions as to future content for the channel.

Watched nearly all your video's and it starts to feel like you're my new professor! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us! A topic I am personally interested in: pain relief for terminally ill patients in low income countries.

Hi tipitree - I'm delighted to hear that you've watched the videos. Thanks very much for the suggestions. Pain relief and palliative care in developing countries is a neglected topic and you are right, we should do more to understand it. I'll look into making a video on that subject. Please do send any other questions or thoughts (I'm very appreciative of the feedback!) Happy day. Greg

Grear videos! I have been following your channel for a while now but never had the chance to really look at all your content till now that I am in summer break. I hope one day to work in malnutrition and food insecurity in developing countries.

Hi Dr Martin. Since Helpouts shut down in 2015, was wondering if you've continued to offer career counseling/ advice to those seeking it on another platform online? If yes, would be great if you could lead me to it. Thank you so much

Hello, this was really informative! I was wondering if you have an ongoing discussion thread where more questions regarding careers on global health could be posed. Wonderful efforts on your end!! Thanks!

This was superb. Brian mentioned quantitative skills, would there or is there an appear for Genomics 🧬 skill sets in global health? Further to that - which skill set is more desirable; Genomic or Health Economics? Or both?

Another great video from this channel. I am very interested in pursuing a career in Global Health. I have a Pharmacy background (BSc.Pharm) but I am not interested in working in the areas of Global Health associated with Pharmacy, I am more interested in Medical Anthropology and Mental Health. I was just wondering if it's smarter to Study a MSc. in Global Health to learn the skill sets needed in the field e.g. Epidemiology, Economics, Policy Making while researching the areas of study I am interested in or pursue a degree in Anthropology/Psychology first then do an MPH?

+Sherif Darrag - really interesting question (thanks). There is no absolutely right and wrong answer here but my gut feeling is that if you are able to find a degree that is a good fit for what you're interested in (anthropology / psychology) and I would get stuck into that asap. That said, you can never go wrong with an MPH and some MPH programs do give you some flexibility and you might be able to do a lot of anthropology in your MPH. Anyway - good luck - it sounds like you have an interesting career ahead of you.
