The man could always sing. He knew his instrument was his voice. He mastered it. Look at how he adjusting the notes to a lower level PERFECTLY. The key changed, but everything else is the same. Genius!!!

Used to listen to this when in the army in Rhodesia. There was a fantastic DJ on Radio Harare called Wellington Boots Mpofana, who used to end his show at midday by saying “Guys and Gals, it’s time to go, to go away, so why not Drift Away with Dobbie Gray”. Great song and a great man ❤️🙏

I heard a great story that the song was written for Elvis to sing. Dobie was just a demo studio singer. Elvis heard heard it n said Dobie needs to record it, that he did it perfectly. That lauched Dobies career.

Thanks so much for putting this up. Have been a rusted on fan of this superb singer since first heard Drift Away, so many years' ago. It was simply tragic that the recording business just did not know how to showcase his superb singing talent, beyond maybe 1-3 vinyls. Had the privilege of seeing him live in concert, in Melbourne, Australia. The highlight of the night, July 14, was when he sent the band off the stage. All there was, just Dobie and a single spot illuminating him, He did not need a band with that powerful, soaring voice. He almost lifted the roof off the venue with his rendition of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, a 30-year later version is on KZbin, just have a look for it. Pity that the signature Les Paul playing intro riff by the late Reggie Young, is not a part of this version. Also, so very sad, that Dobie died with a neglected website, nobody is even sure of his real name, date of death, and more. So much unrecognised talent. Have visited the studio at the original Quadrophonic (now Quad) owned at the time by Norbert Putnam and David Briggs. Could hear Dobie's voice resonating from the past studio walls. Just enjoy as much of this legendary talent's magnificent singing as you are able. He is a vocal treasure.

R.I.P. Dobie Gray.. Thank you for the awesome music.. ..>"Drift Away" is a song by Mentor Williams (Paul Williams brother), written in 1970 and originally recorded by British singer Mike Berry on his 1972 album Drift Away. A version by John Henry Kurtz was released two months later in November 1972. It was later given to soul singer Dobie Gray for whom it became a surprise international hit. In 1973, the song became Gray's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 and receiving a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Great song BUT try Singitlive or HSCC from Adelaide. Australia. A better version all round. I know the fat guy, Stefan, on guitar. That and the singing is a truly great version. BTW Christie McVie of Fleetwood Mac heard their sound through her Australian security, then Mick Fleetwood. After an Australian tour they'll take up residency in Las Vegas ( they won't tour). All great musicicians and singers.
