I was so blessed, and priviledged to get to know Mr. Gray. I was his nurse for a few weeks and did all I could to make his stay with us comfortable and pleasant. I am not the kind of person who gets starstruck by famous or VIP people. He was an amazingly kind and real person. He was full of love and shared many stories with me. He was an honorable man, with strong moral convictions. Was appreciative to all of us and what we did to help him. Never a better patient did I ever have. I grew to care for him as an individual and I treasure that time I had with him. What a gift! What a good memory to have from a very difficult and hard career. Patients like Dobie made it all worth while. RIP my dear friend. You were more than your fame, you were a blessing to me by sharing your testimony of salvation through our Lord Jesus. I'll never forget you.

@fancifulfilly8 жыл бұрын
Who cares whether you believe it or not? It's hardly a glamorous tale, or the kind of thing you adolescents invent. That is not a far-fetched story at all. Somebody had to have been his nurse at some point in his life. Likely more than one person, since most people go in the hospital a few times over the course of their lives. And, if the nurse loved the patient's songs, he would be one they'd be apt to remember. Likely you disbelieve her because she didn't invent any dirty laundry that you're so eager to hear. It isn't customary for nurses to snap pics of their patients. In fact, it would be most unprofessional.

I think Dobie's version became a big hit because it is very soulful, which was popular at the time. Also, in Dobie's version the music quiets down and Dobie's singing almost sounds like he is opening his heart up and baring his soul. That's what's missing from many other recorded versions.

@@michaelmaniscalco2191 I'm a 15 year old who really wishes they were born in the 60s. While I understand that there was a lot more injustice, people werent as rich, and a lot of modern items I take for granted werent around, I feel like the complete freedom and wiggle room for fun in life was so much more prominent then. You could do so much dumb stuff and get off the hook. Life wasnt all about chasing that extra 0.1% in profit and instead it was about living life. The cool ass cars really dont hurt, but that's besides the point

@@olegkolesnikov7155 people had more wealth on average in the 60's compared to now. The dollar when further. You had more buying power, college was affordable. That isn't to say they were more rich. Some people are highly more wealthy today but on average the working man, makes less and the unemployment is higher. Also racial tensions are higher. plus maybe see this so you may understand why racial tensions are often inflamed. invidious.fdn.fr/watch?v=FwwNH_r2muw .

@Clint Dixon ya what I should have said I was this song reminds me of when I was a kid which for me was simpler lol
@Triton10515 жыл бұрын
Clint Dixon Mr. Archer, I tend to agree it was a simpler, I'd say better time; in many ways. I'd ask the "negative Nancy's" in which decade were we in the US NOT in a war? I know a lot of people who agree that today's stress level is ten times higher than then. One difference being that Vietnam got extensive coverage and the press was still _somewhat_ free to show the real casualties. And people actually protested. Where are the news anchors; 'inspiring' protests around Libya or Afghanistan? Seen anyone march recently? I think the sharp focus on the 'bad side', (yes, there's _always_ been a 'bad side', duh), ignores the things that were magical about the seventies. The music, "the dawning of the age" reasonably enlightened populace. I won't go on, but I could. I think people today are WAY more "uptight", way quicker to anger, and stressed out far more than the folks who used to say, "do your own thing". That seems more authentic to me than, "you do you", which a weak, watered down, insincere (?) derivitive. I took a minute to think before writing this as well, a luxury many folks don't have today, working two jobs to make ends meet can preclude real dialogue at the best of times. Houses were more affordable than now. Ok I ramble, hope I've made my point...

Big hit during June of 73. Other covered it , but no one did it better than Dobie Gray. Hear the wood blocks throughout, and the fine guitar playing!
@williamvogelsang2492 Жыл бұрын
The "wood blocks" don't come in until the beginning of the second verse and stop at the end of it. This sound doesn't play all the way through the song. The significance of the wood blocks is that of a ticking clock when the verse goes "Beginning to think that I'm wasting time". There ARE "rim shots" a bit later, but no more wood blocks.
