We headed up to American Canyon to visit Spence at WEIR Performance. He taught us the proper way to clean and prep a rear end before installing an LSD, welded differential, or spool.

Thank you for teaching me how to clean my rear end I’m finally learning a good way to do it at almost 23 years old. For me it’s definitely the front end first it’s had some lubrication issues recently and it’s very contaminated

Nice video, good info. I use engine flush myself. I also cut the paint brush down some to get a stiffer brush and cut down the handle to get behind the lip.

Thanks for the paint thinner suggestion. I was trying to clean my differential cover to watch for new leaks, but four other chemicals did nothing to the caked on oil.

Mineral spirits may be a petroleum product but DO NOT MIX IT WITH YOUR USED MOTOR OIL. I used to work in the oil recycling industry. Used motor oil is refined into marine diesel for use in large container ships. When we get the tanker back to the yard the samples we took before pumping it have to be tested before it goes into the tank farm to wait for a hazmat waste hauler to pick it up and take it to a refinery. The first test is done at collection before we pump the waste oil out of its storage tank. It's a chlorine test to see if any city water has gotten into the oil. If it fails that test you have to call someone else to haul it away as hazardous waste to be burned at a power plant as it will not be able to be re refined into diesel or motor oil. The next test is done in the lab before pumping into the tank farm. This test is called a flash test. The flash test determines if the oil is flammable or combustible. Gasoline is flammable, diesel is combustible. If the oil fails the flash test that means it's contaminated with gas, solvent, brake cleaner or some other NOT OIL substance. At that point we have to waste all that oil and send it off to a power plant to be incinerated and then pay THOUSANDS if not over a MILLION to clean out the tanker that hauled it. If it wasn't tested and it made it into the tank farm then it will be over a MILLION to clean out all the pipes, pumps and tanks that are contaminated. Put contaminated petroleum products in with your oily solids NOT YOUR MOTOR OIL. Oily solids get burned for electricity. Oil gets refined and recycled!!!!

Why not drained as much as you can then pressurewash with soap and water first removing all the sediment and then going over with mineral spirits to cancel any kind of rough situation. I think that would be faster and more proficient

ive cleaned the housing of my 1.8 torsen diff, should i touch the lsd at all? maybe wipe some of the old grease off before refilling?

What if I used three cans of brake cleaner and it stayed wet the whole time because I had a continuous stream of it going on all three cans?

the only thing I wanna add in is why not take that toilet brush and saturate it in the paint thinner and just scrub the crap out of it? You’re wasting too much time with that paint brush hahahaha I would attach it to a freaking drill and polish that junk up 🤣
