$1200 Limited Slip Differential vs a Free Welded Differential! Is saving the cash worth it? Let’s find out.
Team Hi (James Pumphrey & Zach Jobe) and Team Low (Nolan Sykes & Aaron Parker) have installed coilovers, wheels, and big meaty tires in order to make their cars faster, but we’re not just building these 350zs to be race cars, we’re building them to be fun cars. And what’s more fun than doing some sweet drifties on the skid pad.
To do that, we’re going to be swapping out our differentials... well Team Hi is. Nolan will be doing the time honored option of welding his.
With an open differential, the power from your engine takes the path of least resistance to the wheels. That’s good for allowing the inside and outside wheels to spin at different speeds when taking a turn -which is the reason diffs were invented in the first place. But, if one wheel totally loses traction the open diff just keeps directing more power to it and that one wheel will keep spinning til kingdom come. This is what we call a one-tire fire.
One way to limit that wheel from slipping is with a limited slip differential, or LSD. Team Hi bought a KAAZ SuperQ 2-way clutch-type Limited slip differential! 2 way means that the LSD engages the same amount during acceleration and deceleration. 2 way is generally the choice of drifters, because it keeps your lsd engaged pretty much all the time, which is good for skids.
Another way to prevent that one tire fire slippage and not spend $1200, is to weld the spider gears together leaving your back wheels permanently locked together all the time. This is great in a straight lines and when drifting, but when you go around corners and the wheels need to go different speeds, the diff can’t do its job anymore and the wheels end up constantly scrubbing and breaking traction in small jumps. But sometimes breaking traction is exactly what you want :)

I will never forget the first time I swapped an open diff for an LSD. I was blown away how much more power I was able to put down and how much sooner. That's a phenomenal upgrade if you are serious about driving. For the street on the other hand??? I don't know if it is worth it. As I don't see a reason to drive that spirited on street roads. Maybe I am just older now. ;)

I had an 84 Camaro with 3.73 posi and I now own an 82 with an open diff. Waaay more confidence in the 84. I could push that car hard, drive it in the snow, etc. My 82 now can barely handle it in the rain. If it even smells like it might rain, that car starts spinning. The bigger motor might not help with that though ;)

The metal plate in the middle of the diff was the right idea, and something we (in sweden) learn by trial & error. Just welding the gears WILL result in it failing eventually. The middle plate adds so much more strength its virtually impossible to break (if you weld right). However, long term, because welded diff cant move at all, other components of the drive line do take more damage and wear over time.

As for breaking loose while driving in the town, it generally only happens if I want it too. In the rare event that it surprises me, its so easy to get control of again, it hasn’t been a problem for me.

The Torsen LSD in my car (1995 Miata) is one of my favorite things about the car, but I hate how pretty much everyone I've tried to engage in a convo about it had no idea what a Torsen limited slip differential even was.

I do! I totally freaking get it! I was debating putting front and rear lunchbox lockers in a 4x4 conversion I'm doing to a c10 diesel because of the extra noise, but you're right. I'm building it to scare the normies anyway, it should make extra noise!

Lsd over welded all day everyday. I am sure you will see the difference once those cars hit the track. The more expensive z will start to really improve as the performance of the engine is improved. The more expensive car at its present form will blow the cheap z on a roadcourse.

Most fulltime circuit racecar run a fully locked diff same as the welded one... lsd is fine for daily cars if you don't want to drive really hard
@katsuragimika795

Lsd is way better for time attack/grip scenarios. Locked diff makes putting power down a little more tricky and the car will "push" more without the different wheels speed throughout the corner
@DmOcRsI
@DmOcRsI 4 жыл бұрын
I was pretty put-off by them making statements without getting it on a track... the LSD makes a HUGE difference in handling. Also, a welded differential just eats tires on a daily and if anything does break, it's not going to be the differential, it's going to be an axle.
@puprilla
@puprilla 4 жыл бұрын
The issue with these cars is that there is a gear oil pocket inside those differentials that once it burns up it goes from being a limited-slip to being an open diff I did this to mine which is why I bought one and welded it and it was way better is better in the snow it was better in the rain it was better in the sun I knew exactly what my rear end was going to do and I knew it was going to put the power down when I wanted it to instead of skipping
@craigsampson3386
@craigsampson3386 4 жыл бұрын
@@DmOcRsI also puts extra jarring load on the tail shaft and uni joints. I've got a mini spooled diff which acts the same as a welded diff but just stronger/reliable, but I've had to replace uni joints. Especially so when you've got a supercharged car doing clutch dumps from stand still lol.

My '65 Mustang has a live (solid) axle. It chirps the inside tire if I get aggressive on the throttle in a tight turn, but I like squealing tires so it's not a problem for me. I dug a furrow in the road outside my house when the chip seal was still soft.

I run Lincoln lockers in a jeep and a trooper front and rear. No problem. And just broke a axle recently lockers still holding. The only thing I can say is don't weld a plate if you are running c-clip axles. I wasn't sure how it would be but I don't have much money but do have a welder. I can say I love it and will be welding them from now on. If you weld the front it is best to have manual hubs. Or in the case of my jeep it has a center axle disconnect with cable. And I can still flat tow it. I trailer it but I did do a flat tow test and it tracked straight. Hope this helps someone.

I've had both on the same car. I prefer my 2 way. Just have to watch out sometimes decelerating too quick the rear end will lock up, If I were to buy a diff now I would go for a 1.5 way just because i'm not into drifting as much as I used to be. Problem with a welded on a daily is you definitely eat up your rear tires a lot faster and its very hard on your rear suspension or axles on every small turn. Also a welded diff your car wants to go forward, can be more prone to understeer if you don't want to break traction and drift around a corner.

If you can get an extra set of gears from a stripped out diff, you use 2 gears ground down and jammed in place of those plates! If the welds cracks, it's still pretty locked up.

I would be curious to know how or if a lunchbox locker would work for the purpose of drifting & drag racing. I ran one up front in my Jeep & loved it....for the most part. They are much cheaper than a new LSD or air/electric locker so there could be a better low car option.
