My wife is a "Thousand-Miler" having walked near the "Driftless Area Mystery" on the "Ice Age Trail" and travelling the major roads in the "Driftless Area." Thanks! T J (Tom) & Linda Vanderloop, IATA-Ice Age Trail Alliance Member.

I very much enjoyed a 4 day solo motorcycle trip last year in July, traveled from the IL/WI border, up through the Driftless area and curved slightly to the East at the top of the state to arrive at Bayfield. Fairy boat to Madeline Island for the day. Through the Driftless area I felt As though I was in Scandinavia and saw many Amish farms and the people. I used a motorcycle navigation application that kept me on County roads and often off of state highways. This was odd since even state highways are quite remote. The weekend of my trip was the 4th of July weekend and you would have never known that it was the big Summer holiday with such a lack of traffic. I also was blessed with the most perfect weather. So, on the top of my list for this Spring & Summer is retracing my steps and do it all again. I took my time, stopped in many tiny towns to stretch the old legs and drink a Coca-Cola. After all it was my first motorcycle trip in 35 years and on my brand new bike just purchased 30 days before this trip and 1,700 practice miles under my belt before leaving on this trip. I highly recommend the Driftless area no matter what the vehicle driven is and a perfect family trip too.

Here in west central Wisconsin, at the very northern edge of the Driftless area, there is an ancient meteor impact site. The crater is 4 miles in diameter. If this happened when the glaciers were approaching could this have melted the glacier in this area and help prevent glacier encroachment in the driftless area?

look up the Willamette valley Oregon meteor for a possible answer. It's likely an older strike.
