You can easily tell how much these guys love flying small aircraft and evolving technology that compliments the experience. I also get the feeling the pilot/owner is as proud of his outstandingly beautiful Vans RV7 as a work of art as Michelangelo was of his Sistine Chapel.

I did a tad bit of work on this plane with Brian. I will share one story because it will stick with me and it is exemplary of how builders need to control emotions when building. There was a service bulletin on the horizontal stabilizer. This meant, roughly speaking, taking off his already fabbed HStab and drilling some holes, adding a stiffener, re-riveting, et cetera and even then his research told him it just didn't feel right. Instead, he just swallowed several extra days of work and built a whole new HStab without having to look back and wonder if something wasn't "just right". The Colorado on the VStab is such a beautiful touch to the paint job. Only regret is he didn't sign the Van's calendar he sent me :)

Interesting. What differentiates a good builder from a bad one from what you witnessed with those 7?
@quinnjim
@quinnjim 4 ай бұрын
@@dabneyoffermein595 Everyone claims to be an "expert" builder. The truth is MOST RV's are built by "first timers" who don't know what they are doing. The RV-7 seems to be a little better since the kits are more likely "quick build" (which means a lot of the holes were drilled at the factory). I had one RV where the fuel tank was about 1/8" forward of the rest of the wing. Another had the bolts that hold the tail on done incorrectly. The builder missed the beefed up structure that the bolts were supposed to go through. Other ones had bad fit and finish. A pre-buy inspection by a guy who KNOWS RV's is absolutely critical. They are wonderful planes if built correctly. Many are not put together right.

I met this guy while ferrying a plane myself.. I might have left some druel on it, it is spectacular. Slightly disappointed in the lack of IFR capabilities though. I did see that he has provisions for a CS prop in the future, the throttle quadrant in the center console has the slot to add a prop lever! Did you see the engine is painted (including the pushrod tubes) like the interior?

@@brianbeattyRV7Pilot in the video you mention it’s challenging to hand fly the plane. Why is that? Does it not trim out well?
@brianbeattyRV7Pilot
@brianbeattyRV7Pilot 2 ай бұрын
@@derekradcliffe3313 actually it trims out quite nicely. The issue is when flying long distances and at the speed it flies, the plane will change altitude very quickly in turbulence. So the autopilot really helps manage the unstable air. In calm air she flies straight as an arrow.

Great question. It’s because I have about a 205hp engine and it redlines at 3300rpm. So I can push the prop to 2850-2900rpm. The trade off is I’m guzzling gas. But it gets up and goes. This prop, Catto - 68” diameter 74” pitch is a banshee on both ends.

how can you trust electronic touchscreen system ,,imagine you have an elctrical issu ? is there any other navigation system
@bdbeatty
@bdbeatty 9 ай бұрын
Valid question. First, each of those screens are solid state electronics on independent electrical systems, meaning they are isolated from each other on power. Second, they each have their own backup battery as well. So the likelihood that both screens would "crap out" is extremely unlikely. Third, each screen has its own dedicated air data and GPS sources. So again, the likelihood of all of those going out at the same time is almost nil. Fourth, I have an iPad that maintains a full charge off to the side and that too has it's own situational awareness both moving map and artificial horizon. And lastly, my iPhone also has the same separate map source. So, in essence I have four separate GSP, air data, and electrical systems in operation. The chances of all four suffering an outage would be the result of some other external factor that no plane system could respond to. I feel very safe when I fly. I also don't fly IFR so I can have more "outs" to choose from.

What sort of mechanical/fab/electrical background does Brian have? Is this project one that anyone can learn to do with enough practice or do you need to have a professional background working as a mechanic/builder in order to turn something like this out? Obviously he didn't build the engine but he did fab that really nice center console so I'm just wondering what sort of skills that requires - is it "advanced" metal cutting/forming skills or is it something that you could learn by doing during the project? And is this true FADEC?
@bdbeatty
@bdbeatty 2 ай бұрын
Howdy, John! All great questions. I work in a technical field (forensics) however, I am not an engineer. I have always enjoyed working with my hands and building things. But I don't have any specific plane building background before this. I did help other with their plane and I can tell you I've spend hundreds if not thousands of hours reading online build logs from other builders, and watching videos of other builder before me. That's the beauty of the RV community, it's big and very helpful. I did attend an EAA Sportair workshop for electrical and for fiberglass. There were also very helpful in learning a lot about building certain aspects of the plane. I was fortunate enough to have the panel built for me by Aerotronics, they are a custom build shop that focuses on avionics. Many of he features, like the center console, I did have to basically design and manufacture myself, but that honestly is the fun part, you just see what you can come up with. This system is not FADEC system, those are becoming popular now, but it was a little too new when I was getting close to done back in 2018-2019 so I opted not to try it. I hope that answers your questions, happy to answer any more you have. Cheers

@gusalj6759

This is a kit, the factory in Aurora Airport, Oregon will pre-laser the holes at time of manufacturing making it very easy to locate it and hand drill it later when you select the sizes of the screws or rivets that you will use to build it, otherwise, you have to measure and pre-fit everything, which is not easy at all.
