The rest of the car community needs to know the correct way to do coilovers height adjustment. Seen so many just adjusting the bottom bracket losing the actual bumpstop function. Hats off to phil for shedding some light into this

A lot of manufacturers instructions say to adjust the base height with the bottom adjuster and only use the spring perch for final corner weighting.

A suggestion, don’t use copper slip on aluminum, the copper is reactive and can cause galling. Lithium, Nickel or Aluminum grease is best 👍

These will warp or straight rip out your rear strut towers without reinforcements or at least a strut bar (and maybe with them if you’re in a rusty place). I have personally seen this with my own eyes at a local drift track with a different brand but same design, zero hate to what is probably a great product!

Same as stock, and all forces are still opposing so no flex.

I gotta say , I don’t think the top shock mount of the body would be strong enough to support the whole weight of the car? I mean it’s only usually supporting the damper, the spring perch takes the weight of the car on a significant part of the chassis. I would only fit these if a cage was tied into the top mount otherwise the inner arch will distort to hell.
@driftworks

A lot of generic coil over kits seem to come with spring lengths that are too short for the damper stroke and coil bind can hit in compression before bump stops. I’ve chased this before pulling the springs off to understand the damper and bump stops. There is a ton to consider in setting up correctly. You have a corner weighted car with different ride height at each corner: do you not need to ensure the ARB drop links are free to rotate when the car is static on flat ground and not when at droop to ensure the ARB is not preloaded at static ride height?
@driftworks
@driftworks 13 күн бұрын
Correct, it wasn't mentioned in the video, but all the settings that were transferred from the MonoPro kit had the anti roll bar drop links removed during corner weight and alignment & adjustments made with the wheels on the ground.

What's the chances of DW developing a HSD / CS2 kit for the Porsche 996 AWD platform?, good quality, sensibly priced coilover kits are very thin on the ground for these cars.

Hi Phil can you give me any specs on this kit and the hsd kit as you are using them on the e30. I have a Ford Sierra with extremely similar set up to your e30 and was hoping I could get open and closed lengths etc. I want an inverted type kit and want to use this kit as I am using e34 bmw rear hubs and plan on using e36 front hubs, pretty much a carbon copy of your e30, any specs would be greatly appreciated as if I can use the kit I will purchase it. I may need the hsd kit as the top mount on rear of Sierra is a lot different and I’d struggle with having the adjuster there

FYI there is no benefit to putting the spring on the rear damper, all that will ever do is add friction in the damper (basically reducing small input sensitivity and "plushness" and adding harshness in their place) due to the sideload from the spring and move the spring load path into places that are not designed to take the extra spring loads. Seperating springs from dampers is only ever a good thing from a damper performance perspective. You are now expecting the rear damper lower bolt (single shear IIRC) to deal with the spring loads on top of the damping and bump stop loads which would be my own major concern, primarily from a reliability perspective but also installation stiffness wise (i.e. the bolt will act even more like a spring that is undamped than it usually does = not great). Noting that E36's are also pretty well known for cracking strut tops does suggest this is a very retrograde step also... Secondly, it would be good to see dyno plots from both the HSD's and these dampers as you can pretty much guarantee they are both digressive in bump (maybe not in rebound) just as pretty much every OEM damper fitted as standard on pretty much all cars made in the last 20 years or so are. Its a good thing sure, but its really nothing special. I do love your video's as you do explain that you are not experts who love to muck around with cars, but just occasionally you do trot out some info that is really not great and this is one of those cases where the "upgrade" will only ever be retrograde in reality. P.S. I also once bought HSD Monopro's from you for my e46 wagon and they were OK. You really do have to tighten the locknuts on the ARB droplink attachment though or you lose tyres pretty quickly in the middle of corners...
