In this tutorial, we review using holes saw, including the Freud Quick Change System.
For many woodworkers, hole saws are one of the handiest, seldom used tools you will own. Few, if any, tools can make holes in hard to get at places, or on plain flat surfaces better than a hole saw which is a funny name for what is really just a different version of a drill bit.

Wow that is quite an improvement on the hole saw and nice that they include a adapter so you can use your existing saw bits. Lots of those for will be under the tree this year. Thanks for sharing Colin.

I used this type of hole saw in making steel wheels for barn door hardware. I cut out two pieces of 1/4 inch steel and then a slightly smaller diameter of 3/8. Weld the two to the side of the one and I have a wheel that will run up and down a steel track.

Thanks for the review, very good comparison to cheap ones verses the latest idea from Freud. That they can cut more than just wood and what speed to do so with was good information as well.

So that Freud arbor is awesome. However, I will say if you're trying to drill a lotta different size holes with different bits, that little metal bushing that's threaded on the outside can get practically welded onto the hole saw bit after a few cuts. If you have a buncha bushings or those hex nut things that connect the bit to the arbor then I'd just put one in each hole saw and never have to worry about it. But I think they only give you two (one of each size) when you buy the arbor. Just wish you didn't have to take the hole saw over to the vise to undo that connecting piece.

Thanks for sharing a nice video. Did not know about the quick release system. Good info. A little trick I've used for years on 3/4 or thicker stock is drill half way thru then flip the board over. Makes the plug much easier to get out.

This whole saws are for general-purpose, you can get ones special for wood. They have 1 to 5 teeth depending on the breed. And will cut through timber plastic and other such materials. Faster and cleaner then any general-purpose ones. I like the Quick release Harbour looks great.

Good video as usual. The part about using your old style hole saws may not be the best advice. The purpose of the old style pins is to stop the hole saw blade from jamming on the thread of the adapter, using the Frued adapter without the pins your hole saw will jam on the Frued adapter and could be difficult to remove. I use hole saws a lot, love them, but for me they kind of go hand in hand wih expandable drum sanders.Hey I haven't seen a drum sander video yet! just say'en

That Freud Quick Release system is very interesting. How much does it cost? Where to buy? Shipping to Europe. We use holesaws 68 mm for making holes in drywall for electrical switches and outlets. A hole is drilled in 15 seconds and taking the piece of drywall out is terrible work, and this in spite of having a rather expensive holesaw with a spring in it. Thanks for sharing and I hop you can answer my questions.

Hi Colin, something you didn't cover and I would like to know. Do the Diablo hole saws have a removable screw in adapter that can be removed so you can use a regular holesaw arbor that go in the 2 holes?
@kerryflatt5391
@kerryflatt5391 3 жыл бұрын
There's a MAJOR design flaw in the provided adapter nuts included with the quick change kit that this video fails to mention or illustrate. If you're using the quick change with Freud/Diablo hole saws that are meant for it, in other words the hole saw arbor nut is welded to the hole saw, these are a great tool to have and work great. HOWEVER, if you use the provide adapter nuts on older hole saws, if for any reason you need to reverse the drill (since there are no pins holding the hold saw in place) the adapter nut just simply unscrews leaving your hole saw stuck in place. Additionally, if you use a larger hole saw with the adapter nut, you MUST NOT release the drill trigger once you start drilling your pilot hole because the "flywheel" motion of the hole saw weight allows the hole saw to unscrew rapidly and fly off the adapter nut if you stop the drill, creating a very dangerous situation. You'll notice in the video at the 7:03 mark he never lets off the drill trigger after starting with the pilot hole and engaging the hole saw. This flaw SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY FREUD by somehow adding locking pins to this system.

The diablo/frued arbors and hole saws do not last worth a damn. There's a ton of play in them as well so the hole saw wobbles around a lot. Great concept, but bad quality product. Used them for 2 years and came to this conclusion.

What's the point in telling us what the RPM is for different materials? Great in a drill press maybe but not if you're using a hand drill. Good information otherwise
@knecht105
@knecht105 8 жыл бұрын
Well Paul, for more experienced guys like you who already know that harder materials should be drilled slower, not much, but for all those woodworking newbies at least knowing the speeds, even if we don't know them exactly, at least it gives a bit of a guideline on speeds, that's all :)
