My favorite part of boot camp was the DI lying to us constantly then “teaching” us about honor courage and commitment. The hardest part of boot camp was not laughing when they went on their “integrity” rants. Dudes told us for every competition that if we won we’d get our phone call that we were supposed to have already had. Never got one call, not even to tell our parents when we were graduating and when to be there. Then the shit birds were constantly drunk in the barracks at night. The best night was the night before the crucible, they rolled into the barracks at 0100 or 0200, drunk as fuck. They were trying to fuck with the entire platoon to “make us tougher”……they all fell asleep at the first station of the crucible they each got to. My squad slept the entire first day of the crucible. It was a joke. I didn’t meet an officer, NCO or SNCO I respected until I got to ITB. Also only ever met one DI in the fleet that was an actual skilled Marine in his MOS. Almost forgot, I did get to see my senior DI arrested by shore patrol in Okinawa. Lmao, he literally sprinted past me while I was puking under age on the street of gate 2 off of Kadena. MPs right behind him chasing him. Looked at my libbo buddy and said “that was my DI”. Him: “nah you’re drunk”. Me: yelling “Senior Drill Instructr!” Lmao drunk fucker stopped running and started to respond right as the MPs tackled him. Best night on libbo ever.

I’ll take one part back, I almost forgot about Drill Instructor Herbert, Pronounced A-Bear as in A Bear shits in the woods lol. Artillery Bubba, wounded saving one of his Marines during a training exercise. He was dropped to our platoon near the end of our cycle for some reason, think we were his first recruit platoon. Other DIs hated him, would talk shot about him to us and to him in front of us. He was actually an honest Marine and never lied to us as far as I know. The rest of my DIs, Perez, Patillo and Henderson can suck a duck. Let me just say I loved being a Marine and I loved the Corps, just next to zero respect for DIs, Recruiters and stupid fucking officers in general. Cpl 3rd Award, 99-06. The Summer of Sand Tour.

First off, that's a nonsense statement, not everybody is capable of teaching, it takes a certain skill to be able to teach. There are people out there who are very good at what they do but can't teach what they do/know worth a damn. Secondly, if you'll notice, none of the DIs are fresh from boot camp Pvts, or PFCs. If you'll notice, 3 of the 4 DIs in the platoon are Staff Sgts. meaning that they've in the Corps for a while. Every DI has bee in the Corps for a while since you have to be at least a Sgt. to qualify for DI School these days and they're generally on or about to go on their second enlistment. They're (mostly) volunteers who chose to go to the drill field, instead of a couple of other choices, in order to further their Marine Corps careers and better their chances at promotion down the line.
