emmettjes Yea, it's definitely is harder than it looks. I was never in the service, but we did something like this in basketball for mental toughness exercises. I didn't understand it in 8th grade, I totally get it now....and it worked. We used basketballs for 5 minutes at a time instead of paper though. One set out in front and one set out to the side. It wasn't easy, and it was always at the end of practice when we were gassed. We were always clutch in close games though. I'm in no way comparing myself to a Marine, just saying I've done similar exercises.

Boot camp is always such a magical place. You discover so many things like how something that weighs maybe two ounces can, after a few minutes, feel like twenty pounds. You also discover what a raw vocal cord feels like and the awesome feeling of always being sick for three months straight. You also discover how repetition really works on the human mind under stress.

@Mike B being a marine isn't just a job, it’s a title that you have to work your ass off and endure hell to earn. There’s nothing wrong with looking back on your life and using hard times you overcame to propel and motivate yourself to move forward. There’s a reason the marines have the modo “the few, the proud” there’s only 170,000 US marines around the world, that’s not a lot at all. Compared to the army for example who has their numbers in the billions. Why do you think there so few? Because it’s not easy, it’s 3 months of living hell, all day, every day, even throughout the night. Then the rest of your 4 years of service. There’s not a lot of people that have the stones to endure that. They’d rather take the easy way out and join the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, or not even enlist at all. There’s a lot of pride in earning the title of Marine. They have the worst pay, they’re treated like garbage, have the worst living conditions, but they’re also the strongest and toughest fighting men and women of the whole military. So you bet your ass they’ll define their entire identity by that 4 year period. Once a marine, always a marine. Semper Fi!

Exactly what I was thinking. The recruit likely thinks he was doing it just to break his balls. But in reality? When you are in combat, you are going to absolutely have push yourself no matter how tired you are to save yourself and the marine next to you no matter how strenuous. Just imagine if you are on the line of fire ambushed running out of ammo - will dropping that ammo can because you are too tired to save the squad be ok in that?... No, you have to learn how to keep pushing or it will get you all killed. Great training technique both mentally and physically..

@@clc-gl4jn actually if you're getting ambushed you will most likely all get wiped out before you even had a chance to react. for example no matter how well trained you are sometimes its just not your day. ask the soldiers that tried to storm Omaha beach in WW2. some boats where all the soldiers got cut down before they even got off the landing craft.

When I was at MCRD San Diego in 1988, we did funny games like this all the time! The all time best was when a Recruit screwed up and the DI told him to start bending and thrusting. The Recruit said he was on light duty, well the DI just about came unglued and started yelling at him to blink his eyes. For the Marines out there they know when a DI says to do something they keep yelling it 1000 times plus! This poor Recruit had to blink his eyes for about 15 minutes and let me tell you he was wore the fuk out! All the while I had to stand 10 feet from this shit show and not bust out in laughter. That Recruit said that was the hardest thing he had done in boot camp! So holding a piece of paper might not seem like much but those Recruits probably just got out of the Pit and where probably tired from bending and thrusting! God Bless the U.S Marines! If you have to ask you probably wouldn’t understand😁. Semper Fi

@Leeroy Jenkins Sir, don't do that, hit me with the CNN liberal talking points. Let's not pretend like your boots on the ground either. I made this comment 4 freaking years ago before "woke" became a Pseudo definition in political arenas, the pandemic was a conversation or George Floyd was an issue. Then here you come with the year is 2021, I said this 4 freaking years ago, I don't have ESP into the future. Yet, you want to die on that Hill? Fine, let's go down that road. You're use the definition of communist incorrectly. A communist is a person whose accepting that the state has all control over political decisions, 0 input from the public is considered, and all services and goods are rendered on the states behalf. Burning down a city doesn't make you a communist it makes you a rioter or P'd off person or group of people. If you're insinuating that BLM are communist and they burned down cities then you better say the exact same about Trumpist on Jan 6th who invaded an entire city and caused Havok where police officers were killed and officers killed themselves after and during this exact ordeal. Also, nowhere in my statement did I imply the military has never defended my freedoms and are fighting random wars in the middle East. You said that free and clear for what reason I don't know. That's like you being asked so you like red or yellow cake and you just offset with a different response such as, "So, you came to the fact that you're going to give me cake from some Honduran sweatshop were kids work to make this cake for .06 cents?" If you don't like the military say that but don't use me to say it indirectly. However, you feel about the military is your business but don't bring that Antifa rhetoric my way. All I said was you have to be intense because it may save your life when you get in the war. You went into something else on your own without any suggestive or substantive reasoning. Easy to talk that down with the military speech when you're not the one to go boots on the ground. It is the military that allows you to even talk the crap you talk on KZbin.

It might seem funny, but when you're in that moment, you begin to see things as simple as the DI's explain them, and you begin to get frustrated with yourself and wonder why you can't do the things they ask -- it's about overcoming yourself and the walls/limits of your abilities. That is the only way anything will change -- that goes for the mind as much as the body.
