Silent Skull739 No. If that were true, then why can you join the Marines, do your 4 years, then get out of the Marines and go right into any other branch of the service without going through their Boot Camp? The drill instructor took him aside and told him to “scream for his life” at the birds on the telephone line/poll. Said they wouldn’t let him leave until all the birds flew away. A couple hours later we were cleaning the barracks before bed and you could faintly hear this poor dude screaming for his life at these damn birds 😂

Honestly Drills, whether DS or DI, are just the funniest motherfuckers lol. I was on fire guard one night at like 3 am during basic, and someone came and complained that the dude in the bunk above him was beating off so hard it was shaking the whole bunk. The drill sergeant happened to come in to do a random check at that moment and asked what this guy was doing out of his bunk, so we explained the situation to him. He asks us to point the dude out and then sneaks up to his bunk, mounts up so that he's at eye level with him and screams "WHO THE FUCK TOLD YOU IT WAS OKAY TO SPANK THE MONKEY ON GOVERNMENT PROPERTY!"

Army drill sergeants went home after supper and recruits had time to smoke, joke and get their gear together for tomorrow. Marine drill instructors are with you 24/7 and the mind games never stop. It’s amazing watching the transformation of a recruit. Served as a Junior/Senior/Chief Drill Instructor in the Marines. It was the most demanding responsibility I encompassed. However, it was also the most fulfilling. It’s a constant competition between DI’s to turn out the best Platoon. You really feed off the motivation of the Privates and more so from the dedication of the other Drill Instructors. Recruits go from being dazed and confused in early training to mean, lean, disciplined fighters by graduation. Great meeting up with so many later in the Fleet and seeing how they’ve come up through the ranks. There is usually a point in training where it all begins to click around rifle qualification time, where recruits see the bigger picture of being a part of something dealing with history and traditions of the Marines who went before you.

In ‘69 I came within 1 line of being drafted into the Marines. In Army Basic the cadre were all Airborne Rangers with multiple Nam tours. 1 per platoon and 1 troop pusher (also AR and Nam vet) waiting for discharge. My MSG was senior, had 3 Silver Stars (senior man left-should have been unit award, psychotic break, earned it). My pusher also had a Silver Star earned in a psychotic break. They didn’t have to yell. When they spoke we listened. “If you get sent to a unit where you need to know how to march, they’ll teach you. Not all of you will draw combat MOS, but that doesn’t mean you won’t go to Nam and get into deep s**t. We’ll try to give you tips that will improve your chances of survival…some aren’t taught in Advanced Infantry Training unless you get lucky.” Over the years since then I have read articles indicating that the primary/duty MOS of many Marine DI’s aren’t combat arms, probably because they need more than 1 per platoon I guess.

@Ivan Getsukdov I’m not familiar with how the Canadian armed forces conduct basic training, but it’s probably similar to that of any other Western nation. Pay attention, apply all that they teach you on how to shoot, don’t get nervous about it, and you should do okay. They don’t seem like nightmares, they just seem like goons. It’s amazing anyone actually learns a single thing with that kind of absurdly toxic behavior. It’s no wonder SWAT crushes every branch in drills and games-they actually treat each other with respect and train like human beings. And I’m not even talking about veterans who go SWAT either.

@@jasonfrost5025 the whole point of marine boot camp is to break you down, then to build you back up so you don’t break under pressure

@@minhle2315 Studies show that this doesn't work well at all. Like the other dude said, treating eachother with respect yields better trained, disciplined and motivated soldiers. Most other NATO countries has stopped the "break down, build up", because, to no one's surprise, it's bullshit way to create warriors.

I've seen both Army DS's and Marine DI's in action, first hand, and this presentation captures the different approaches admirably and accurately. The Army, which is necessarily more democratic and egalitarian, and must have less demanding entry standards in order to allow for a broader recruit base and to meet its high numerical requirements, does "build men". It coaches the recruits into the soldiers they must become. The Marine Corps, which is required, by law, to maintain four divisions, is naturally much smaller, can be more restrictive of its selection pool, and is more demanding. Faced with the stories he has heard, the volunteer has basically resolved that he IS a Marine, before he signs in. Boot camp is to force him to find his inner Marine, to push him and challenge him and provoke him to prove himself, to himself. If he washes out, he didn't believe he was a Marine. Basic Training makes the recruit chisel away the junk that impedes his Marinehood, and shows him the way the Corps functions, so he may do his chosen duty and accomplish his mission. It sets a high goal of resourcefulness, proficiency, personal pride, drill and appearance standards, which he attains because he knows they are his, and he wants them. Drill Instructors don't make Marines. They challenge the fledglings to TAKE their legacy, as Marines. Both Services are good, and their trainers are excellent. But their methods are different, because their premise and approach must be different. They both fight for America, but while the Soldier has his unit to be proud of, the Marine has to sustain the reputation of the entire Corps. It's a heady concept, but very real. That may explain the difference in training, for those who wondered. God bless Liberty, and all who defend it.

However, its the Army that wins a war, fellahs. The Marine Corp has always felt it was under pressure to justify its existance, remember there have many attempts to disband it, ignorant attempts IMHO, because a navy, and navy, DOES need a land operating force, to secure the coast, etc., and in the US, it goes beyond that, in WW2 it was a shocktroop landing force on small islands. But because Marine brass has always felt a need to justify itself, they have overinfalted their importance with friendly reporters and bogus PR. Take a look at WW1, Belleau Wood. It was two Army divisions that chewed up the Germans, but one the 1 brigade of Marines got the press because Marine brass finagled the bogus story by reporters, Floyd Gibbons most notably, and played it up, embellishment, not journalism. The "devil dogs"(teufelhunde) was bullshit invented by an American correspondent and was never used by the Germans. Marines have gotten way more than their fair share of war reporting, some of it clearly propaganda, but in the end, its the Army that has won every one of America's wars.
