@@MHS_ART I have a couple batteries for my DeWalt hand drill & I bought an Xtra battery (18 or 20 volt, i forget which they are) & charger for it. One thing i will say is... if it is windy... it doesn't fight the choppy water well. You'll get where you wanna be , but it's just THAT much more drain. I went out last year & forgot an anchor for my rowboat , so i kept having to use the drill gun to maintain my position & THAT makes the batteries drain pretty fast. If your in smooth waters , your good to go. DON'T 4GET YOUR ANCHOR ! !

elvis presley thank you so much for responding! I know this is a older post. I have a dewalt with two 20v batteries. Gonna order the rod tonight. So I’m guessing use it off and on this way the drill don’t burn up? Well thanks again Elvis

@@MHS_ART ...Naw , the drill was fine.... What i do on calm waters is....run it for 5-10 secs...let the momentum carry me a bit & shorts blasts now & then. When u put your drill on fast , you really move atta good pace , so it doznt need ta be on ALL the time. You gotta be ready for some KICK when ya put it on fast, almost takes it outta your hand if ur not ready for it lol.....Enjoy Brotha ^ ^

Watched this to see how to stear with this in a kayak. Looks like it's ok except for a bit awkward and maybe heavy. I would only use it if I got down the current and hard to paddle back on one of these Florida spring runs. haven't tried yet but, will next week. Thanks for sharing your experience. Looks doable.

Girl not being mean but I thought you were gonna fall in at one point. I think it's a great idea but heavy to bring a 19.5 volt drill with you, and the chance of dumping it overboard. And in the cold drill batteries don't keep therr charge as well. so the life would be decreased in the cold. I think I would want this combined with a rudder.

I’ll give it a miss. The price of a quality drill, spare high capacity batteries and it’s a fact that drills aren’t supposed to be used under such strain for periods of time, so will be worn out before long mean that a trolling motor and battery will last longer, be more reliable and cost less in the end. If you’re going to use it to take you to a point on a lake, anchor up, and fish for a couple of hours and then use it to come back, it’s probably fine for that. But it wouldn’t be all that difficult to row that distance for free and risk damaging or loosing a good drill.
@Grablifebythefish1

I've been using the same drill since I filmed this video and its still working just fine. But eventually it will fail I'm sure.

Grablifebythefish 1 that’s really good news that your drill is fine. I’m quite lucky I bought a second hand trolling motor from eBay that was described as not working. I used it the whole summer without any failures. But I wanted it to move a larger craft than the one in this video so I guess it really a Horses for courses situation.

Compared to running wires thru your boat, adding a battery, charging a battery, registering it, paying a registration fee, fabbing a trolling motor mount, I think this is a brilliant idea for someone who wants to achieve the same thing a motor would...
@SINTD_666
@SINTD_666 5 жыл бұрын
Xo xO I’m not denying that some people may have had some success using this method of propulsion. I consider myself fortunate that where I live and where I use my dinghy, I can do so without having to register it, or insure it. My motor mount cost less to buy than I could make it for. I consider myself very lucky. I will just ask you a question or two. If a drill is more than capable of replacing a trolling motor, why is the average drill around 2 kilograms but the average trolling motor is around 15+ kilograms, what’s the need for the difference in weight and size? It’s different horses for different courses. I have a 4m dinghy that I use on coastal and offshore waters carrying 2-5 adults. The person in this video is using a small single seat kayak, on inland waters. I would probably burn out a drill within a short period of time. I don’t think my statement is all that strange.

It's a good idea, but i think flawed in execution! There would be too much torque on the motor of the drill. I don't imagine the battery lasting too long, the motor would also over heat due to the torque produced and could well burn out! Shot bursts you'd go ok. For trolling lures or to cross a big body of water...idk, might leave you stranded!
@Grablifebythefish1

I kept stopping to make sure I didn't burn the motor up. The battery doesn't last long at all, probably about 10 mins total. I would never use it as my main for of transportation in the kayak just as in a boat you always should have a paddle for backup as wel!

Interesting product. I don’t agree with your unawareness too safety though. No life jacket while wearing all cotton in cold waters is a real easy way to find yourself drowning from hypothermia.

So is it considered a motor on the boat, does this mean to use it you will have to register your boat? Better yet, can you get away with using this without the damn government getting its cut?

I mean drill is not designed for that much load (big propeller like that) and it is not designed for continuous load more than 5-10 minutes. It's going to break one day. Regular trolling motor is cooled by water. Your drill is cooled by air and it's not gonna last. Its better to have one additional drill on the board :)

I have used it multiple times for a min or two at a time then gave it a break. I know it's not made for that. I don't use it for more than a min or two at a time then it gets a break.

Pretty neat but doesn't this turn your kayak into a motor boat thus requiring state registration in order to operate on public waters? I could just see coast guard or parks and wildlife handing out citations for this sort of thing.
@Grablifebythefish1
@Grablifebythefish1 6 жыл бұрын
Not around here. In the 4 years I have had my kayak I haven't seen either of those. You would just have to check your state and local regulations.

@@Grablifebythefish1 actually I just did and state of Texas requires titling and registration of any motorized boat. Whether or not you'd see any enforcement of it on a drill powered boat remains to be seen but they specifically call out trolling motors. I've never seen coast guard but I've been checked many times by fish and game and have heard of people being cited for not having proper safety equipment on board. One fella got a ticket for not having his whistle on board. If they can get a nickel out of you, one way or another, you know they'll go for a dollar. Thanks for posting and thanks for the reply.

@@Grablifebythefish1 I get that, but they are ergonomically designed for the exact job of moving you through the water. This is trying to use a product that's not designed for its use. It's noisy, cumbersome and will get damaged if dropped in to the water which looks inevitable to me.

Going on 3 years and no drops in the water but I'm sure it would eventually happen. I don't use it as much any more, don't have this kayak and have a pedal one now.

$ 50 dollars !!!!! Way to expensive for what it is. I DIY made the same thing with a $6 aliexpress propeller and $3 aluminum shaft and the whole thing cost me $11 bucks.
