How to drill through tough porcelain tiles brought to you by www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/for...
Diamond coated hole saws are often the only thing that is tough enough to go through tough porcelain tiles, without spending hundreds on professional tile drilling kits.

With diamond core bits on very accurate r hole requirements, I first drill a hole in a thin metal plate with a steel bit and ensure the core bit fits nicely through it. Then tape the guide hole plate to the tile with the hole on the exact position and core drill through the guide hole into the tile with plenty of water. It's a little more time consuming though. I've also used thisholed metal plate method on enameled surfaces too. Eg hole for a thermometer position on a curved weber barbeque lid

Cheers for the video . Drilled a 25mm hole to take a shower arm. was slightly off centre by a couple mm, but I just started on the angle like you show, and manage to enlarge the hole giving me greater tolerance to locate the shower arm. Worked a treat as the shower arm cap covers the hole anyhow !!! Fitting this recessed shower with concealed mixer valves , means I'm almost ready to jump in the bugger and have a well deserved soak ! Long live DIY !

Good video...I do the same but I have one little trick I added that you may want to try I make a ring around the area that I am going to drill with plumbers putty and then put water in it and drill away.....keeps the bit cool. I only use this on glazed ceramic or porcelain tile not natural stone as the plumbers putty might stain it.

First of all great video. Just a personal tip, you can also drill through a softer tile first and then use that tile as a guide to keep the drill from wobbling as you start drilling, especially good for larger holes and more precision.

If you get an external flushing cone for an old style toilet and after you have started your hole press it against the tile and spray water in the water stays inside and washes the dust out of the hole as you go.

Can you recommend a brand please. I've been struggling with some very hard porcelain tiles. Even the fairly expensive Mexco bits only last 2 or 3 holes. Thanks for your time.

I tried a JCB brand one a few weeks back on some granite and it worked really well. I managed about 10 holes in the granite and might have even been able to do a couple more. Unfortunately these diamond coated bits are consumable items, but some are better than others. I once bought a silverline one and it would not even go through ceramic. I got the JCB one from Toolstation, it was not cheap but worked well. Thanks for the comment

Thanks for this tutorial. I'll be needing to do this soon, so wish me luck. I can well imagine that when you first try to get it started the drill bit will slip everywhere, which I'm assuming is the purpose of the masking tape. Is a slow or fast speed better for cutting porcelain tiles with a diamond hole saw like this?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman Жыл бұрын
Good luck 😉 A fast speed normally works well, with plenty of water to jeep the bit cool 👍

It takes a bit of practice holding the drill. If you find it difficult, you can cut a hole in a piece of wood, then fix that to the tile using some strong double-sided tape, this will act as a guide for starting the hole 👍
@MrRoca65
@MrRoca65 7 жыл бұрын
So, if the tile is already installed, you just change bit concrete bit and continue drilling for a larger hole to accommodate a concrete screw. Am I right?
@ultimatehandyman

Yes, but it's difficult using the diamond coated hole saws without a device to hold the drill bit in position.

Is there some reason why you added the water to the swarf? Why not vacuum away the swarf and then pour water continuously onto the bit?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 жыл бұрын
+RIPSAW1986 This was only a soft ceramic tile. If you are cutting a harder tile it's best to have a continuous flow of water to cool the bit down.

How do you clear out the drill bit for the next hole? I drilled the hole and now the tile is in the drill bit and I can't get it out to start the next hole
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 3 жыл бұрын
I think the bit that is gripped by the chuck was hollow on mine, so you could push something thin and round down to eject the piece. Failing that I'd try to break the tile using a hammer and cold chisel etc. Thanks for the comment

I try to answer all comments, but sometimes the KZbin comment system plays up and I do not always see them. It sounds like your drill has a hex chuck? Drill bits like this require a standard 3 jaw chuck, perhaps you could get something similar to this- fave.co/2Jw4LlX Thanks for the comment
