The threaded arbor without the tang is designed to be used with a milling machine or lathe headstock with threaded draw bar. The shorter arbor without the tang or drawbar also usually fits better in a lathe tailstock. The tang version is for a drill press to accomdate the drift (knock out wedge) many years ago most bigger drill bits had a morse taper shanks and were designed to be mounted directly to the drill press spindle without a chuck and were impossible to slip like a straight drill shank can somtimes slip in a chuck. BTW for those who think these tapers are "new" technology the Morse taper was invented by Shephen Morse back in the 1864. The Jacobs style chuck is "Newer" techology having been developed in 1902. The Albrecth keyless chuck design came from Germany in 1932.

I had an old Sunex SF-12 drill press given to me many years ago. Sat out in my barn for about 10 years, because the arbor/chuck was missing. Got it out last month and got it working again. Ordered a chuck/arbor from Home Depot. Hope it fits. This was very interesting information, as was robc8468 post! I'm just going to be using it in my home shop. Got my fingers crossed.

I hope it fits too. You're in good company. Those old Sunex drill presses are built like tanks.

Tang is for the drill press, the other one is made for a lathe or milling machine.

I don’t understand why you didn’t just pop the Keyless Chuck off of the incorrect Arbor and install it on the Correct Morse Taper Arbor that you already had with a Tang on it???

Does that chuck hold bits as well as a keyed chuck when drilling steel?
@pmtips4482 Жыл бұрын
Yes it does. It still depends on how much down pressure you apply. Thanks for watching!

But the taper is obviously more extreme than the one that comes with the drill press. This means that the snug is only at the very end of the quill and not throughout the chamber.
@pmtips44823 жыл бұрын
Right, I agree. The chuck has not fallen out on me. The most aggressive drilling I've done is with a 5/8 inch drill bit on 1/2 inch mild steel, no problems there. Thanks for watching!

@@pmtips4482 I replaced my arbor to one that has the tang on it and tapers correctly. It was $11 on Amazon. Fits perfectly. amzn.to/3bMaAGN
@Iatolaazzahola Жыл бұрын
No sir, that is not what that means. The angle of the taper is the same on both arbors, meaning that the amount of contact surface area is the same within the same distance of the ID of the spindle. What this does mean is that the OD at the end near the chuck is larger than the OD of the keyed chuck arbor. If the OD of the arbors were the same as the keyed arbor the keyless chuck would slide in the same distance as the original keyed chuck arbor, and most likely could be driven out with the arbor wedge. I do like what pmtips did to make it work, it is very simple and effective. When using the keyless chuck in the tailstock of a mini lathe without his extension, the bump out inside the tailstock would not "bump" the chuck out of the quill creating another mess. Good show pmtips!!

whts your recommendation on buying a stock replacement???????
@pmtips44823 жыл бұрын
I would check with WEN on that. They seem to have pretty good CS. My drill was shipped in two boxes and one box got a little lost. I called them while in the parking lot of Home Depot, and a human being actually answered the phone. He was very helpful and the second box arrived the next day. OTOH, any Jacobs chuck with the proper MT will work (Amazon). Thanks for watching!

I wish I never bought this chuck. It really doesn't have enough holding power for round bits and is difficult to align three sided bits. The original chuck that came with my 4214 is back in the drill press and works very well.
@larryleek2030 Жыл бұрын
I had to do the very same thing on mine, and it works fine, but a tang would have been better. Maybe they don't use tangs and drift keys in China ??!!
