Drill Press Belt Adjustment

I was really starting to think the motor had a clutch slipping somewhere. Nope, I’m just a dummy! Really happy I figured this out. I didn’t even know the speed was adjustable!

Thank you SOOO MUCH - I had the exact same issue with a 2” drill bit & was at my wits end! My drill press did not have that lever so I loosened the set screws for the motor & tapped the motor shafts on each side which tightened the belts and then tightened the setscrews. I then tried my 2” bit which I cut into PVC board & it drilled straight thru!! I was going to buy new belts - even a new drill press - your video saved me!!

My old Chicago Power Tools drill is made by the same company. Identical design. The hole underneath has a light bulb in mine.

That middle pulley on mine dont move.. its locked solid in there.. the motor side tighter than a banjo but the business end is loose as . Well you know.. that stuff we used to get back in our day.. im fittn to take a 10 pounder to that thing..

Actually the bigger the cutter diameter the slower the rpm should be. Think of it this way, compare the tangent velocity of the outside edge of let’s say a 1/4 inch cutter to the tangent velocity of a three inch diameter cutter for the same rpm and you’ll see that the teeth in the 3” cutter are really moving compared to a 1/4” dia cutter. When the cutting edges velocity is to fast for the cutting edge to be able to “bite” in to “scoop” away material, you’re then just heating up and dulling the cutting edges quickly, damaging the cutter.

I thought I explained it, I’m sorry. You just loosen the motor to slide it in and loosen the belts. Then you can just slip the belts up or down on their pulleys to change the speed ratio, and then tighten the motor back up to tighten the belts.

@@TomBrueggen Tom, I recently acquired the same press... Belts are so worn, the belt number is worn to the point, I can't read the belt #... Can you supply the numbers??? I tried stopping the video in the 1 position of the number, BUT, couldn't make out the numers...

@@robertbobphillips Take the old belts to a tool supplier. They should be able to tell you which belt is needed. Or you can go online, Ebay or Amazon have many place you can order replacements, if you know the model number and manufacture date.
