That's a beautiful machine. I'm disappointed that you didn't remove the Walker Turner tag on the front of the the cast body. IMO, the tag is part of the coolness factor of using old machinery.

saw your vid and fell in love with this model. I love drill presses and exclusively prefer table mounted versions as they are smaller, less weight and easy to move around. But this floor model is an exception, I love its big round base, very unique, usually the bases are all rectangular. I found one locally for $350, thought about it, it was ok but I preferred to get one that came with some rare accessories, that way I will get those for free and pay only for the dress press as a whole as many dont know about the many accessories these machines came with. I got lucky last week and found one in excellent condition, no rust anywhere. no drill marks on table and it came with the always missing aluminum belt guard, screw table riser and the low speed pulley attachment! I went to the estate sale and got it for $162. I dont like the way the aluminum belt cover looks on the machine and it will be sold to recover all the cost of the machine. I was able to dismantle it all and load it in my 2014 mini cooper S hardtop! It sits in the basement now, I go in everyday to look at it and move the handle and leave with a smile all the time. This is more of a show piece than anything for me, a collector piece. I really like the WT drill press compare to atlas or delta. Love the round base and the cast front pulley cover with the quill cover is just a delight to watch, that is the reason why I got the machine.

Hey neighbor Dave, I bought a South Bend 14 " drill press, and I'm in the process of getting it back to operating again. It was once a floor model, but due to buying it at a scrap yard, it's now a bench model. It needs a couple parts, but will function just as well without. I'll probably just make some temporary parts so I can use them.

Hey man, this is maybe the 5th time I've watched this restoration all of the way through. I have pretty much the identical Walker Turner and I love it. I picked it up from a local business for $100 but the original motor was replaced with a 3/4 hp Dayton. Seriously works great but I do want it to look nice so I think a good cleaning and paint job is in order. Thanks for making this video to make the process easier on my brain ;-). I got a 1937 Delta drill press with the instruction booklet at a yard sale and I love it. It does not have some features that I wish that it did, but it is still adequate for what I need. It needed a lot of cleaning, lubrication and adjustments, but it works perfectly now. I also had to sand or steel wool a lot of the unprotected metal parts that were badly rusted. I found some videos on how to make it run both directions, which comes in handy for putting a wire wheel on there or some other accessories. I also wanted to try my hand at tapping metal. Also wanted to use it as a router as shown in the owners manual. I have also used it as a wood lathe. Maybe play around using it as a big screwdriver or nut remover, on handheld items of course. 😀 Maybe use it as a paint or peanut butter stirrer. I found a good video for putting a third pulley wheel on it to reduce the speed a lot. Drill presses are my favorite tool. I had to keep a big plastic bag over it out on the balcony of our apartment, but the manager told me I had to remove it. I can't use it when it's in storage. 😭 I still want to put a reversing switch on my bench grinder like my dad did many years ago. 😃

Fantastic job, I have the bench top version and just started my overhaul. How did you get the bearing holders unseated from the bell housing on the head? I can barely turn mine with huge channel locks. Anyway, great job and super video!!!

Im restoreing and old clarke drill press that was my dads. Bad rust issue. The depth stop is a waste, cant get the chunk off but did manage to free it up so i can put in a bit. Any tips on how to make the work plate and shaft shine and where to find a few parts?

Hey Virginia, first thing that comes to mind is a loose belt. If you would like to discuss this in depth, shoot me an email to [e-mail] and include a video and I’ll try and diagnose the issue. :). If the belt or the motor keeps spinning but the spindle doesn’t, loosen the little set screws for the fat pins the motor mount is mounted to, pull your motor mount back to take out the slack in the belt, and re tighten the set screws. Your belt might need to be replaced too.

Bought an old Fobco drill press here in the UK, similar condition to yours. When cleaning the surface rust off of bare steel sections (the main column for example) what do you use to prevent surface rust returning?

Wish I had thought of that when I started disassembly... But, the original motor was PH3 powered and used in an industrial golf application. Since it for my garage shop and regular 110 volt current, I purchased a completely rebuilt, restored KC Ball Bearing motor, 1725 RPM’s, 1/2 HP... I just discovered the 4 wires and not sure how the connections go!

Great Video David, thanks for sharing. Can't wait to start on my Walker Turner 1-147 that I just got or free from a widow lady in the neighborhood, together with an old (very heavy) table saw. Noticed you didn't touch your sandblasting equipment, which is an encouraging, because I thought I needed it, but I don't own it. Wire cup! I also getting also good results with 3M Paint and Rust Stripper. eRust is my main issue, we live on an island with high temp/ ocean spray in the the air. How much time did you spend?

Joost Lomans this took maybe a month working on it here and there. Good luck with keeping her rust free once you’re done. Don’t be tempted to clear coat bare metal parts, it’s far better to keep bare metal well oiled!! Good luck!

Thanks! Please use eye protection consistently when operating any machinery. I'd like to see how to disassemble the quill so I can service or replace the bearings. It's the one aspect of my series 900 that I have not addressed. While my unit had some rust, I dealt with it without repainting since I wanted to restore, not rebuild. Same with the chuck. I used all the original parts which fortunately were all quite serviceable. I did not replace the two conductor power cord and plug for the same reason, but I did ground the entire unit for electrical safety reasons. By the way, I picked up my drill press on the side of the road where some fool just dumped it. It weighs 130 pounds fully assembled.

Hi Dave, great video and restoration. Your Press looks great. Thanks to you I learned how to take mine apart. If you or anyone else wouldn't mind helping me out, I have some questions regarding my 1940 WT Drill Press. I am trying to figure out if it is worth restoring or if it is pretty much beyond repair. It has a fair amount of run out/wobble when I use it. The raise/lower sprocket has a decent amount of wear/damage and the bearing/spacer at the very top of the shaft seems to have a lot of play. I have questions about some other things as well. I have never restored or worked on a drill press so I am not really sure what to think. I would happily send pictures and details to anyone who may help me out.

Ten months later, no answer. So, here goes. First thing is obviously to figure out what’s causing that runout. I’d buy a cheapo dial indicator and see how much runout we’re talking about. Next, buy and install new bearings for the quill assembly. Go back to the dial indicator and see if there’s any improvement. If no improvement, time to question the quill. A bent quill is very unlikely. But it the previous owner ever dropped it… Lastly, consider the chuck. A cheap Chinese chuck is probably better than an 80 year old chuck. Best of luck with your restoration.

I have a similar press... I am not very mechanical... My press is not turning the shaft. The pulleys turn but it's not grabbing the shaft. I see a couple of allen set screws on the pulley. Is that what needs to be worked at?

Mark W check google to see where a local bearing distributor may be. Granger is a national source but there are places that sell nothing but bearings in your closest big city or industrial center. Good luck mark!

Luis Mejia hey Luis, this chuck was a gift from my cousin who is a machinist. They can be readily obtained online either used on eBay, or new just about anywhere machine parts are sold. Apparently the Chinese clones are good too but don’t take my word for it. Did you get a new quill for your machine?

I took the quadrill apart and I've notice that I can use this one as a single chuck if I want to.. just have to put all the quadrill parts away and get the depth collar that goes around the quill

Hi Dave! I am attempting the restoration of a later model 15” Walker Turner floor model Drill Press... I am at the stage where I am trying to sort out how to wire the motor’s capacitor to my Drill press push button “on/off” switch That mounts into the middle of the headstock’s forehead! Surprisingly, there are 4 wires... Black, white green and red! Not sure what goes where and why... That’s a problem! Web searches have not been helpful... Ideas?

Fred, I’m really sorry, the only way I’m able to get my electrical stuff back together is by taking pictures. It’s totLly out of my wheelhouse. There are some antique motor collectors groups on Facebook that could be helpful

Great video and nice work! I have the table-top version of this same drill press. Mine is from 1933, and I use it daily. I also do the occasional re-built/restoration project like this. There is a lifesaving product you should be aware of. Kano Laboratories in Nashville makes a penetrating oil that is lightyears better for this kind of thing than WD-40. It is called "Kroil" and to read their marketing hype, you'd be tempted to think it's a load of bull, but I've been using it for 20+ years now on everything from super-fine medical and clock works to rusted drill press columns, and it's astounding what it will un-freeze. Remember to let it sit for a while, sometimes overnight. It needs time to fully penetrate. Also, I see you applying 3-in-1 oil to fastener threads so that they will be easier to disassemble in the future and less likely to rust. A better product for this purpose is Bostik Never-Seez. It will allow you to easily disassemble the parts even after decades of moisture exposure and temperature cycling. Kroil is available here: www.kanolabs.com and Never-Seez is available at most hardware and auto parts stores. I hope this makes your next project easier.

When working with heavy iron parts.. wear some appropriate footwear. Drop any of the major parts on those sandals and you can make a first aid video.
