I’ll be honest, it makes complete sense that the drill would be faster because there is not impact mechanism to slow down the rotation, but the impact would probably last longer with a comparable battery (i have not tested that) since the motor wont be drawing as much power (again not tested)

Right? Isn’t the point to be as efficient in the field as possible? If it is then what you are saying is utter nonsense.

The high torque impact wrench , has a hammering effect, and because of that will be slower. But, the impact prevents breaking the fasteners on or off, because when it gets stuck, the hammer effect will push it in. So always use an impact on old bolts nuts and fasteners that are seized or rusted because their will be less chance of breaking the bolt. Same with drilling into concrete, you need a hammer drill because a regular drill will just mess up the drilled hole and leave a mess. It depends on the application

Dude we did it like that in the 90’s and all had RSI until cordless impact wrenches came out, just because it’s faster to do 1 doesn’t mean it’s better when you have to do 20. I don’t disagree that the drill will put one away faster but the stresses on the drill and the user are unsustainable for the working life of the user if you do it day after day. It literally took years for my wrists to recover from the 1999 Bosch 18v and 100mm batten screws.

11 seconds for the 1/2" impact and with minimal effort, 9 seconds for the drill with what appeared to be a fair bit of effort. I think I'd use the 3/8" impact personally due to the lighter weight and ease of use, or maybe the normal 1/2" impact. If you're using it a lot you will notice the extra weight of the big impact and the extra torsion of the drill.

A screw is a simple machine in and of itself. It translates torque to forward motion. How much torque is required depends on the thickness of the screw and how deep it should go. Realistically, it is used to keep 2 objects together, and in the case of a self tapping screw only the piece on the side of the head needs to be pre drilled. The only reason I'd use an impact driver is to release a rusty nut or bolt.

A hammer drill is a completely different tool that has hammer action parallel to the drill axis. An impact driver or impact wrench has a hammering action that helps rotate the bit, as if you were holding the fastener with a wrench and tapping the other end of the wrench with a hammer to fasten or loosen the bolt. They are built for a completely different purpose.

You are undermining the whole purpose of a power tool. The role is the power tool is to make the work easier for you. It’s not to shave 2 seconds off a particular task. You’re gripping the drill so tight and putting lots of effort into keeping yourself from getting injured from the kickback. Contrast that with the impact driver. Someone with half your strength and knowledge could still be very successful in driving the lag. Again, I’m urging you to honestly evaluate how much effort the human is putting into the final solution for both methods. The impact is clearly the better tool for this.

I have to agree, the impact is not for screwing in screws, I know this because in my language a drill is called a skruvdragare. Which means screwdriver and an impact is called Mutterdragare or mutterknackare, which means nut driver and nut knocker (literal translation). That would imply that it’s made for tightening and lossening nuts and bolts, like the bolts on a car wheel

So in the end, the drill is OK to use, and will win the "speed" debate. But for overall efficiency, the impact is your best bet. I'm just a DIYer, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers!

Realistically I use an impact that will straight motor drive a 3" #8 until it's driving the head in, and beyond that an impact. I also preferentially use an air impact if I am doing a lot of fasteners because mine is quieter than a stupid battery impact :)

Does pushing down make the drill spin faster or the wood softer? Also helps if you little girls could learn how to listen before making stupid excuses

In my professional the reason I prefer impacts is because they can be one handed much like you did this demo. I’m in hard to reach places and can’t wrangle a drill. While it’s way faster and drills are useful, my whole crew has to use impacts for most of what we do. Shoot, half the time I’ve got a half inch knuckle adapter on too.

In my opinion, for operating the tool in one hand or harder to reach places then I would go with an impact, while the drill may be faster. Also I found that if I drill a hole and then screw into it, the impact has more torque to tightly bind into the next board, whereas the drill starts to spin the screw and ultimately it is just spinning in place. The impact however can be more likely to strip a screw, but the drill is more likely to crack a screw off in the wood while it’s spinning. At one point though, drills were all that existed or were cheaper than buying both an impact and drill. There is however a very important role for a type of drill to screw in lags. A 90 degree drill can get into spots where a drill and impact cannot, and that is where I would use a drill (90 degree drill) over an impact

When I’m running a lot of lags or sds screws the drill is going to overheat and stop. The impact will run hundreds of them with a 2’ extension so I don’t have to bend over

The mechanical workings of the imapact wrench are going to make it slower. Its operating by applying a series of impacts. Wheras the drill is sending a smooth constant velocity. But you want a real test go and try removing rusty bolts with bolt of those. Or just bolts that have 75 to 100 ft-lbs on them then see which one wins. Each tool has its purpose and result. Doesnt make either a bad tool. Just makes one perform better in differing scenarios.

Ever wish you knew as much as you pretend to know? It would be such a nice change of pace. Here's problem number 1) it's called a drill driver. That means you should use it for driving. Problem 2) it's very obvious you have never done anything like this and you are clueless as to how it is truly done. Sad really. Two words for you...pilot hole. Problem 3) I have already proven you wrong with this garbage about the drill can't do this 10 times. If you were smart, big if, you would understand that a fastener is just another type of twist bit. They're even sort of shaped the same. Problem 4) only a fool would believe that a tool designed for short bursts of power, relying on metal hitting metal, would be the way to go.

The real question no one is asking is, legitimately, how much time are you saving by using one over the other? A couple seconds shaved off for each lag only makes a difference over dozens of lags. And that's only if you are working at peak efficiency the rest of the time so as not to lose those few seconds you saved earlier.

Fast isn't always the point. You can damage the tool by using it the wrong way or for the wrong purpose for an extended perios of time. That's why there are different sized chucks for these types of tool. You CAN use the drill, you SHOULD use the HT impact wrench
@ToolswithSoAlz

Actually, because I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, you would use a drill to do this every time. The reason for that is that you would drill a pilot hole. That means you don't need a high torque impact wrench for the job. Also, if you managed to listen, you would have heard me say that if I were to do it as tested I would use the impact wrench. Listening is both a verb and an activity.
