Have you ever wondered how a well is drilled? Us too! This week we share the process as we get a well drilled on our own property. Things got a little interesting when the drilling rig's engine broke down, but our contractor did an excellent job to handle the issue and make it just a 2-day task. Follow along to see how it went, and learn a thing or two about how water wells are drilled!

Thanks for making this video. You did a nice job. Already watched a number of similar videos and none of them, including yours, talks about some basic things (which a novice like me presumes), like, the drill bit goes down to the bedrock, so they have to bring that back to the surface, then they drill a wider hole for the casing?, then the pvc casing (or some other material) goes down the hole, but if it's pvc casing, what is used to keep the pvc pipes connected?

I apologize if it was explained earlier, but how did you know the property had water available to even drill when making the purchase/hiring the drill crew team? Was there a theoretical chance that a producing well would not be found? Other homesteading channels have mentioned large premiums are paid for land with a pre-drawn well, indicating not all land has pumpable water. Also, 250' sounds really deep, the property I've recently purchased has a 30' deep sand point well, that was probably pounded by hand from a single person 40 years ago.
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct, having water available on a piece of property is not always guaranteed. There is no sure way to know you have it without drilling first. We probably could have gotten away with a well just under the water level, 100' deep. However, that does not get us any borehole storage or safety against drought dropping the ground water level. Wells in our area are typically up to 400' deep, some going up to 800' and yielding .5 gal/min. I think being on top of a rocky hill actually helped our case for finding water. -Alex

Many use divining tricks/well witching. We dont trust in the diving method for drilling water. It is a waste of money and a ruse. We have never ever found a diviner to be accurate, ever. There are scientific methods that you can use like resistivity, seismic or deep radar.

You missed an important step, did anyone witch the area to see where to drill to find water? Or did you just guess and pick a convenient spot yourself? I have never seen where the side of the upper well casing was penetrated, a pitless adapter, to access the interior of the well. Why was that done? Here in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California the wells all exit from the top of the casing. Then they make a 180 and go down under the frost line, then to the tanks. That was a way cheap drilling job you got, most cost a lot more. My well is 200 feet deep, 100 feet to water, pump is at 180 feet, and I get 40 GPM. Good video and explanation on how the compressed air assists the drilling.
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The pitless adapter is to keep water below frost line all the time. Doesn't your water freeze if it's coming out the top of the casing then back down? Regarding the drilling spot, I talked to the driller about this - his best advice is to just pick a convenient spot that's out of the way of construction. He has worked with "water sniffers" who claim to be able to locate it and in his 20 years of drilling he said it's total bs.. but to each their own

We drill wells in Pittsburgh Pa, that is really cheap. Did they install a liner or is it open hole in the rock? If I drilled that well id be between 6k-8k depending on if it’s lined. Our finished residential systems with drilling range from 10k-20k. How far does it pump and what size house does it supply?
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres 2 жыл бұрын
I also thought it was a very good price, the other 2 quotes I had were around 6k. Beyond the casing it is just a hole in the bedrock. I will say this company quoted me on a finished system and everything else seemed quite high - trenching, pump price, installation labor, etc. so I cut all that out and just had them drill the hole. I am procuring the rest of the stuff separately and will install myself. The well is around 120' from the house. Right now we are building a small 2bd/1ba garage house which may be added onto for a total of up to 5bd (limited by septic).

@@MasonDixonAcres fusing hdpe together? Or rolled poly pipe? We install pumps on 1” sch80 threaded pvc in 20 ft joints, or rolls of poly for hard to reach spaces, since it doesn’t have a liner in the hole and it’s open rock you need to make sure your connections are solid so you don’t lose anything down the hole, also if it caved in some day that pipe may not pull back out of the well. You can’t set the pump on the bottom of the hole either since the motors are water cooled, you’ll need to be 10 to 15 feet off the bottom at least.
@jonathanmeinert
@jonathanmeinert 2 жыл бұрын
@@MasonDixonAcres depending on the pumping level you will probably need a 1hp, 10gpm pump. 1hp only runs efficiently on 12/2 wire up to 400 feet total wire run. If you set the pump at 220 to 230 ft plus the ditch length and the wire run to the panel, I would run 10/2 uf wire in the ditch and from the panel to the pressure tank and down the hole you can get away with running 12/2 but you may just want 10 the whole way to carry voltage more efficiently. Two wire motors don’t need a control box, if you set a three wire pump with a control box you’ll need 10/3 with ground the whole way. Don’t listen to the electricians when they say the 10 wire needs a double 30 amp breaker. Locked rotor amps on a 1hp requires a double 20 breaker so if it goes bad it actually trips it at the panel.

In Madison County, AR in 2017, I paid $12,375 for a 575ft well with pump. Still brings up brackish/red water after 5 years and I have to filter it 5 times outside (5 micron, 5 micron, 1 micron, softener, carbon canister, .5 micron filter...just to shower/laundry), then .2 micron filters inside if I want to drink it. Sucks! I change the first 5 micron filter every 2 weeks (because it's red clay dirty filled) and the others (5 micron secondary, 1 micron, .5 micron) every month. They are baleen and washable with a jet setting on the garden hose nozzle, let them dry and use them 7/8 times before they don't clean so well and through them out. AND...I have to put 3/4 quart of 35% hydrogen peroxide EVERY Saturday because the water is contaminated EVERY week and grows mold/algae even though I've sanitized it 10 times with bleach kits for wells.

Quote from 4 different drillers came in between $25-30k, including pump trench, and all associated filtering inside the house. That quote is for the first 100ft. Neighbours well came in at 165 ft. My eyes popped out of my head when I saw your price. Hopefully they will hit water at 200ft. We’re on sand. Light clay layers occasionally.

Residential well? I’m a driller not far from you. I’m out of Decatur. We haven’t done a whole lot in Denton, have drilled a couple, drill a lot in ponder/krum/Sanger. Typically 400-500 deep in those areas. 100 a ft seems steep. We have had regular price increases due to inflation, it’s been crazy. But I believe we are around the 40 dollar a ft range at the moment, that is also turn key, pump, tank,etc

$3700 is really cheap. I wonder how much science goes on deciding where to drill. It seems you chosse the drilling position based on what was a most convenient location that met code, but how about if there was no water underground on that side of the property?
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres Жыл бұрын
I tried to research it, there is no method whatsoever. Some people claim to be able to sense the crossing of underground streams with two metal rods. The well drillers I talked to said it's BS. So yes, pick wherever is convenient and cross your fingers.
@didyuknow
@didyuknow Жыл бұрын
@@MasonDixonAcres There are sophisticated equipment that send shockwaves to the ground and using scattered sensors can detect the soil density to a certain depth. Probably that would increase the digging cost a lot, but making one hole closer to a water stream vs 10 far away may make it cheaper. another option would be looking at the location of other working good water wells on a map to finc a trend.

mechanical engineering can't help with CAM bus errors. Amazing that a Diesel engine would even be designed to depend on a CAM bus. That's an overkill that fails more often than the whole thing it is designed to protect. There are expensive european cars with several cam buses. They are the main reason those cars have so many reliability problems.

Haha I couldn't tell ya, probably a $30k engine from Cummins and $20k labor. I agree that it was a fantastic price for drilling, even compared to others I got quotes from. Their quote for a complete setup was like $11k though so that's probably where they make up for their cost. Glad they were willing to separate out the drilling, I think I can run the line myself. The driller also said they have work 100% of the time, probably because of their prices.
