Thanks for the video. I had plenty of antler from friends but put it aside because I always messed up the drilling. After watching the video I went in the shop and made two pens. I also watched your CA video and the finish came out excellant. Keep up the good work, you're helping me become a better turner. I subscribed.

You might not be aorund but does drilling old antler tips like this smell? I have a crafting area in my apartment but don’t want to drill antler tips in case it smells

I do pretty much the same sanding but I drill the blank using my four jawl chuck in my lathe to bore the hole out.

Just curious to know why you don't just boil the Angela in hot water then. Just straighten the antler when it is soft ?

You must not know much about bones do you? Antlers aren't like rawhide they don't just bend.

@@erindiskin5496 lmao! You the one that don't know 😂😂😂 For one an antler isn't bone. At all. If you'd paid attention to what he was saying "it's a hair, a big hair" same make up as fingernails as well. There's more than one vid on KZbin demonstrating the use of boiling in water to straighten.

Once you cut off the two ends, just mount the piece between centres and turn round. Set your centres so you can see that you have enough material to drill a good hole. If you set it so there will be a little raw antler showing from the low side, then that will give character on the final pen turning....After turning it round, put it in the pin / spigot jaws and drill on the lathe.

why not just use a vice and a cordless drill.
@0351nick-ch8ee2 жыл бұрын
Or you could just boil it in water for 20 minutes and then put it in a vise to straighten it as you want.
