Today I will be attempting to drill my own well, with my homemade drill rig! This project was massive, and definitely took some time to figure it out, so sorry for the delay in the upload! Hoping I can get back to (closer to) weekly uploads in the coming projects!
Also thank you SO much for 45,000 subscribers!! I'm really grateful for each and every one of you!

Not sure if this is legal. But I would have just used water pressure. A Water tube inside a larger tube and the outside tube would have flushed all the dirt out. Plumbers do this to basically dig a hole under a drive way slab to run a water line. I mean since you had no rock to deal with.

@@MakingUsThink municipal pressure hydro-excavation is a valid method of digging... However, it requires you to be somewhere with municipal water and also be allowed to dig your own well, rich enough to not care for the water cost of an absurd amount of water you are not used as you are not recirculating while also wanting the hassle of managing your own well instead of just using municipal water. So a valid option but rarely the better option.

Great video, thank you. I don't know if the ship has sailed or not at this point but for your house foundation, because of the soils you have, I would strongly suggest you hire a geotechnical engineer to do a soil boring below your house location. This typically costs around $2500 U.S. You can use that information to design a piling-supported foundation. (A bunch of telephone poles pounded into the ground.) If you do a slab on grade house, with all of the water in the soil, you're going to get heave in the winter and your slab will get big cracks. All of the plants you took out were constantly sucking moisture out of the ground and it was still very wet so now the water will be even more prominent.

I have been a well-driller from Germany for 30 years, here it is also an apprenticeship with a master craftsman, the art is not drilling a hole in the ground but the right soil approach and the right construction of the well, then it will last a hundred years and more. The principle of flush drilling is correct, but it can be done without causing any damage to the near ground and without looking like a pig. :D And another tip for everyone, when you pump a freshly drilled well for the first time, you throttle down the amount of Water with a valve and as soon as it becomes clearer, you can increase the amount further. If you pump a full pipe straight away, you close off the filter pipe and the well intake area and increase the inlet resistance, thereby causing a significantly higher drawdown. By the way, the filter sand or filter gravel must be placed around the filter while there is still water in the borehole and before the water is pumped out, otherwise the filter area will have been closed long ago and the filter gravel will only be poured into the annular space above the water level. And be careful, when the filter gravel sinks, it can happen that it displaces the lighter well pipe and the well rises up and comes out of the borehole again. :D

About micro plastics… We have a family camp/cabin that needs a well drilled and I enjoyed watching your journey. In many of other videos, professional drillers stuff a heavy wad of micro fiber cloth that is attached to a rope down the casement, tightly blocking the pipe. This keeps the plastic shavings from falling down into the hole. The micro fiber is really good at snagging the plastic and when they pull it out, it’s like a squeegee and removes all the plastic shavings.

We bought a house and property in Oregon 3 years ago. The old well had caved in, or sabotaged. I decided to figure out how to drill it myself, once I realized that it was going to cost almost 30k to have a driller do it for me. First, I bought an air drill and planned on going down the original bore hole. We are about 20 miles from Crater Lake, so all the layers from 18’ and down are just different layers of lava rock. The air drill didn’t work out, so we bought a little mud rotary. That got us to 32’, until we reached a layer that was drinking our drilling fluid. Our trash pump moves about 100 gallons per minute, and that layer was taking it faster then the pump could move it. Last year we bought a 22W cable tool and a support rig from a driller who was retiring. It took 7 months to drill down to 197’ on weekends. Probably the most difficult task I’ve ever done, but we have a well now, and our property is large enough to justify another couple of wells. I have a tower shock assembly in the mail now, and once I get that on I’m going to stand it up for well #2. I can definitely appreciate people like this who set their mind to tackling chores like this. Congratulations on being a badass.

The way you went about it with your 'homebuilt' rig and the research you have done to successfully accomplish drilling your own well is impressive to say the least!

Ran tools on a 1945 Cable Tool, 3 spool rig…. Flagstaff AZ in 1997…That’s one roughneck job that pounds the ground. Picking up 10 foot wrenches that weigh a few hundred pounds and slinging ropes on a spinning capstan to make and break connections constantly was an eye opener on how things were done. Rotary tables were a lot easier. Now I make oilwell tooling for motors and directional drilling. National Oilwell is one of the companies.

@@jakester455 Boulders or bedrock can be cored with a DIY inexpensive section of steel pipe with carbide chunks brazed to the open bottom cut end. Water lubricates and cools the slow grinding until the pipe grinds it's way down and fills with a core of rock. Everything is flushed with water and then some steel shot is drooped down the middle of the boring stem. The steel shot drops to the bottom and, with the rotation started, the shot jams between the carbide tipped boring pipe and the rock core. The core snaps and everything is raised and then cleaned out. Rinse and repeat. Larger operations use a three carbide cutting wheel head to just grind down through the rock.

Even better, use a clear container (like a PET bottle) with a sheet of white paper behind it, and shine a red laser (use something like a laser pointer) through the water. If you can look at 90 degrees to the laser beam through the water and see the red laser, it's still muddy. Ideally you'd measure at 11 degrees off the beam too, but that's impossible to do safely by eye.

If we're commenting about that, I just think it's awesome that we have a young woman with clean skin everywhere we can see. It's becoming incredibly rare. Seems like every young woman today wants to go cover their bodies with ugly looking graffiti/tattoos as quickly as possible. Maybe a couple decades ago it had some appeal just in the fact that it was unique and made a girl stand out in the crowd, but that is definitely NOT the case now. I'm not entirely against ink on women, but only if its very sparse, feminine looking, and well done. Which is almost as rare as having clean skin. Aside from that, go to another channel/website if you're itching to see a girl take her clothes off, there's only about 100million of them out there... this channel ain't it.

A suggestion for future projects of any kind. Use all thread to help level. I did this with a concrete form. I had 2x4s at all the corners to help make a box using 1/2" plywood. I drilled trough the 2x4s then installed all thread with nuts and washers above and below the 2x4s. This allowed me to fine tune my levelness. The bottom nut sets the height, the top nut secures the setting. You can set up you all thread at the near end of the outriggers to perform the same effect. The bonus is reuseable materials. I dig your drilling rig. The best I have seen yet for a DIY project. Your rig could help me get through my limestone.

The cuttings will fall back in the hole keep the pump circulating until there are no cuttings. Also velocity is important, it looks like your pipe is small compared to your diameter of your bit. If your velocity is low on the outside of the pipe which has the cuttings, the cuttings can fall back through the circulated water and accumulate in the hole and cause (by the way I'm a petroleum engineer:) I was writing all this at the beginning, I see you guys figured it out good job! Looks like you have well sorted sand which should have really high permeability (lots of water flow.)

Meg, you inspire me. Really! A few weeks ago, I decided to take my basement toilet, which had been flushing slowly and clogging frequently, off the floor because it had also started rocking. My youngest daughter helped me. (I have 3 kids, all daughters, so all DIY projects here are designed for Dad and whichever daughters are available.) We quickly discovered two things: First, the reason it was rocking is because it had been installed on an inch-high wood base that had been tiled over, and the wood had rotted to the point that it was mostly just soil, so the toilet was now balancing on a failing tile shell. Second, I had expected to find a toy or some other item lodged in the bottom of the toilet where my closet auger wouldn't reach, but there were no objects that I could see, and no matter which end I tried to snake it from, nothing came out. If there was anything in there, it was lodged tightly in the trap out of sight, or the slow flush was due to hardened sediment, or it was just a crummy, old, slow-flushing toilet. So a new toilet seemed to be the best way to go, but installing it was going to be, well, I could just see the dollar signs floating away with the cost of getting someone to build a new base or cut that drainpipe down to the floor level. Then I had a WWMD (What Would Meg Do?) moment. Would Meg give up and pay a pro for something like this? NO, I decided. Meg would talk to some knowledgeable people who wear plumber hats, do some online research, figure out how best to install a new toilet in that bathroom and then DO IT HERSELF! If Meg could do it, I should be able do it, and so that's exactly what I did, minus the video that Meg would undoubtedly make of the process. (Actually, I did take a few videos of my daughter working on it.) I did my research, found a way to make a new, waterproof base with a couple sheets of cement board, adhesive, concrete bolts (a belt-and-suspenders suggestion that I received along the way) and some leftover tile to make it all look nice. I had to fix a broken jigsaw (that took way too long) so I could cut the cement board, and had to buy a few new tools, such as a hammer drill and a couple types of tile cutters. And then we got down to work. My daughter was the superstar here, tracing lines for cutting because I couldn't do it accurately enough (the kid's an artist, so drawing straight lines and round circles freehand on pretty much anything comes naturally to her), and cutting most of the tile with both a straight score cutter and nips (she got pretty good at both). It took a few weeks to complete the project, mainly because it's best to wait for thinset to cure for a couple days before moving on to the next step, and the only day I have each week for DIY home projects is Sunday. But we finished the job last Sunday, and the new toilet is rock solid, has a very satisfying flush and the whole thing looks pretty good. Thanks, Meg, for providing the weekly dose of motivation!

Heartily concur. Y'all appear to be partners in creating your own place; good to see you working together. None of us is 100% self-sufficient. None of us have ALL of the knowledge, mechanical skill, tools and time to do 100% ourselves. Combining your abilities with another person is synergistic. We really do end up with more than the sum of the parts. Closer to 80 than 70, I've learned this first hand. Hope you two continue to build your lives together.

What a fantastic project. Tracked loader/skidsteer - a tool is an investment you'll benefit from job after job, compared to paying someone to do the job for you each time On our land in Arizona we budgeted to drill 300-500', so you're definitely better off in the river valley there for access to the aquifer! Mike did a sweet job on that drill rig, and you guys work really well together - he has a nice onscreen "energy". I think a channel for joint projects would be a great idea. Hitting sand/gravel is more exciting than gold 🙂 and what an incredible step forward this project represents. Well done!

For cutting the pipe with no plastics getting in well, use a pipe cutter that uses a wheel ( they should have one where you got your "drill stem") or possibly a string (may still get a little flakes in, but uses friction to cut the pipe, so maybe none)

Goo-Goggley-Goo!!!! I thought I was totally nuts when I lifted my late 1800s house to dig out the current partial basement to put a full basement in it. I did it all...lifted the house, did all the block work, and the concrete work. I had a friend or two come over to help me but it was still a lot of work. Our city building inspector thought I was nuts too when I went in to get the building permit but I did enough work on my house that I guess he trusted me...he gave me the permit. What you and Mike did was very impressive or as Spock would say "Fascinating.". You also joined what I call the Squirrel Club. "I have squirrels chasing me." "Why are squirrels chasing you?" "They think I am nuts."

I drilled my well 40 years ago and did it a little differently I auger down until I hit the sand at 15' and then switched to a casing platform and a sand bucket I slid the first 5' of the casing and set the casing platform on the casing and then added 2 30 gallon garbage barrels full of water for down word pressure and switched to the sand bucket mounted on a frame with a pulley and rope dropping the sand bucket into the well pulling sand out and the casing started to move down into the well when the first 5' of the casing was on the ground I glued on another 5' of casing on installed the casing platform and 2 barrels of water and back to the sand bucket. I reached 44' when I hit a clay bank that I couldn't punch through with the sand bucket. Stopped there I had 22' of water in the well this was used for my irrigation system and has never gone dry. I rented the casing platform, sand bucket, rope, and pulley from a local Rental company. cost was low just a lot of sweat labor. Loved what you guys did great job!

Water wells are like a magic mystery. You always want to drill farther to see what's down there. The drilling fluid also makes the specific gravity of the water heavier, and it actually floats the cuttings or holds them in suspension, so they travel out of the bore hole, and they drop out and do it all over again. Fun stuff.

This has nothing to do with the vid but I wanna share this story. Maybe 15-20 years ago my parents decided to have their own water source so they started working. They had to drill 20 or so meters to get fresh water. The way they did that was my dad took a long water pipe (metal ofc), drilled many holes and added a pointy cap at front, on the sides he welded pieces of scrap metal that he bent and they were at sharp angle. He dig a couple of meters down untill he hit gravel, put the pipe and hammered it in maybe a meter or so, next step was to weld a piece of metal that he would cut off later to act as support for another long piece of pipe that he would tie and it would look like T, then we children (i was very young at the time) would sit on the pipe and he would add sand bags and gravel buckets for added weight and then spin the entire construction in circles, many many circles. I remember it being so fun, like we were on an amusement park ride. Basically the pipe would screw itself down in the ground. Now, as of me writing this we are still using the same water source and same pipe its been in ground ever since.
