I'm in LA and can clarify a few things for you guys there. 1) LA hasn't had a drop of rain in eight months, so everything is dry as a bone. 2) Three new reservoirs were scheduled to be erected, but they were stopped by our governor and his people. 3) The environmental protection folks have fucked us Royally here. A) They said you can't remove the underbrush or do controlled burns because it might affect some frog no one has ever heard of. B) A record amount of runoff from the mountains has flowed down this way, but we can't capture any of it to store for emergencies like this because of a little fish called the Smelt. The smell is like a mix of fresh and saltwater to live in, and the runoff from the mountains helps maintain the salinization level around the coast. 4) The comment you made about the rich getting their houses back right away is probably not the case for many of them. In the last year, insurance companies have dropped thousands of fire insurance policies because California regulations cap the amount they can charge. Even if they weren't capped, the amount of the policy would cost so much that many people moved here decades ago when those houses were cheaper and weren't rich. Even for some of the wealthy, it would be a good lick. 5) The distance between these fires is indeed long. The Eaton and Palisades fires are entirely across town from one another, and the Hurst fire is at the top of LA. 6) Most of these fires start when homeless people start them. Some people even begin them as an act of Arson. Honestly, if an ember from an outdoor grill chipped off in the right direction and landed in the right bit of brush, that could set it off, given the conditions. 7) I don't know if you have been in hurricane-force winds, but they are crazy. I went outside during the first round of the stormy winds, and standing up was hard. I'm 6'0 "and 240lb, or 17.14 stone, for you guys. 🙂 8) Also, everyone in LA accidentally received an evacuation notice yesterday. WTF? It's a wholly mismanaged situation. 9) Our Mayor was in Ghana on a trip to help swear in their first woman to something. I don't know what it was. But, the winds were expected, as they are every year. The lack of moisture for months was known, and everyone and their mother knew there would be fires, but they didn't know how many or how bad. It stands to reason that if you know that going to Africa, which this woman has done a lot for many years and has advocated for Africa more than her own constituents, is a bad idea. Anyway, there is more that I could tell you, but that's just a little information that might help you guys overseas have more details on what's going on. Oh, and for context, I'm not far from the fires, and if the winds shift in the right way, I will be running. So, it sucks. I'm a lowly music composer for film and TV, no one you've heard of, most likely, but I live and work in my apartment, which isn't nice. So I'm not a wealthy guy telling you this stuff. Just an average guy and a fan of yours, Drinker. Keep up the good work you guys are doing. Through efforts from people like you guys and Nerdrodic and the others, you're helping to shift the world back to sanity. Even if it's millimeters at a time, every little bit helps. Cheers!!!

They haven't cleared the brush in 30 - 40 years. The female mayor of LA cut the fire department's budget by 17%(Edit: $17 million not 17%). The city council appointed the first lesbian female fire chief who went all in with the DEI and increased the number of women firefighters from 4% to 8%. Newsom vetoed a bill that would facilitate the natural flow of fresh water from Alaska to California to protect the delta smelt, a 2-3 inch fish endangered in California. The fire hydrants went completely dry trying to fight the fire because they didn't have enough water stored. The level of stupidity and incompetence is mind boggling. Edit: To clarify, natural flow of fresh water does not mean using rivers formed by nature. It means using the natural flow of water due to gravity instead of using pumps. There would be man made channels, pipe lines, and aqueducts. Yes, the planed 1,400 miles would be a massive project and almost twice the distance of the South-North Water Transfer Project in China, the longest current water transfer project, at 785 miles. Keep in mind, water is expensive in California, over twice the national average, and a lot of people live there and the state has the highest GDP in the country and would have the 5th largest economy globally if ranked as a country.

It's not that the companies knew these fires were going to happen. Although with California's mismanagement, this outcome was definitely predictable. Wrong. They didn’t run out of water. The hydrants in the higher elevations like in palisades run off of massive tanks of water due to them being difficult to pipe water into because of being in mountainous/hilly areas. These tanks are designed to fight 1-3 house fires at most, not thirty, with record high wind speeds that no one can control, the tanks ran dry because of the amount of water that was used at once. The homes in lower elevations fared better because the hydrants were hooked to water mains. Nice try though.

From what I've read, this was an absolute disaster waiting to happen. Both the Governor of California and the Mayor of LA were warned for months to clear out the vast amounts of underbrush, prepare water reservoirs, and approve another water supply that would flow from Alaska down to Cali in preparation for the wildfire season, and they ignored all of this advice. The Alaska water flow was denied to protect some endangered fish and frog species, the firefighters' budget was slashed by something like $17M and they appointed some DEI hire as the new Chief, the EPA and protesters wouldn't allow the state to carry out controlled burns (which are extremely necessary to contain future fires), and the Mayor decided to f*ck off to Ghana for some ceremony while all of this is happening. On top of that, many home insurance companies in California flat out don't cover many of these structures because of how expensive the risk is; and the few who actually are insured have to pay astronomical fees to stay covered (ie. rich celebrities -and even some of them can't afford the rates). As a result, many regular Californians just lost their homes with absolutely no way of recovering their expenses or fighting the fires. As a Canadian, we deal with our fair share of wildfires annually, (Aussies too), and I can tell you without a doubt that none of this can be blamed on these just being freak mastodon fires with no hope of containment, this is 100% sheer incompetence on behalf of Governor Gavin Newsom, Mayor Karen Bass, Chief Kristen Crowley, ignorant protestors, and corrupt EPA officials. Just to put things into perspective, many firefighters on the scene straight up can't do anything to douse these fires, because there is absolutely no water in sight to throw on the flames. All they can do is MacGuyver that $hit until foreign aid arrives, (and by then, it'll be too late). Don't get me wrong, I'm heartbroken seeing our American neighbours going through this, but at the same time, I hope this serves as a wakeup call to many to either exit the state or clean house within the government. This is a tragedy and not something to celebrate, but at the same time my honest reaction to this decades-long failure of municipal planning isn't a huge outpouring of sympathy either. One of the interesting things most people don't realize is that around 30% of the men fighting the fires are prison inmates, who are not allowed to use water, but instead must wield chainsaws and hand axes inside the burning forests to try and contain the spread. And they get paid only $20 a day, and are given one meal consisting of a single sandwich and an apple. Honestly, thinking of the dirty and dangerous jobs - many have died in the activity - these men are being forced to do really puts a lot of this disaster into perspective, and it doesn't put California or LA in a very positive light in my mind.

But we do backburning year round s we have to Too much foliage will just DRY OUT and is a disaster waiting to happen. Every June this takes place all trails are cleaned and moved up. There is no scrub around. I've certainly never heard of a fire hydrant with NO WATER. Besides the fire is literally next to the dam beach. Get those aircraft scoop it up and dump it on that burning crap. Don't they use chemicals as well to put out the fire? I mean this is just negligence at the highest level. It doesn't help when they cut 20 million bucks from the fire budget last year. California is literally insane. These are the same people that laughed in Texas face when they had a cold freeze, These are the same people who laughed their ass off at Floridians and De Santi's when it was hit with the Hurricanes. Gotta admit it's a great way to transfer prime real estate back to the banks for those that can't afford to rebuild. I think this was a pre-engineered disaster

The wayer bags are for small spot fires while the hoses work on large fires. They had water, the pressure dropped after 15hrs of heavy water usage. The water tanks used for water pressure couldnt be filled fast enough to maintain constant pressure up into the hills.

Just look up the videos of the governor talking about destroying dams to protect a certain salmon, lowering the amount of accessable fresh water to put the fires out

The smoke is reaching Fresno over 200 miles away. The school from Carrie in flames looks like a shot from the movie.

My granddad was a wilderness firefighter in CA back in the 1950s. I remember in the 1990s he was predicting that this very thing was going to happen sooner or later because of their crappy land management policies. I feel for the poor folks losing their homes, but there are people who saw this coming from miles away.
