It was one of my favorites until I found out it was based on a true story and as usual, the *real* story was far more interesting and could easily have been shown instead of what we got For instance, "In April 1972, (Lt. j.g Thomas R) Norris was one of few remaining SEALs in Vietnam serving with MACVSOG Danang Naval Advisory Detachment. When Lieutenant Colonel Iceal Hambleton was shot down behind enemy lines, aerial combat search and rescue operations failed, leading to the loss of five additional aircraft and the death of 11 or more airmen, two captured, and three more down and needing rescue. Norris was tasked with mounting a ground operation to recover Hambleton, Lieutenant Mark Clark, and Lieutenant Bruce Walker from behind enemy lines. Assisted by Vietnamese Sea Commando forces, he and Republic of Vietnam Navy Petty Officer Nguyen Van Kiet went more than 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) behind enemy lines and successfully rescued two of the downed American aviators. Walker was discovered and killed by the North Vietnamese Army. Though Norris at first rejected the honor, he was recognized with the Medal of Honor in 1975. His actions were dramatized in the movie Bat*21." *Medal Of Honor citation:* "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a SEAL Advisor with the Strategic Technical Directorate Assistance Team, Headquarters, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. During the period 10 to 13 April 1972, Lieutenant Norris completed an unprecedented ground rescue of two downed pilots deep within heavily controlled enemy territory in Quang Tri Province. Lieutenant Norris, on the night of 10 April, led a five-man patrol through 2,000 meters of heavily controlled enemy territory, located one of the downed pilots at daybreak, and returned to the Forward Operating Base (FOB). On 11 April, after a devastating mortar and rocket attack on the small FOB, Lieutenant Norris led a three man team on two unsuccessful rescue attempts for the second pilot. On the afternoon of the 12th, a Forward Air Controller located the pilot and notified Lieutenant Norris. Dressed in fishermen disguises and using a sampan, Lieutenant Norris and one Vietnamese traveled throughout that night and found the injured pilot at dawn. Covering the pilot with bamboo and vegetation, they began the return journey, successfully evading a North Vietnamese patrol. Approaching the FOB, they came under heavy machine gun fire. Lieutenant Norris called in an air strike which provided suppression fire and a smoke screen, allowing the rescue party to reach the FOB. By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, undaunted courage, and selfless dedication in the face of extreme danger, Lieutenant Norris enhanced the finest traditions of the United States Naval Service." Another good Vietnam flick is Flight of the Intruder

*The true story behind BAT-21 is even crazier than the movie, and I doubt they could have made it on their budget.* Dude got surrounded by NVA, called in scores of artillery/air strikes like a boss, saw five rescue attempts fail (he got shot down in the middle of the biggest combined arms NVA attack of the war), hid/evaded for a week, and then humped it as far as he could despite shrapnel wounds, a ripped finger, and a broken arm. He lost 45 pounds in the process. The SEAL, Lieutenant Thomas Norris and South Vietnam Navy Petty Officer 3d Class Nguyen who got him out broke orders to do so, going behind enemy lines and extracting him in daylight. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rescue_of_Bat_21_Bravo

Hollywood still screwed it up; the true story was even better, and should have been used instead. After BAT-21 was shot down, the SAR (Search And Rescue) helicopter was shot down, and that entire crew was lost as well. Because of the amount of men and equipment lost, command refused to launch any other missions. Listening to the radio traffic, and believing they were going about this rescue all wrong; a naval officer, who was also a Navy Seal Sniper, volunteered to rescue BAT-21. In tandem with his South Vietnamese Spotter, they both knew the area quite well. They blended in as two poor fishermen, and went upriver to the North, searching for BAT-21 (who had been evading for a week by that time). The Navy Seal, and his Spotter found BAT-21; and smuggled him out under fishing nets, as they went back down river. Even though the North Vietnamese were frantically searching for BAT-21, the Navy Seal and his Spotter got in and out without firing a single shot. That Navy Seal was awarded The Congressional Medal of Honor for rescuing BAT-21.

A single navy seal, Lieutenant Thomas R. Norris, and an escort, VNN commando Nguyen Van Kiet, snuck across enemy lines at night, traveling 3 kilometres, by foot and by small boat. For their bravery and action, Norris was awarded the Medal of Honor and Nguyen the Navy Cross. That one is very underrated Vietnam War movie. Gritty and completely unapologetic take on war, which also have a Vietcong viewpoint. Ermey is great in Firebase Gloria.

Other truly great movies set in a war setting that should be seen if they have not already are Breaker Morant (80s), Man Who Would Be King (70s), and of course, Dr Zhivago (60s).... And if you have not seen the 13th Warrior, its good too.....

Four top recommendations. Breaker Morant is scandalously underrated.

How the fuck did I not know about this movie?

Yep! Saw this too - made a lasting impact. After Hackman kills the father, we sees the family standing round him in shock, with one son already badly scarred from a napalm attack. In another, he meets a young boy who realises he'd not a threat and who triggers a boobytrap he would have walked into otherwise. Strong stuff that stays with you.

I shouldn’t watch these on my way to work. Now all I want to do is blow off the day and watch this movie.

Suddenly, Gene Hackman being cast in _Behind Enemy Lines_ makes a lot more sense. As Owen Wilson somehow didn't say in that movie: "Oh, wow!" That was an okay movie, and this looks like a much better version of it. Must watch.

Greatest films, music, style and attitude. Vietnam may have been lost, but it had an epic legacy.

13 years later, Owen Wilson went through similar set of events with Gene Hackman as his superior. Not sure if that was coincidental or intentional.

When they have the young pilot march through landmines and then they shoot him I was so angry at them and the entire village for allowing that kind of stuff that I cheered when they naped the whole place.

War is brutal. People commit atrocities on both sides. Besides, people die in wars. It's normal. What do you expect people to not kill their enemies in war. You missed the point of the scene, it was to show the brutality of war and how it affected the people on both sides.
