@@UToobUsername01 Please no on Robotech. It was a Harmony Gold cash grab that butchered 3 different anime into an incoherent story.
@UToobUsername012 жыл бұрын
@@joseph1150 Yes but it was part of pop culture of the 1980s. Transformers G1 was the big thing and Robotech was the first big mecha show adapted for american audiences. I know all about the butchering but macross never made it to the west in its japanese form. Plus I doubt Critical Drinker is going to get access to the dvd of macross since harmony gold had a big hand in blocking it. I heard that the legal issue was revolved recently and HG and Biog West made peace. But histporically nobody in the west apart from anime watchers of foreign versions knows it by the japanese name SDF:Macross. Most people in the west heard about it as Robotech. Just as Star Blazers is american Space Cruise Yamato. Was Space Cruiser Yamato ever shown in the 1980s? No. The theme of these videos is stuff that you thought was cool in the past. If something didn't release back then it doesn't qualify imo since nobody would have watched that version unless you belonged to an anime club which was just a tiny portion of society in those days with Akira being the first big push of anime to the west. (most normies know about that one because they pushed that one hard compared to other anime. For example OVA like MAcross Plus wasn't even known by Harmony Gold until fans pointed out: "hey how come you blocked all these other macross shows from japan but Macross Plus was allowed to come to the west?" HG response: "err uhh....yeah we didn't know that even existed." LOL What this shows is that most people weren't aware of the smaller animes. It was a niche still except if it showed on tv to large audience of people. OVA don't count since that is the equivalent of a direct to video DC and marvel one off animated story. For example there is a huge "DC animated universe" that exists alongside the DC Cinematic Universe that Critical Drinker could cover if he wanted to but for some reason direct to video stuff is always under the radar as if it's not as relevent as live action blockbuster movies.

Actually, here in Spain it was directly named "Los Siete Magníficos del Espacio" (The Seven magnificent in Space), instead of translating Battle Beyond the Stars... I saw it in the theater 40 years ago, and had a blast. I want so much to watch it again... Roger Corman is a genius. I will never consider his Poe's (and Lovecraft's, with Haunted Palace) adaptations as campy trash, considering the amount of nightmares they gave me when I was young. The Masque of Red Death is one of the best horror movies ever (Richard Matheson's screenplay helps...), and if The Fall of the House of Usher or The Pit and the Pendulum doesn't send shivers down your spine, then nothing will. The one that gave me most nightmares, though, is that Sci-Fi/Horror masterpiece, The Man with X-Ray eyes. I actually made my Medicine practice of Surgery in the Ophtalmology Department, just to try and exorcize the memories of being terrified by that movie as a child. The ending is one that you won't forget easily... And the first Little Shop of Horrors, that he shot in a day and a half (!)... As you say, he even gave their first important works in movie production to people like James Cameron, or Francis Ford Coppola. He knew talent when he saw it, that's for sure.

I'd also like to point out this is one of the few Sci Fi action films in the vein of Star Wars featuring a larger than life, megalomaniacal villain that actually allows for the unexpectedly human touch of said villain being shown in despair when he realizes he's about to die. Usually in these movies we get either a final shot of the bad guy looking stoic just before the room turns into a fireball or a cutaway to an exterior shot of their ship/space station/ secret lair being destroyed. Not here. John Saxon's final moments are spent crying out in disbelief because he actually thought he was going to live forever. This really is an exceptional movie.

The script by John Sayles was a damn-near perfect combination of humor and melodrama. Everything seemed to just come together naturally and the climax is absolutely nail-biting. Props to Richard Thomas for being able to hold his own alongside acting legends like Vaughn, Peppard, and Saxon. It's no wonder Corman CONSTANTLY reused scenes for his other films, as the effects are terrific.

@@carlfromtheoc1788 Oh, I'm well aware of Corman's reputation as probably the ultimate production scrooge. Unfortunately, from a personal standpoint, reusing BBtS' effects in other movies was a hellacious attention diverter. It got so bad that, in my youth, I began to wonder if Corman had lost the rights to BBtS and other studios were poaching scenes for their non-Corman films. That's before I understood that Corman himself was the poacher, which kinda made it even worse. It was just as belief un-suspending as when James Horner reused a Wrath of Khan track for Cocoon's finale. I wish other Corman flicks didn't resort to using scenes from BBtS, as the movie deserves far, far better than being carrion meat for other, unconnected productions.

I've always loved this movie from when I was a kid. Aside from the obvious BEWWB's there's some individual great acting , great death scenes . The characters death scenes have more gravitas and meaning than anything done so far in Disney Star Wars . Christ even the sacrifice and 'death' of Zeds ship has more emotional pull than a certain character in Kenobi .See what can be done with a just a smidge of effort . And without The Volume to prop you up. This even has "strong female characters " whilst simultaneously having fantastic BEWB's 🤗 Who would of thought that possible? Film score fans still remember it because of Horner's first major outing, the likes of which (and his ability to imitate a rousing Goldsmith scor) lead to him getting offered "The Wrath of Khan" (1982) when the budget didn't allow for Goldsmith. From there, the rest is history.

A lot of film score collectors commented that he recycles themes from one film to the other (compare this one to Wrath of Khan, while Titanic is a combo of Braveheart and Courage Under Fire).
