It's been a while since I've done an Extra Shots review, and I'm coming back with an absolute banger this time. Not an action movie or a thriller, but a compelling psychological drama starring Mads Mikkelsen as a teacher whose life spirals out of control after he's falsely accused of a crime.

Fun fact: Mads Mikkelsen himself has said he firmly disagrees with political correctness and I think making this movie helped him feel this way. A genuinely difficult film to watch at points.

I don’t even know if it’s about caving into social pressures though. To me the most interesting part was that his own best friend, someone he’d known all his life, refused to believe or trust him even after he was proven innocent. It wasn’t that society pressured him to despise his friend, it’s the “villain in all of us” thing you started the comment with which comes from the seed of doubt. It’s one thing to avoid a guy you’ve heard only rumors about, but another thing entirely to refuse to believe your best friend when he’s proven innocent.

There are two social pressure mechanisms in action here. The first is what is called "groupthink" in psychology, which is characterized by the individuals not using their own intelligence and experience to judge the situation, but instead simply following the judgement of the group to be socially accepted by it. The second is not wanting to defend a person who is being ostracised by the group because of being afraid of having the same treatment. In this case, someone who defended him would be accused of "defending pedophilia" or being the "friend of pedophiles". This kind of situations are perfect for understanding who are your real friends. They are not the ones which most want to share the entertainment moments, but the ones which will stand by our side when it is hard to do so. As @wasim.j said, these are the strategies that were used by political authorities and legacy media to shame those who didn't agree to restrict people's freedoms, to force face masks and to inject themselves with a genetic manipulator.

I took class with a guy who was accused of doing something terrible to a girl at a party (you can guess what I mean by this). He was fortunate that many of his friends stood by him, and even some friends of the "victim" came to his defense, but throughout the entire investigation he was basically cast out by most people. Seeing him go from a normal socially active person to a shell of a guy who would sit quietly in the back of a classroom only to disappear once class was over is something that stuck with me. He was eventually cleared, but it took months for a lot of people to treat him normally again. And several of his friends who abandoned him never sought his friendship again even after being proven innocent. I hope he's doing well now, but I gotta imagine he's never been the same since. A false accusation is something I truly fear after seeing what happened to him.

I worked with a girl like that. She was always a drama queen and had everyone's phone number and facebook so she could share that drama. I slowly started to see how she influenced peoples behaviour this way and turned them against anyone she didn't like. If anyone was interested in her but she didn't share that interest, suddenly they were a stalker. If someone got angry with her because she screwed them around, they were a psychopath. When I had a falling out with her and she quit it felt like a curse was lifted off the workplace. Unfortunately, a few months later she got a job at my local bar and all the female staff that were always friendly with me suddenly weren't. No doubt she told them I was going there just to stalk her despite the fact I was drinking there even when she was working with me. That's the dangerous effect narcissists can have on people and the damage they can do.

I don't know. In the 1980s in the US many psychologists began flexing their power by leading kids into false accusations that they never made until pressured into it. There were a lot of innocent men railroaded that way who were later exonerated and released. To this day, women with kids are irrationally fearful and suspicious of any man walking by himself, as though every one of us is likely to be a predator.

On the contrary, I think that this movie has a sadly timeless message. There have always been instances where someone fabricated a story in order to ruin someone they don’t like, and sadly in an age dominated by social media, it seems like there doesn’t have to be any kind of proof present at all before throwing others under the bus for something they may not have done. Innocent until proven guilty is supposed to be a legal precedent that is sadly being forgotten in the world we live in.

My impression when I lived in Europe during the 2010s (not in Denmark) was that something really special was going on with the Danish film and television industry. They were making great movies and series that didn't flinch from asking difficult questions and taking a very nuanced adult perspective. While back in my home country, there were concentrating on simplistic entertainment about magic men and Strong Independent Females that make things go "boom". I know the trajectory the entertainment industry in the US took that brought us to this sad state of affairs in the mid 2020s, and being out of the loop of what's going on in Denmark, I can't help but wonder if they're still producing the same level of quality.

Its hard to watch, but rewarding at the same time, reminding us that we should always hear both sides of any story before deciding to just listen to the one that we believe could never lie to us. Hell, if I have the time, I'll watch it again tonight!

Unfortunately fake accusations are becoming increasingly common these days, and not from child's, but from adults that should know the consequences of such allegation. I fear this will keep happening as long as there aren't any legal consequences to the false accuser.

I am so happy you enjoyed this movie as it's not just one of Thomas Vinterbergs best movies (and that's saying something), but also one of Mikkelsen's best performances (and that's also saying something). The cast also contains some of the best danish actors and it goes to show (in the example of Mikkelsen) that Hollywood completely neglects their talent, although I am sure, they're probably more confident in acting in their own language. If you enjoyed this movie, I can highly recommend "After the Wedding" by Susanne Bier, Adam's Apples by Anders Thomas Jensen and "Festen" (The Party) the debut movie by Thomas Vinterberg, a dogme movie that put danish cinema on the world map! Honestly, watch "Festen" it's fantastic!

I saw this years ago, on Netflix, I believe. I thought I had watched it on the Drinker's recommendation, but evidently not. It's a good cautionary tale about not following mobs, regardless of the alleged issue at hand. Always think for yourself and demand evidence of any supposed wrongdoing.

I recommend The Celebration (1998) by the same director. It was the very best of the Dogma '95 films. It deals with equally difficult subject matter (a man publicly challenging his father with his childhood sexual abuse). It is one of my favorite Danish films. I consider Thomas Vinterberg Denmarks second best living director - after von Trier and before Winding Refn.

So glad you watched this film, I saw it a few years ago and wow, it really hits home. What you have to remember is that Denmark is very liberal (as in the real definition of the word and not as in politics) country, i.e sauna culture, being ok with nudity etc. For this to happen in that setting makes it even more powerful. In more 'Free' countries the hounding of the individual would be even worse. It may be worth taking into account that in the intervening decade attitudes have become way worse post meeee2. so the effect is amplified. Glad you are continuing to watch some 'foreign films' as opposed to the dross Hollywood continues to produce. I have done so all my life and find them far more gratifying, emotional, dark, endearing, sensual, provocative and satisfying than the soulless, formulaic tripe churned out by the machine. Keep up the good work Sir.

As a Dane it's awesome to see you reviewing this! It's easily one of the most horrifying movies ever. To anyone who wants see Mikkelsen in another of his best roles, go watch Blinkende Lygter (Flickering Lights). It's probably the best showcase of the dark and satirical nature of Danish humor and many would argue it's the best Danish movie ever made (myself included) 😁

This was very strange to see this video notification pop up. This movie is 13 years old this year and I watched it for the first time two weeks ago completely randomly, not knowing what it was about, then all of a sudden the drinker uploads this. I'm not particularly superstitious but sometimes I feel like the universe we live in is a lot stranger than we think it is.

A great film that I watched during the 2020 lockdowns, a reminder that sometimes it’s better to stay inside than be out in the world, because who can bear false witness then? But seriously, without giving away the ending, it shows you how these sorts of accusations can truly ruin someone’s life and how even the passage of time doesn’t necessarily repair all the damage caused.

Great movie! It was interesting that a few of the women in the movie seemed to want the accusations to be true. When the girl tells her mom that she made the story up, the mom reassures her that the abuse happened. The head teacher at the school does something similar, leading the girl to make up more details. I thought the ending was great where Mads' character doesn't blame the little girl, and extends the olive branch.

Mads Mikkelsen is at the top tier of modern performers. I didn't think it was possible for anyone to play Hannibal Lecter after Hopkins, but Mads absolutely crushed it. He crushed it so much that he actually became my favorite Hannibal. He is just a stunningly talented and hard working actor.

Time to do some re-reviews of old movies that flopped, Drinker. Constantine with Keanu Reeves is a good start, since it is a good contrast with modern superhero fare and is a movie that was much better than it was made out to be and holds spectacularly well even today. Not to mention that in 2024 feels like the ‘anti’-superhero trends of the modern era.

Reminds me of the whole thing that happened with ProJared. A messy divorce turned into accusations of abuse, infidelity, and pedofilia. And people jumped on Jared. People could say anything, lie about everything, and people believed it. A lot of people’s reasoning being “he’s guilty because…I mean look at him!” I wish I was kidding. I saw that a lot. I’m glad Jared survived that whole ordeal and is back to work making content, but it scarred him and his reputation. Not many people do. Side note. I love how being a “white knight” for women is a negative, cringeworthy offense, but the moment a woman claims abuse, regardless of context or situation, it’s “you better listen to me or be cast out and killed!” Don’t try to be subservient to women, unless they need you for their own means, but the woman isn’t ever in the wrong for doing it, I guess. You know. Like how thugs are guilty of doing crimes, not the boss who payrolls, equips, and sends them, right?

There is literally no actor in the English speaking world who would have went anywhere near a script where their character goes through something like this. In Hollywood a publicist or agent would have told a male actor to avoid this role completely because " modern audiences " don't want to see a movie where a man can be falsely accused of such things. Same if there was a role where a man was falsely accused of some form of " ism ", nobody would touch that in Hollywood. Brave role to take on .

I'm something of a social pariah as a single asextual introvert. There's this general issue where people assume I'm not ace, I'm just repressed or something. This movie really nailed home the fact I need to stay away from any and all situations that could implicate me, as I'm a highly rare person and vulnerable to false accusations. I refuse to be alone with children, for one thing. It also brought home the harm porn can cause on young minds. It shouldn't be so accessible, but alas.

This movie underscores one of my biggest fears. That an accusation, without any proof, truth or grounding in reality, can destroy your life because people instantly assume the worst. Public perception is everything, and there's no more presumption of innocence. A teacher my mother knew of had a similar experience, accused by a trio of girls of indecent behaviour, probably because they were failing his class. He lost his job, his marriage, his kids and ultimately his life to suicide, yet when it actually came to trial their story fell apart and they admitted they'd made it up. Those kids never suffered any consequences for their actions, but a man's life was destroyed by the accusation alone. We need to do better.

He already gave hints about the ending, but I already had sorta readied my expectations. The thing about these non-Hollywood, Scandinavian movies is that they don't give a damn about their character having a happy ending. If it fits the story, the main character might just end up dead by overdose in a ditch. Dark and gray endings are no rarity so you can never be sure.
