My little brewing group are all meeting up at one our members' house on the 28th October for our very own 'Festoff'. We have all brewed versions of Oktoberfest biers. Mine's a Märzen which I brewed in April (near enough). I'll be taking homemade sausage rolls and focaccia. Clash of cultures but you get the idea. Chaps, this is all the inspiration I need. Thanks.

Just to help you out. I am john with the Thirsty Historian in Munich. a couple of facts for you. You have to brewer with in the city limits and your well has to draw water from within the city. The reason other breweries are not YET allowed to serve at Oktoberfest is becausse they need to make enough for the Wiesn and for local consumption. Hacker Pschorr and Thomas Brau were all together. They also have the Pschorr Bräurosl. 10,600 seats in the Paulaner Winzrer Fähndl.

BTW: Giesinger Bräu _could_ now also pour at Oktoberfest, they now have the label "Münchner Bier" since they got their deep well quite recently. Of course, they're too small to have a tent or anything but they _do_ qualify.

Life hack from a german here (I live about an hour away from munich) : Don't go to Oktoberfest. You can get the same beers or at least beers in a similar style for a fraction of the price in regular supermarkets. Oktoberfest or Wiesn is a big tourist trap and a bit of a scam. Try to get to some small village "Pfarrfest" (or maybe some "Volksfest" for the Funfair stuff) or similar events if you really want the Blasmusik and all that stuff. Oh and also here's a little linguistic help: We germans don't really have silent letters. If there's a P the P will be pronounced. So it really is Pschorr (Pshor) not "Shore". "Gemütlichkeit" can also be translated to "Cozyness" or "chill vibes" (as in chill out) kinda.
@lars5174
@lars5174 Жыл бұрын
....sorry for spamming but the "äu" "Bräu" is kinda like a londoner saying "Oi". It's not "ow".
@TheCraftBeerChannel
@TheCraftBeerChannel Жыл бұрын
Totally understand that it's a tourist trap, but how is it a scam? I know locals think it is overpriced, but by the pint it is still less than half the price of a UK pint....
@lars5174
@lars5174 Жыл бұрын
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Well yeah ok compared to UK prices it might be ok but man even the food is insanely expensive and not even that great. This year the Liter was 13 Euros. You can get a whole case of real high quality beers for that here. Also some of the Steins aren't even filled up. It's just a lot of foam you're paying for if the server isn't doing it right.

couple things, as your designated Bavarian viewer. Theresienwiese is the place, so her name in English was Theresa, German Therese, and the other part is wiese, pronounced veezuh. Robbie Williams is usually, and should only be played at the end as a closing song. Besides that West Virginia, Sweet home Alabama, I will survive, and das Fliegerlied are the typical daily songs. The Oida Wiesn has more traditional songs Local word for Oktoberfest is Wiesn, pronounced veezen. Love the vids man!

@@TheCraftBeerChannel it feels like such a dick move to correct the video, so I'm sorry my German-ness came out like this. Also a quick bit of info, the Paulaner brewery moved a few years back for a few reasons, they wanted to expand and the well they dug downtown dried up. They moved out to Langwied and every Münchener swears that the taste changed, which some like and of course many hate. So I'm glad you guys like it since I always felt they got judged unfairly since the move. Another bit of info is that there is a push to add some tents, rather than have 20 of the same carnival game, people think adding 2 more tents would be nice. The beers for those tents are pushing from 4 breweries, Giesing, Tegernsee, Erding, and Chiemsee. There are a few others like Andechs from your Weißbier video. Giesing is a newer brewery that is located downtown, so they fit the criteria and people wonder why they haven't been allowed yet. Tegernsee is a very popular helles and many think it's the best, so they argue it should be at the Wiesn even though it is very outside of München. Erding is a funny story, because they were excluded from the Wiesn, because they are on the outskirts of town, so they always went to the other oktoberfests in spite. Now, Paulaner is just as far out of town as Erding, so everyone is wondering what the excuse could be to still exclude them. Chiemsee is just another really great helles that people think should be allowed to participate, since the king did plop an unfinished palace right in the middle of their lake. So yeah, so fun Wiesn info/drama

The festbier they had was fantastic, but unfortunately there is no way to find the festbier in the US as far as I can tell. I can't say for the UK, but it definitely seems like they widely distribute the marzen instead of the festbier.

I went to Octoberfest in 1980. I thought it was only 4 breweries but I may be confused. The first day we were there the park was closed because of a terrorist bomb. Didn't stop us from going the next 4 days. German beer is still my favorite all these years later.

Great film lads, probably not your most professional offering but entertaining all the same. Highlight was Brad's response to Spaten inventing the fridge. 😆 Ordered all of those beers a couple weeks ago, apart from the Augustiner, as you say it's difficult to get hold of, although the company I ordered from got some in the day my box arrived ! 😠 I think the Paulaner one cost £3.20 which was reasonable but then I went in my local Aldi and they were selling it at £1.85 ! I bought 10. Would agree I was disappointed in the Hofbrau offering myself, much prefer their normal offering.

Thanks for explaining the difference between Marzen and festbier, that always tripped me up. The Spaten Oktoberfest they sell in the States is brown and is labeled a Marzen. Weird how the stuff they serve in the beer tent is different from that

I had four days at the fest last week. The Augustiner was my favourite beer but the HB was my favourite tent.

Love all six breweries. I drink them all year round. Pretty much the only beers I'll drink are from Bavaria.

Apparently, the Spaten Oktoberfest we get in the States is different than the one you tasted. It's far more malty and amber-colored. It's my favorite Oktoberfest beer.

Indeed! Seems the US gets the traditional Marzen, and Europe gets the Festbier.

I actually enjoyed the Paulaner the least this year. It tasted quite boozy and rough to me, compared to the others. I think what makes the beer such a bestseller in Germany is that it‘s available virtually everywhere. For years, they used to do these promos of a Maßkrug and a 1 liter can that you could buy in many supermarkets, and this year even Aldi sold it in cans.

Interesting! We didn't get any of that - odd as these breweries are usually so incredibly consistent.

Augustiner Oktoberfest was relatively easy to find in the UK just a couple of years ago. Still the best too.

Let me draw your attention to Giesinger Bräu. It is the latest brewery in Munich, that now also has it's own water supply. That is within the ruleset, to be called a "Original Müncher Hell" (original lager from Munich). So technically it also, would be able to sell their beer at Oktoberfest. But as we all know tradition is nothing that is changed quickly and this brewery is a hobby project that somewhere started in 2005 and culminated in a complete new brewery within the city border of Munich.

That is the brewery we were referencing in the video. It would be amazing to have a new brewery at Oktoberfest one day!

@@TheCraftBeerChannel The biggest challenge, they are facing right now, is their output. At the moment of writing, they have an output of about 30000 hectolitres per year. They are trying to reach up to 45000 in the near future. But to play with the big boys at Oktoberfest, they need to have an out of 7000 for 14 days. Yes days ... So a big way ahead for them. But I am very happy that you already know about Giesinger. It is even hard for locals, to get that kind of beer. Maybe you are lucky and will try it in the near future. Prost!

If I had to bet, I would bet that ALL of them are good because Marzen is a good recipe and because they're all German. Can hardly go wrong with German (or Czech) beer.

A Mass is a unit for the volume and measures 1 Liter. A Mass-Krug (jug) can be made of glass and stein. On the Oktoberfest the glass ones just more popular.

Schneider had a Oktoberfest Weiße this year, classical Schneider wheat beer with cascade hops. You should try that one! Also thanks for the video, I learned how to properly pour from a Bügelflasche!
