"BAYERN DES SAMMA MIA"
@byghostlight12 жыл бұрын
still my greatest and confusing German memory was attending the closing of a night at the Spring Festival in Munich, in one of the halls. The atmosphere was unlike anything I had ever experienced before, beer was flying, people were dancing on table tops and then they started playing Robbie Williams Angels, and the place just erupted in singing. Until this I had no idea why that song, but that memory still is the greatest travel memory ever.

It was the same in the Pschorr tent on Thursday night, the place went crazy, i had no idea it was such a big song in Munich. The entire tent was on the benches and tables bouncing and singing along at the top of their voices. Amazing.

I am so excited! Tomorrow I am on my way to München and the Oktoberfest. I live in the US now, but I was born in München and my Grandfather was a Kappelmeister ( bandleader) when I was little. It's been 52 years since I was there! I used to go on stage with his band, and he would let me "play" along on my little plastic toy instruments. Such fond memories. Thank you Feli for the quick lesson!

Wow! Memories! Many thanks! I was a US student in Germany in 1991 and am shocked at how many of the German songs from your list I recognize and can even sing forth after all these years (despite not having been much into the music scene). I especially remember "Marmor Stein und Eisen Bricht" and the classic drinking hall songs. I know the song but did not know the story behind "Skandal im Sperrbezirk." You did a super job presenting this list!

I will never be able to travel, but I was lucky enough to go to at least three Bear Mountain Oktoberfests near Peekskill, NY with my late husband. The crisp autumn air and the leaves flying, the aroma of outdoor-grilled sausages and meats, the gift and folk-art stalls, and especially the gemütlichkeit. As for music, I'm a traditionalist. My husband and I polka'd to the the brass band playing really old German (and some Polish) standards. We and complete strangers chatted and laughed together as we sat at long tables. We all raised our huge steins and rocked back and forth (singing along as best we could) to "Eins Zwei G'suffa". Wonderful way to celebrate autumn!

I am from the US but lived in Germany for 4 years from 2000 to 2004. Robbie Williams was king. When I moved back to the states, no one knew who Robbie was. I was in disbelief that a world-famous singer like him was unknown in the US.

Thank you for this! My father was German, born a few years before the war, and after bouncing around Germany throughout the war (avoiding places that were targets for air raids, etc.) they settled in Munich after the war. (My grandfather was held as a POW there.) The singing is such a Bavarian thing! My father loved to sing, and we'd spend hours singing together - in the car while driving, he'd make up cute lyrics to songs that were about us kids, etc. I can just imagine him there, beer in hand, but so busy singing he forgets to drink! (He died of COVID, in a nursing home with dementia, in early 2021, but our last wonderful outing was to the Sterling Renascence Festival in 2017, where he sat and sang along with the musicians, and had a lovely memory that stuck with him even as his condition deteriorated. Look up the group "Empty Hats" here on youtube, there are a lot of videos of them, and they brought him such delight that day.) Oktoberfest is over this year, but next year, if you can, raise a glass and sing a song in my father's honor. (Not like you wouldn't be doing those things anyways!)

And in an odd coincidence, I bought a Viva TV compilation CD (in a gas station of all places) that had the song on it. So, a year later I must retire from playing bass in my band due to medical issues. On the same day in 2024 when you start Octoberfest, I play my final show. Some kind of connection. It amazes me how many connections there are between my last show and my love for Germany and my 16 years there. So here in Arizona the summer lingers, and I watch so many of your videos as well as the live streams and I am now about to finish the last of my Pauliner. Soon here the colder days will arrive, but I still hold this very special Octoberfest in my heart and I will finish the last of my German beers tommrow night. Until next year. Prost my good friends🍻

I arrived in Munich many years ago on October 7th, hoping for a great experience. It was pretty much over by then; the city being in a beer and roast chicken stupor... But persistence paid off, and we ended up at the Stammtisch at the Augustiner after a couple of weeks. Just enough German to be regularly polite to the very hard working and helpful ladies working there.

Geboren in die Jahren '60 erkannte ich fast alle Deine nummer, Macht es gleich deutlich wie alt ich schon bin😅Ich glaube ich muss mahl zum Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest has been celebrated at a German school nearby me for years. I started going there in the mid-70's. Loved the party, the food, and of course, the drink. I do enjoy the dirndls also. No mention of Melissa Naschenwang? Not exactly October fest classic but a real crowd pleaser, especially her song "die ganze nacht".

I'll be coming back to München (25-28.09), 6 years since last time, for my first ever Oktoberfest! Really looking forward to it!

I’ve heard of Robbie Williams back in the 90’s when I was a kid. He wasn’t that popular though. Oktoberfest looks like fun! I love learning about other cultures. My cousin, Mattia, from Italy 🇮🇹, went and even wore Lederhosen.

He was likely about a decade too late to catch fire here in the States. His whole cheesy pop-crooner schtick seems more suitable for 80's US. By the late 90's, American 'kids' were into hip-hop, rock/grunge/nu-metal/punk, electronica, and hippie/folksy stuff.

I'm probably the only American on here that regularly listens to Schlager and Ballermann musik. The videos are even better than the lyrics. Great video by the way!

I knew of Robbie Williams from Take That "Back for Good" in 1996. I was surprised when I heard Angels at Oktoberfest in 2018.

Great job Feli. As someone from Minga I really enjoyed your video. Very well done 👍 in explaining the distinct differences and uniqueness of Wiesn :)

When using blackletter typeface (Frakturschrift) for "Oktoberfest" the st should be a long-s and t ligature and not a separate round-s (used only at the end of a syllable).

Thank you, I wanted to comment on this, too. But then I thought it'd be to complicated to explain. 👍

I have heard the song Angels sung by a German cover band called The Baseballs. They take "modern" songs, mostly from the 2000's onward, and perform them in a 50s or 60s Rock style. For instance they sing "Under my Umbrella" like an early Beatles song, "Chasing Cars" like Jerry Lee Lewis might have, and "Candy Shop" in the style of the Beach Boys.

Während ich einige dieser Songs echt gut finde gehen mir gerade die Party-Schlager-Songs nach einem Abend bereits schon so auf den Sack, dass ich dann noch mehr trinken muss um es auszuhalten... xD

Feli I just came across your channel lately. Your fresh and energetic style is infectious. I was in Munich many moons ago and had one of the best times of my life there at Oktoberfest. Anyway I saw you mentioned Fredericksburg TX Oktoberfest. Should you ever visit Fredericksburg I'd be honored to have a beer with you at our Oktoberfest. I'm sure you would be treated somewhat as a celebrity here... It would be fun to watch you do all the autographs on T shirts. Froliche Weinachten to you. Thanks for the videos.

Small correction: Udo Jürgens was actually Austrian, not German, from Carinthia. Fun fact: he is the worldwide longest represented singer in the charts in the world: from 1958-2015. He also sang the intro for the kids TV series Tom and Jerry as well as Once upon a Time...Man in German. And a small personal anecdote: Some 18 years ago I worked at a small hut for cyclists to refresh themselves by a bike path. And wo showed up completely sweaty after a long ride? The lead singer of STS :D

For me as a German who is not interested in football, your video was quite helpful because I never understand chants during football TV broadcast, and now I know what they are singing in the stadium (the Allee and BVB one). I was always wondering but had never known how to google the lyrics of those chants.
