From the Film Australia Collection. Made by Film Australia 1978. Directed by Greg Reading. This film depicts the prevailing attitudes of youth to drinking and driving in the late 1970s, when the blood alcohol legal limit in most Australian states was higher than today.
The young people discuss social pressures and what they regard as their ‘safe’ level of alcohol intake.
In an instructive and non-sensational way, the film also presents information about alcohol and the body, road deaths and includes controlled driver tests.

Yay! Been hoping this one would appear for a long time...I remember that the animations were used in TV messages in the 1980s.

The thing to keep in mind is that before RBTs, pretty much EVERYONE drove home drunk from the pub. The attitude to drink driving has definitely changed since then, but now we've got the new problem of drivers using mobile phones, which are now the biggest scourge on the roads. It's the same excuse from these people as the drink drivers too - either 'I'm a good driver so I won't crash', or 'I know I shouldn't be doing it but I'll take the risk'. I'd estimate phone use is more prevalent on the roads today than drink driving was in the 1970s.

Like many people, I have mobile phone. But I don't use it while I'm driving. If I see that someone is trying to reach me, I pull over wherever it's safe to do so before responding.

Just used this vid to show in a safety session at my work. WOW how things have changed and a real eye opener for many of the young team members on how drink driving was acepted to some degree in the 70's. Will people be saying the same in 30 years about mobile phone use in vehicles. ???

When they had the tv advertising in early 80's I didn't know what it meant. Dad got pulled in to a rbt and the cop said have you had anything to drink? I piped up and said yes he had a drink before when driving, dad got put on the bag and oh boy i had a sore ass when we got home. At least i can laugh now. Lol

It was very common to drive to a hotel, drink a few beers and drive home. If you were caught it was just considered bad luck. Roadside RBT changed all that. Drinking and driving was encouraged with clubs and hotels having large car parks to accomodate many cars. You could only drink on Sundays at a hotel if you were a 'bona fide' traveller and were more than 20 km from your home. That meant driving some distance to spend an afternoon drinking beer then driving home and usually you carried passengers. A lot of workers would stop off and have a few beers before continuing home. I worked at a place where staff would pile into some cars and go for a counter lunch at a nearby hotel. It was mostly about drinking as much as you could in the lunch hour then returning to work. I make no apologies for being a part of that which happened 45 years ago as it was mostly at the time perceived as normal.behavior.

Same here. got done for DUI back in 1986. drunk as a skunk. was trying to drown some personal issues. big mistake. blew .245. lost my licence for 2 years 3 months. now I just stay home if I want to have a couple drinks. if I'm out and I have to drive I'll have one and thats it.
