For people wondering how did the water boil: The boiling point of water is a function of both temperature and pressure, at normal atmospheric pressure water boils at around 100° C, but if the pressure is lowered, the boiling point also reduces. Here he has created vaccum inside pipe and as the water level rises up in straw the pressure keeps on reducing as water rises up (pressure head converts into datum head, bernoulli's principle) so boiling point is so low that even at room temperature water gets boiled. Edit: Answering common questions 1. No water is not hot, its at room temperature and still boiling. 2. In well and buildings, they push water instead of sucking it, so it doesnt boil. 3. PV=nRT is not applicable as it is ideal ‘gas’ equation. Cant use it for water(liquid). 4. Yes, if water is cooler, then it can be sucked much higher.

We did this in our science block staircase back in high school. The teacher asked one kid to try and we measured/marked it, and then he asked one of the kids that had asthma to have a go. Before she started the teacher asked us what we thought the results would be - higher or lower than the other kid. Everyone thought that it would be lower because they had asthma but WOW were we wrong, she was able to get the liquid markedly higher because her lung muscles were much stronger than others without asthma. It was a fascinating and easy experiment to do with kids our age 12-13 years old. I’ve never forgotten it that’s for sure.

At even more extreme low pressures the water can never be in a liquid state and will convert directly from vapor to ice depending on the inflection temperature point. The phase diagram shows where these temperatures are for a matter to turn from gas to liquid to solid.

Plumber here 👋 pumps do suck water and they also push as well. The suction side pulls water in and the discharge side pushes it out. You may be thinking about a submersible pump which is always placed at the source but if you wait for the water to get really low, you will hear a sound similar to a straw sucking out the bottom of a cup.

For those wondering, boiling doesn’t mean hot, it means changing from liquid to gas. As said by others in the comments it is a function of pressure and temperature.

And no the water is not hot. It boils because there is no atmosphere pressure pushing down on it. So it turns to gas. Have you ever seen liquid nitrogen poured out on to a table. It boils but it is at subfreezing temperature. Boil does not mean heat. It means the point a liquid turns to a gas. Many different kinds of liquids boil or turn to gas at different atmospheric pressures and temperatures. I hope I helped. Give a thumbs up..

Is the following correct? Imagine those blobs of liquid floating around in the international space station when astronauts mess around with their drinks. That atmospheric pressure inside the station is along with surface tension is keeping the blob together. If there was a breach inside the capsules and the pressure dropped, there would be nothing pushing against the liquid blobs keeping them together any more and they would break up more and more and turn into a gas, essentially boiling away.
