Quick follow up comment: Margaret Qually came in the audition with a low key accent. They told her to ham it up. I think it sounds horrible! I say this, as someone who grew up in the south.
@olsh6668 ай бұрын
Growing up in the south I knew some people that talked like Margaret Qually in this movie but they themselves always seemed to be "hamming it up" by really leaning into their accents. you know what I mean? Then over the years I met people in other parts of the country that did their versions of it too... my sister lived in New York for many years and when I visited the city I loved to hear some of the people that lived in the different boroughs because it reminded me of some folks I knew in the south, guys that just turned the twang dial to eleven but then sometimes you'd hear them talking seriously to someone, or conducting business of some sort, and their twang dial would be turned way down... ever know any of those guys? Where once in a while you'd hear how they actually talk? And it's really just a little twang ... like you and everyone else you know in town? Her character reminds me a lot of how those guys talked when they were turned up. In a way, it also reminds me of a few characters in Fargo... I do remember around that time someone from North Dakota telling me much of the accent stuff in that movie was very exaggerated. There are obviously huge differences in Fargo and this movie and just so much going on in Fargo that the accents blend into the whole in their own way, there's a great balance of tones going on there. ...but in this film I think her accent ends up standing out too much, that's the best way I can describe it. They should have just let her do her low-key version, probably was good and a better fit for the movie, she can be really good. A case of overdirecting maybe

‘These two ladies are told “You need to get to Tallahassee tomorrow”, the next day, but Jamie’s crazy ass is like “Oh, no. Here’s my map. Here are all the like lesbian things we need to do on our way down to Tallahassee”, so they get sidetracked.’🤣 And I love that Nick keeps referring to her as ‘little white Michelle Williams’ (to distinguish her from the singer) in several reviews. 🤣

I wonder if lesbians were involved in the production of this movie. She has hot drawers. You guys crack up. Today is my birthday. I'm so happy to consistently watch your reviews. Because you guys bring me constant joy with your humor and savage ways. As for this movie I'm disappointed that it has been receiving mixed to poor reviews. The trailer captured my interest and looked good.

It was co-written (and according to press interviews, co-directed as well) by Tricia Cooke, a lesbian. She just didn't get a directing credit due to DGA rules.

I have some alleged tea about the making of this movie. The woman who wrote this, Ethan's partner/wife, wrote this from her experiences. They are in an open relationship. So, she is the lesbian involved in writing tis movie. It was originally written in the mid 1990's and its only coming out now. It's original title was Drive Away D!k!s. I don't know that all that is true, but I have heard it from 2 reviewers who loved this movie....IDK, maybe I'll check it out. You are the best!

This felt like an snl spoof of Greg Araki movies from the 90s, except with none of the authenticity and rawness of those films and way too much confidence in its sense of humor. Beyond the accent, the lead protagonist is a complete creep who cheats on her gf who pays for everything and kicks her out so she immediately decides to make it her life mission to get her uptight friend loosen up (with her of course). She’s the stereotypical oversexed recruiter trope. Interesting that they had to add the scenes of the “love interest” childhood discovery of her attraction to girls, and a throwaway line about how she hasn’t slept with anyone since her last gf several years before. Without these lines of dialogue every behavior from the protagonist reads as a way pushy seducer trying to “turn” a gay virgin. How the gay community wouldn’t be mostly offended by these tired tropes by now is difficult to understand but looking at the box office they clearly are speaking with their wallet.

There's so much I could write, but I'm only going to say that this movie is not even 85 minutes yet it felt like an eternity. I was so bored and underwhelmed that I MYSELF started reading (finishing up Brothers Karamazov) during the movie (I sat in the back of the theatre and read on my phone on dark mode). I also googled during the movie to double-triple check that this was the same director as beloved Fargo, Big Lebowski. Unbelievable. This is what happens when you make a movie solely to impress someone in your life.
