Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt driver for movies by day and moonlights as a wheelman for criminals by night. Though a loner by nature, “Driver” can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. After a heist goes wrong, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). Soon he realizes the gangsters are after more than the bag of cash and is forced to shift gears and go on the offense.

This movie helped me understand introverts. Just because he is introverted doesn't mean he doesn't care. He may just take 210+ seconds to respond to an emotional expression. Some are slower than others.

Tbf, he is not your regular introvert. He is a borderline psychopath with a really specific disorder. There are VERY obvious issues going on there beneath that exterior.

@@Izaan2810 IDK why I see this "psychopath" interpretation of driver so much. You can tell throughout that he genuinely hates the situation he finds himself in and is just taking whatever measures absolutely necessary to extriccate himself from it. For instance, you can tell in the strip club scene that he is beyond terrified of what he's doing with the hammer and the bullet. He's scared and acts in very human and emotional ways if you watch closely enough. He never came across as a cold blooded psychopath to me at any time in the film.

@@BustAcApInCoD50 I might be wrong, I admit. You put forward a great argument. Maybe he is not a psychopath. However, there's something just really out of the ordinary about this guy's behavior. There are definitely some underlying mental issues going on that refrain him from acting normally. He is a bit TOO stoic, for me to consider him as a regular introvert. And the way he shows expertise at killing and acts instantly without any hesitation. He shows zero regards for his own life as well. Something really melancholic and somber that also suggests massive loss at some point in history that he no longer cares to find any purpose in his life until Irene and the boy came into his life. My point is that, he is not your regular introvert.

@@Izaan2810 Driver is certaintly an engima of a person. Shannon describes him to Irene as walking into his shop about 5 or 6 years ago "right outta the blue" asking for a job and showed a savant level of proficiency in mechanics. He also tells Bernie, when it comes to Driver's abilities at the wheel that he's "special" and that he's "never seen anything like it." I've seen interpretations that driver is deliberately acting as a movie archetype (cowboy, I would say) to express his masculinity and I think there is merit to that. He obviously has an affinity for film as he has pursued stunt driving and this can be seen as an extension of acting out his fantasies of being the archtypal hero. So his character is constantly "acting" and is detached from being a "real human being." You don't know the real driver at all really, but maybe at the end he has fulfilled his fantasy of being a hero considering the scenario he just lived through in reality and can now go on to live a more "real" life. Why did Driver have the impulse to live this life though? You can only speculate since he seemed to appear out of thin air one day about 5 or 6 years ago.

I believe Irene represents the river/water in the scorpion and the frog parable. She is typically calm, serene, and a source of peace and (emotional for Driver) sustinence. Due to external circumstances though, (the storm being Standard and the problems that come with him) she is a source of danger at the wrong place and the wrong time. She literally gives Driver water in this scene.
