It's SUCH A GOOD MOVIE! I saw it, almost by accident, in theatre. To this day best spontaneous movie decision ever. Than I watched it again recently and honestly, I remembered, it was fun, but I surely underestimated HOW good it is. And yeah, it's a bit of a dilemma. On one side, I wish they would make another one, I want more of this, like with Lethal Weapon. But on the other hand: Maybe it should just be this one movie and not become another franchise/universe.

The Nice Guys also had one of my all time favorite performances of a child character in Holly. She was so endearing, sincere and funny in the movie without feeling like an adult written into a child's body or a kid played by an adult. Angourie Rice also had fantastic chemistry with the two leads
@jacobsweet73279 ай бұрын
I think her role and the way she was written makes sense as well, her dad can't take care of himself, she drives him everywhere, cooks for him, reminds him of chores and events coming up. she had to mature a lot faster than kids her age. I always read her as a kid who thinks that because she stepped up like she did, she is an adult. Which I feel a lot of teenagers that age go through a similar phase in life. so her acting like an adult, and not really being phased by some of the adult things going on around her to me always made sense.

That's awesome that he mentioned Abbot & Costello, because at about 15min in to Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Lou sees the candle on the coffin move and "tries" to whistle for Abbot/Bud...a scene that Gosling mimicked when finding the dead body after taking his tumble over the party house balcony. A scene that I recognized instantly since I was (still am) a huge fan of the Abbott and Costello films growing up. Never seen anyone mention the similarities before, but hearing him say he was a fan, I know that it was an intentional homage to Lou Costello's comic genius. And gotta say, that arm break scream that Gosling does gets me every time! Brilliantly done, perfect! Thanks for reviewing this severely under-rated gem of a movie! It might be a long shot but maybe if all involved want a sequel, maybe just maybe it can happen! I sincerely hope so!

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys are two of the greatest comedies of the 21st century, and criminally underrated. So few people have heard of them, and yet everyone I've ever recommended them to has had nothing but positive feedback. The Nice Guys' commercial failure is one of the biggest tragedies in recent movie history. Re the Ian Fleming thing, they actually used the line as the basis for the best Bond theme that never was- Shirley Bassey's Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which was eventually replaced by Tom Jones' Thunderball (an instrumental arrangement can still be heard in the movie)

It becomes increasingly apparent that so many film makers in Hollywood have no idea about what is quality. There are endless remakes of superhero films and car chase films but that only caters to a niche population. In reality, the cinema-going audience could be more diverse if a wider range of films were commissioned but the studios won't take sufficient risks. Last year, post pandemic, there were a large number of films that tempted me to watch them at the cinema, in 2023 far fewer. The Nice Guys is a perfect gem. It appeals to all ages (I'm 66) and types of people. It has wit and heart and is not formulaic. As a period piece it is perfect.

Shane Black's "The Nice Guys" fits in as a highlight in a period L.A. slacker noir marathon with The Coen Bros' "Big Lebowski", Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", and PT Anderson's "Inherent Vice". For an even more acid noirish fun time, throw in Terry Gilliam's "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" and Oliver Stone's "U-Turn". Maybe even graduate to Tony Scott's "Domino", Joe Carnahan's "Smokin' Aces", and Michael Bay's "Pain & Gain" to top off a full weakend of gonzo crime farces.

I always think of Michael Cane in The Muppets Christmas Carol when it comes to actors who took a film outside of their norm, though I guess it isn't so much a shift in his style, since he played it as straight faced as if he were acting with humans. Bryan Cranston is another notable one, though obviously he made the opposite transition of hilarious and slapstick comedy to Walter White. This film was amazing though. I knew with the scene with Ryan Gosling slicing his arm open, that I was in for a really special comedy. As they say, comedy is very often misery for the main characters.

I love The Nice Guys! I sort of stumbled upon it by accident while looking for something to watch during the pandemic, and then mentally kicked myself for not having watched it sooner. It was superb comedy and had great chemistry between Gosling and Crowe that made their partnership entertaining to watch. That recommendation to set it in the 70s was a stroke of genius too, because it gave the story that needed level of seediness and gives the movie added stakes because all of the evidence is exclusively on physical copies, not digital or easily replicated. Other great dramatic actors that excelled in comedic roles are Robert DeNiro in Meet the Parents/Mett the Fockers, James Caan in Elf, and Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. Conversely, comedic actors like Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell, Adam Sandler, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jonah Hill and Brian Cranston turned in stellar performances in dramatic roles too.
