Rick Froberg was a friend of mine. His brother and I were just chatting yesterday about how unknown but influential he and John were. Not just Jehu, but Hot Snakes and Rocket From the Crypt. We're all pretty crushed at the moment, but seeing you pay respect while breaking down such a killer tune makes my soul a little less sad. Thanks Eric, much appreciated.

The beauty of Jehu is that the guitars are not just played, they are a conduits for expressing what flows through the minds of both players. You can tab out he guitars and someone could get close to approximating their sound, but 50% of it will always be in the soul of the finger tips of these guys. Watch any live Jehu show and see how Speedo plays like he is one with the instrument. He bends and contorts the shit out of his LP to express the kinetic energy and melodies in his brain.

So so so good dude. Rick's passing hit everyone who's ever loved his music so hard and this was a beautiful tribute. I'm hoping that the Hot Snakes record they were finishing right before Rick passed away sees the light of day one day, his and John's musical legacy should be celebrated far more than it is.

Can't believe I missed this when you posted it. Froberg and Reis were a huge influence on my playing and how I navigated splitting guitar parts (along with Moore/Ranaldo, Picciotto/MacKaye, Robbins/Barbot, and of course, Lloyd/Verlaine). I was fortunate to catch them twice with Hot Snakes and both times, the band's power brutalized me in the best way. Rick's death was a real gut-punch.

Echoing other people's sentiments, nothing sounds like Rick And John on guitars together. Especially crazy because as far as I recall Rick never even really thought he was a "guitar player." or at least not an adept one. Deeply saddened to hear about his passing but glad there are folks like Eric around to keep the spirit alive and delve into this stuff from a more technical perspective. It's not as if every guitar teacher on KZbin digs both Jehu, Aimee Mann and Ribot so thanks for making cool stuff, dude.

Q and Not U was the first band I ever saw live, at the Downtown in Farmingdale NY, probably around 2004? Q and Not U's guitar work is ripping and funky but it has a different kind of skronk than Drive Like Jehu, although I think Hooray For Humans is a lesson-worthy song. A lot of funk-style 'scratching' (16th notes with alternate picking). Q and Not U was criminally underrated, glad to hear them mentioned.

yank crime was one of the records that made me realise guitar was something i needed in my life and not just something for my uncles garage. that record, lonesome crowded west, and fittingly, marquee moon. i feel like they all make a kind of proposition about the guitar, like they show you its potential without feeling unattainable or distant like a lot of stuff from guitar ‘heroes’ (who r still great obvs). its cool youve covered 2 of the 3 on the channel, theyre a pretty deep well of inspiration to pull from. maybe tlcw is the less impressive of them but the opening of teeth like gods shoeshine is still as interesting and almost baffling to me as it was before i knew how to play the instrument. even though it should all be pretty simple on paper edit - somehow got caught up in the excitement of seeing DLJ talked abt and didnt register the news. seeya Rick. and thank you

Interestingly, the “third” you get with harmonics is not quite a major but also not a minor, which means you have three thirds going on.
@keithklassen5320
@keithklassen5320 Жыл бұрын
Weeeeeell, I'd say the thirds you can get in harmonics are very close to their major and minor brethren; I'd even say that they are recognizably major and minor, even if they're not exactly the same as the major and minor thirds in equal temperament. I'm kinda nitpicking here, because I agree with your main point, but I'd just word it differently.
