Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi actually talked about those changes from the source material in the press conference at Cannes. The car is not a yellow convertible like in the book because it would be impossible to record good location sound if the roof of the car was exposed. Also, the color was changed because he wanted the car to stand out more during a pivotal scene. He also wanted the protagonist to be in the rear seat during the earlier parts of the movie, but move up to the passenger seat as the film and his dynamic with the driver progresses, especially considering the film's story is much longer than the book.
