It annoys my opponents as it flusters many if they aren't consistently prepared with the stance or racquet misplaced. I sometimes stand back a bit to get a flatter faster trajectory.

I'm 56 and we were using this server in my youth. I believe it was called a shooting server then. At least when it was taught to me. Unless it's a variation of the shooting serve then I suppose you could call it new. Anyway, not an important point. Though I think you are both doing a great job. I particularly appreciate the drills you publish. Thanks keep it up.

I was going to say that in the 2001 All England MS Final, I remember Chen Hong getting faulted twice on his forehand drive serve. I also remember Cai Yun using a more conventional backhand drive serve. What was clever about Cai Yun's drive serve was that he got up on his tip toes before serving, making his waist higher up, and allowing for a flatter drive crossover.

@BadmintonInsight

Yes it is!!
@kimyeap1124
@kimyeap1124 3 жыл бұрын
I don't see how it is advantageous to short or tall players. Unless someone can enlighten me. Greg? Jenny? With the new rule everyone serves from the same height giving the same flattest angle possible. Unlike the old rules it replaced which distinctly favours taller players whose last rib or earlier rule of waist height is higher than shorter players, though negligible in my opinion unless you are a foot taller than the average Joe. What the new rule does negate is the guess work that service judges used to have to make in deciding where the rib or waist of each player is. Going by the waistline of a players shorts or skirt is not reliable as we all wear our clothes differently and if the top is not tucked in, then good luck guessing. And since I'm feeling uncharitable. When service judges used to put up a board, only he can see if someone actually faulted. Whether his board was actually parallel to the floor or aimed at the right spot who can tell? And I suspect, and one or two service judges comes to mind, those who likes to call a fault at least once at critical points in each game. I often wondered if they did that so that the camera gives them their 5 seconds of fame and having their names mentioned. Among the hundreds of officials I recall only one or two with such tendencies. So the new rule may hopefully keep the attention on the players and seriously minimise officials having any bearing on any games.

@@kimyeap1124 I'm thinking if I'm a very short player then 1.15m I may be serving close to chest level while if I'm a very tall player 1.15m I will be serving closer to my waist level. Looks like I need to bring a measuring tape to the badminton court next time I play to check out how this affects my serve!

@@kimyeap1124 A drive serve is much easier when you can serve above waist at 1,15; it was virtually impossible for small player before the rule change since theri waist was perhaps at 1m without commiting a foul.

In what significant way does it favour short players? The service height remains the same for all players. Therefore, the flattest angle would remain the same. Got to stick up for us shorties. The most obvious advantage for shorties is being able to play the flat game with more comfort not having to bend the knee as much. I suppose the serve will be a disadvantage to Peter Crouch height players who will have to serve on their knees.

To the receiver it looks like it was illegal (service fault - too high) and I suspect, in the amateur game at least, the suspicion is well-founded 😉 To achieve that trajectory from below the waist (or even 1.15m) when the net is 1.55m is tricky and it happens so fast, who can really spot a fault?
