The author of this book won the Nobel Prize, not the book itself. People win Nobel Prizes for their body of work, not for individual pieces of work. I don’t believe this book has won any specific awards.

Regarding great translated fiction , I'd recommend My Name Is Red and Snow by another Nobel Prize winning author, Orhan Pamuk. Also The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco is a really good book.

Thanks for the recommendations! I've heard of The Name of the Rose, even remember the movie. I'll look into both.

While I'm not much of a poetry guy myself, I do love the works of William Blake. I am now considering picking up this book from your review. Great video as always Jason!

Glad you're willing to check it out. I think with a stronger plot, this could have been a cool book. Honestly, it felt like it was written by someone who had a good understanding of character, but not a good understanding of structure. Not that you have to adhere to any particular structure, but structure is a thing because it's tried and true. That's why I only try to break it if it's for a good reason.

This was a DNF for me. I applaud you for sticking with it thru the pointless meandering.

Haha I hear you. It was meandering. I have no problem quitting books, but I stuck with this for some reason.

We talked about this book during nano! Good review. I'll have to check it out. Nobel prize is a strong selling point, for sure.

Great discussion of a very unique book. I really appreciated this book though the astrology bits were a bit too tedious for me. If you like historical fiction and don't mind massive tomes, I'd recommend The Books of Jacob by the same author.

Thanks! Yeah it was hit and miss. Some good stuff for sure but a little meandering. I will look into your recommendation

I disagree, I did find the translation of Cixin Liu very good. The story was great. Murakami's book After Dark is not among my favorites of his catalogue.

I might have to revisit it. I was excited upon release, but that was years ago. Maybe my tempered expectations will help
