This is probably the best car video ever made. Not just because of the amazing car, but because of the driver. I am from Germany and have been saying 100% the exact same thing as him for years. Drivers in the U.S are super uneducated about how driving works. Each one seems to think the own the road. Only here is it ok to go 20 MPH under the already ridiculously slow seed limit in the far left lane on the interstate. When I was in Germany just a few months back I too was saddened to see all the construction work, but at the same time, the Germans are serious about their roads and want only the best, unlike here in the U.S where 4 foot deep potholes are acceptable on interstates where people attempt to do 70+ MPH. There is truly nothing like the German roadway system to include the famous Autobahn. There is a reason why the world's best drives come from Germany.

I agree with you 100% I have had the pleasure of driving on the autobahn... It was like I saw the code to the Matrix. Great experience would have been better in a sports car. Flashing your lights in the states is like asking someone to go into complete road rage I hate it.

I´m a German that has never been to the U.S.A. before. It boggles my mind that the host here could be right about how vast the difference between US and German driver purportedly is. When looking at the comments and seeing that notion repeated by many Americans, I still can´t really believe it. As I live in the Ruhrgebiet, the fastest I can ever go in my daily drives is about 100 mph. And that´s on a good day. But finding a long, empty and unrestricted piece of road on an overnight long haul is a great pleasure every time, and I´m very glad the Autobahn remains unrestricted as of now. The Green Party wanted to implement a speed limit of 80 mph years ago, but somehow, preventing the castration of the Autobahn is something that unites all Germans - thus that notion was off the table VERY quickly.

I am an American that has lived in Germany for the past seven years. I can tell you that the Autobahn is more legend than reality. Between construction and congestion it is really rare to get to drive truly fast. Sometimes in the wee hours of the morning you can find some speed. But mostly in the day to day, it's just packed. Plus, as was mentioned in the video, drivers from other countries often screw it up with their application of lane "courtesy"

I've never driven in Europe but the biggest complaint I have against American drivers in general is that they almost never leave the passing lane to make way for a faster approaching car. Even when I'm going 15 mph over the speed limit in the passing lane I will merge into right lane to let a faster car go by.

I know exactly what you mean about Germany. I just drove from southern Italy to the Nurburgring and now down in Italy. The etiquette of German drivers is top notch. If I come up on a car at high speeds, they simply move over. No flashing or tailing required. That does not happen much in the states.

I'm a canadian who has lived in and has been driving in New Zealand and Finland. I dread the day I have to drive again in Canada. Roads, road infrastructure and simply they way they are made are much better in NZ and Finland. I've sure Germany is the same. The most enjoyable European driving for me was Naples traffic - in town, around the hills, on the Autostrada! The whole experience was one of 'track position', controlling the apex, out-braking manuevers, and speed. Hand signals, car-to-car smiles, a friendly competitive etiquette, and yes, we Italians respected the fast lane - But, that may have just been between Italian brand cars! Thank God we were in an Alfa. !!

we had more americans for many years in Germany than belgian people ;) It was called cold war and they here with the US Army. You easy could id them with their US licens plates. It was the good old days for me... a hord of young US soldiers on party tour through town was way more relaxed than the today groups of wanna bee russian and turk gangster kids with thier shit language who think they are the coolest chief gangster in town. In the good old days the US soldiers regulary smacked them up if they tryed to hard to be cooler than they are and if 20 turks tryed to make trouble they always outnumbered them within minutes. Randy Schouteere , I would agree with you, I don't feel amused too for stating that Belgians don't know how to respectfully drive. I would state that Flemish people don't know how to properly do that (generally, not all of them of course). I lived 25 years around Brussel & Leuven, moved to Vielsalm, the Ardennes. 24 km from the German border, 17 km from the Luxembourg border. If I have to go to Brussels, it's ok to drive ... untill you pass the Flemish Brabant border ... then nobody respects the right lane driving rule anymore, most of them just stick to the middle, and between Tienen & Brussels it's the worst. This associal behavior is something you don't see that much (almost not) on the highways of the French part of Belgium, more specifically, the Ardennes. I've driven +25K km in Germany & Luxembourg last year, 15K in the Ardennes & 10K in the Flemish part of Belgium, 4K in France, 3K in Spain. Luxembourg has even better drivers then Germany. Flemish come last, Ardennes & Germans are pretty close ... Spain & France, on the countryroads had most respect for motorcycles (they let you through without you asking).

Took me a month of special course that taught mechanical aspects of the car, and driving techniques and insane tests to get my license. It was 3 hours, everyday for a month, 10 years ago in Europe. Took me 10 questions and parallel parking in us to get my license. I saw 12 people in front of me failed their tests, 7 others that couldn't parallel park. BTW in Europe it was all manual restricted, no automatics. I apologize if this offends anyone but its a matter of fact.

I am German, and yes nowadays it is almost impossible to reach the top speeds on a sports saloon like the RS7 during the day. The last time I was able to drive for a longer period of time maximum speed was on a weekday after 10 PM. The "flow" speed that is mentioned in the video is about ~150km/h (~90 MPH) during the day. Otherwise you have to brake to often just because there are cars slower or a truck is passing another truck (we call that an elephant race).

Just a couple of points: 1) It's a sort-of a hatch version of a saloon (the A6) so it definitely isn't a saloon it's self 2) Germany is a country so has cities and countryside unlike LA which is just a city so bit of an unfair comparison 3) More lane discipline is needed when you have fewer lanes and you're only able to overtake on one side. Makes a great noise though!

In my previous job I drove a lot in Germany on business, and the fact is that German drivers are one of the most educated, skilled and rule-obeying drivers drivers in the world. Of course in many places of Germany, there are still no limits on speed, however, the amount of traffic and construction work is making it almost impossible to drive at speeds above 120 miles for extended periods of time.

It is. Driving fast in traffic like that takes real concentration for prolonged time (unless you have a deathwish obviously, then you just hold down the pedal and speed along happily). It's not physically exhausting, but mentally you are constantly on the edge. It's the same kind of exhaustion you might feel during a long exam.

I lived in Saal an Der Saale and drove to Schweinfurt everyday for 3 years. No traffic. 150mph average daily in either my 530D, Subaru Legacy GTB E-tune, or 93 RX7. Germany... probably one of the best countries to live.

I think a lot of the blame can be placed on the lack of rules or driver education. In Germany you are not allowed to hog the left lane, but have to switch lanes if you can continue to drive at your current speed for 20 seconds on the right hand side. Also, part of getting a driver's licence in Germany requires you to take at least 4 hours training on the Autobahn to learn its rules and flow. Now, not everyone adheres to these rules. But when people do it's an incredibly fluid driving experience.

BTW, if you want to go fast, go to Italy. The Autostrada is just amazing. I went from Turin to Monaco, and while the tolls are stupidly expensive, it's not that crowded and the road service is second to that in Dubai. Plus, the Italian cops let you get away with anything if you're in a nice Italian car.

I think the drivers definitely play a big role in this. Every time i see a video from american highways people drive in what ever lane they want. In Germany we have the "Rechtsfahrgebot" which means you always have to drive as much on the right side lane as possible.

As a German i can tell you it actually does... but only because it is in such bad condition in some parts! The tarmac is like 30-40 years old and we even had accidents because of the tarmac braking as a result of the heat. But apart from that you're right, driving on the Autobahn actually isn't what should be called challenging - says me, just having passed my driving license :P

Autobahn is so crowded nowadays that when I was going between Netherlands and Poland I was actually rising my avg. speed on Polish highways. I know that this sounds quite new for you, but Poland has developed a lot in last 5 years, there are lots of new roads. There just a few speed cams marked with a sign 500m earlier, so if you don't see any Police car you can really floor it. Many of Autobahns aren't smooth, because they were build by Hilter and you have the same type of speed cams as in UK.

FDR Drive starting from Brooklyn at the end of the Brooklyn Bridge finishing in Harlem's 125th st is NY's autobahn. The ultimate educational driving tool. From weaving in and out of traffic like a boxer, til' doing over 100mph on 3 lanes through a series of winding pavements. On the perfect conditions, the chance of getting to use all the gears and also being aware and cautious of other drivers(and cops) around you is challenging and exciting, at the same time making you become a better driver.

I agree with the statement of Germans respecting the driving laws. There are about 3x more signs and laws that you have to learn compared to that in America to past your test. The German drivers test is no joke. If you're a German citizen, you do not begin your drivers education until your 18, whereas in America its 15 and 9 months. and that's why German have 9ff GT9-r, G Power etc... able to max out 382-431km/h on autobanh. Very true, the faster you go, smoother the traffic is. Smoother the traffic is, less car beside you which means "clear for take off" and actually safer and make the trip far shorter! Imagine, when America increase speed limits to 200 or 300km/h, the max speed of average cars will reach a higher level, lets say 200km/h and the top speed of supercars like Bugatti, Nissan, Porsche, McLaren will rise for sure that'll also grow the technology. This is a very good review! We should ignore those "mommy" logic or silly logic such as slower is safer blah blah blah...

The video isn't confusing at all. It's not a car review neither is it a look at congestion/driver mentality. It's a video of an "Audi RS7, Flat Out on the Autobahn". And it showed it pretty well, I liked it a lot.

So question for you, I do know from my brief stint in Germany that you are supposed to pass only in the left lane and let faster drivers go by. Do you think that he was traveling in the middle lane, and approaching a slower car- then decided to switch back to the left?

What a great job JF!! And thanks so much for making a point that driving at 65mph on any lane you damn want just doesn't make safer roads, less traffic or anything good at all. I don't know if autobahns are the solution (lots of people die on german highways every year) but for sure they breed the best drivers in the world. American highway driving is just very very frustrating.

If you were driving from the west side of Germany to Munich, that means you probably took the A8 which is notorious for congestion and regular traffic jams due to the ongoing construction work (Seriously, they have been building for like 8 years), so not exactly the best stretch for a speed run. There are many stretches of Autobahn where, very early in the morning, you can really open up and not endanger anyone else on the road.

If you want to do a speed run your best bet is at night on less popular Autobahns. My number one was the A63 between Kaiserlautern and Frankfurt after 1am, it also helped some of the less powerful rentals like 320i, 520i, C180 kompressor, E200 Kompressor hit top speed with some nice downhills over bridges across valleys above little villages often we hit between 245 and 260 km/h. My personal best was 270km/h in a VW Phaeton 4.2. God I miss Germany and the Autobahn I knew from aug '03 to jan '06.
