@stephan50265 жыл бұрын
I’d suggest a different list/order of first upgrades depending on where you live/wheel. Wheeling in the woods is a lot different then wheeling in Moab. 1) Safety first - recovery equipment/med kit/ fire extinguisher. 2) Lift/Tires 3) Bumpers (where else u gonna mount your big spare?) 4) Winch 5) Gears/Lockers And if you’re a city crawler then you need: 1) Cheapest tallest lift you can find on the smallest axels. 2) 24”+ rims with low profile tires. 3) a high-lift jack mounted on the hood. 4) lots of lights - point them everywhere! 5) shiny exhaust tip bra! 😁😁
@1stcSOLDIER4 жыл бұрын
Low profile tires are gay on imports and unthinkable on a Jeep. That kind of stuff gets tires slashed here..

Armor with 2" receivers. 5. Siped mudders. 31x10.5s or similarly-narrow 33s can fit TJs/LJs without a suspension lift. Trxus MTs and Duratracs used to be somewhat affordable. 6. External racks. 7. Sway bar disconnect. Cheap, easy, and allows a better ride without upgrading suspension
@Justin-ou1uw3 жыл бұрын
Can you explain this a little bit?
@Andrew-dg7qm3 жыл бұрын
Sure. Rough country sells an inexpensive kit. You can install if you’re handy it get a mechanic to do it for nominal cost. Works with stock shocks or 2 1/2” lift (which you might consider if your shocks have faded and sagged…likely for a car this old). It’s a manual sway disconnect setup but works well if you carry a small sledge to get the Lynch pins back in once you’re finished on the trail Stock TJ ride isn’t great, and budget replacement suspension (RC or similar) won’t be an improvement so you’ll want to rely on the sway bar disconnects to improve front end articulation when you’re wheeling. Made all the difference, and just used ‘em last weekend. Totally worth it
@Jeeptalkshow5 жыл бұрын
1. Tow points, front and rear. 2. Skids, especially rock sliders. 3. Winch bumper and winch. 4. Lift. 5. Slip Yoke Eliminator for your NP231. 4 and 5 should be done together.

I learned from an off road recovery tow company that a simple come along hand operated winch is the best piece of equipment to have when off roading.

Good vid! I actually enjoy a lot of your content!!! I just bought my first jeep recently (98 TJ) and LOVE IT. It did come with some things done like a small lift, stroker motor, and a slip yoke eliminator, but it was still rolling on stock axles, open diffs, and 31" street tires. To be quite honest, those Michelins surprised the hell out of me, which is why I would honestly say that a portable compressor would be in my top 5 first mods. The ability to air down tires, no matter what kind, will give you heaps of grip. Of course, I did end up getting a set of 33" MTs but they weren't ABSOLUTELY necessary. I agree with a winch 100%. I didn't get one right away, but I did buy a come-along and some straps the day I got the jeep. Good thing, too, since I got stuck in a mud hole THE FIRST NIGHT!!! Having a winch is like having a front locker, only cheaper (and useful in MANY other ways). Last but not least, I would recommend a sway bar disconnect kit!!!!! Hopefully someone found these tips handy!!!

I guess it depends on how you use it. I use mine to make a living recovering people on the beach, on the roads, and in the woods. I have a 13k winch and bumper for obvious reasons. A cheap amazon bumper and $300 winch. A couple thousand cycles and still going. From motorhomes to high lift equipment. I have a tube skeleton with roof rack to carry equipment as well as junk left behind on the beach. Obviously I have a hitch front and rear. Also have a second winch on a receiver plate for the back, Second battery in the back. 31x10.50 Goodyear tires. A little bigger, but don't require a lift. Lift doesn't serve a purpose. A few extra lights for night recovery rounds out the list. I did put in a cheap $30 stereo simply for the USB charging port. It won't play anything, but it charges great. Player after a week. Including the tires, I have less than $2000 in mods.

Besides normal equipment like a shovel, booster cables and snow chains; for a real Jeep that’s stock (not the plastic ones) the best modifications furthering the Jeep’s already good off road ability could be listed: ~ M/t tires plus spare (235 or 33” is fine unless you plan to rock crawl) $400-700 ~ Hilift jack 48” all cast (keep inside not out, it is iron after all) $120-140 ~ Recovery straps x2 (3300 working lb rating/10000lb max load rating or greater) $15-25 each ~ Strong, reliable battery $120-150 ~ Winch (8-12k lb is sufficient) $800-1200 (Prices are approximate and in Canadian dollars) Useful extras could be: ~ Part time locking differential (front > rear) or posi ~ Suspension lift 1-6”

It also makes it easier to access drain plugs and make sure rust doesn’t catch up on you and super easy to clean. I had a 98 Cherokee where the floors were getting a little squishy. Your list is so wrong. Here's what's effective and cheap: 1. Bigger tires, 31" BFG ATKOS on stock rims so you have lots of sidewall flex for airing down. Any bigger and you run in to major diff ratio mods, drivetrain and and suspension problems. 2. Undercarriage armor, gas tank and oil pan skid plates. My rock crawler buddies say you can drag a TJ over any obstacle as long as it's well armored. 3. Swaybar disconnects, a 1-2" puck spacer spring lift to reduce tire rubbing. Any more of a lift will involve major suspension modifications. 4. Auto tranny cooler with a deep pan so you don't experience the OMG 40° hill climb ATF ventilation problem where the tranny fails and you're gonna go backwards. I'm a desert guy and a tranny cooler is a must. Here's how to waste money: 1. Heavy aftermarket bumpers. The stock bumpers are designed to crumple and protect the frame. 2. A winch. The electrical demands are enormous and weight on the front makes the rig less nimble. My crawler buddies say the best winch you can use is on somebody else's rig. 3. Lockers. They double the load on axles so surprise bangs are likely unless you spend thousands to upgrade. Open diffs with an LSD on the rear is a mild way to get slightly better crawl capabilities. 4. An insane thing is roof racks which put weight up high and destabilize the rig. So anyway keep a stock TJ in factory condition with minor mods that don't add much weight is the way to go.
