That is hilarious. Literally had to wait for a traffic jam on the freeway before he can use the system. Can’t use it on any other roads…Can’t use it at night…can’t use it when it’s raining… Can’t use it if there’s no cars in front of you and can’t use it over 40 miles an hour. Tesla is leve 2, and is full of investigation for problems and accidents and is not able to be used without a continuis control of human, and is not programmed for easy and an expected event (like a truck with traffic lights on top) that brings the car compeltely in tilt. So that is not autopilot, not a real one. Then you can push the limits of the technology but in this way you are risking you life and the one of everyone else. In this sense, the basic 2-level automatic control works better. One standard trip I have is approx. 500 kilometers. At level 2, the car steers, adjusts the speed and keeps the distance constant for more than 90% of the driving distance. There is so little other traffic in many places in Finland that Mercedes' level 3 system would actually be a deterioration of the current situation.

Most people don't understand that this system is offered in addition to the normal Level 2 system, which Mercedes of course also offers, without the strict limitations. These strict limitations are necessary because it must be guaranteed that malfunctions are statistically almost impossible. It just shows how difficult it is to make a system so reliable that one is also prepared to accept liability for it. This also includes covering scenarios that are extremely rare, e.g. a chain of errors with sensor failure, etc. All it takes is one scenario where the manufacturer cannot guarantee that the system will respond correctly to drop down to Level 2. The system would also probably work in rain and at night or at higher speeds, most of the time, just like their Level 2 system, but 99.9% is just not enough if you are responsible, it has to be 99.9999%. All the comparisons with other manufacturers, whose systems can supposedly do everything, are simply wrong, because they can't guarantee anything, not even at low speeds. And this subtle difference is actually quite a big one.

Bu then, what's the point in using this joke system over basic adaptive cruise control? If it can disengage at any moment if one of those 50 requirements are not met, then you still have to be ready to take over at any moment. So what's the point?
@lubder
@lubder Жыл бұрын
@@Zripas No the system can't disengage at any moment, that's the point and difference compared to other systems, which in the worst case, do not even recognize that there is a problem or just shut down immediately, whether you are ready or not. As long as the L3 system is active, you can read a book or watch a video. Then Mercedes is liable and responsible, not you. If the conditions are no longer met, then the driver has at least 10sec to take over, the system doesn't just shut down. Mercedes must guarantee that every situation, no matter how unlikely, is reliably detected. Imagine someone suddenly standing in front of the car in a traffic jam, for whatever reason. Now it may be that a level 2 system reliably detects and brakes thousands of times, but the one time the sun is blinding or a sensor is disturbed and the system would simply run over him. Just one example of countless that are conceivable and must be taken into account. The level 3 system must guarantee that this is practically impossible, for which it has various sensors and redundancies. If it happens anyway, it's Mercedes' fault, if you blindly rely on a level 2 system and run someone over, it's your fault and responsibility.
@Zripas
@Zripas Жыл бұрын
@@lubder It can disengage... it will warn you few seconds before, you you will have to take over because it will disengage. Just like Tesla FSD does, just like any autonomous feature, it will warn you about iminent disangament and you have to take over as soon as possible. Difference with something like Tesla system is that it will actually try to pull over to the side of the read if you fail to engage with that system, while this mercedes joke system will simply stop you in the middle of the road... I can only imagine how this joke system would attempt to handle accident or any unusual situation... Tho it does only work under 40m/h, on highway, during day time, no rain or snow or falling leaves, not in a tunnel, with car in front... At this point Mercedes will come out with 1m/h Level 5 autonomous car and call a day... it's a joke system... They just wanted that "We did it first" badge they could claim to have... Nothing more. "The level 3 system must guarantee that this is practically impossible" But its not... There are no such requirements for any system to be labeled as level 3... You only need autonomous car, aka car which can control steering, acceleration, braking, lane keeping, avoid collisions in front. Basically that's it... Same thing as any adaptive cruise control does, difference is that in this case you have car manufacturer who takes liability for any damages if something goes wrong, this is why it has like 50 different limitations put on it... Because its a bad system and no one should trust it, because manufacturer doesn't trust it... Mercedes joke system is just that, a joke, call it level 5 if you wish, it's still a joke.

But there's probably only a handful of these cars on the road (Google says they sold at least 65 compared to 900k Teslas with FSD) and like 5% of the time it even meets the conditions for use. That shows you it has not been truly tested in real world conditions. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of thousands of FSD Teslas on the road with real life data. They love to mention that one person killed by a Tesla, walking their bike in fast lane in the dark. How is this a Level 3 system if it cant take you from point A to point B? This is basically a level 1 more or less 🤣🤣🤣. It can only follow a car ahead of it on a highway. It cant drive itself in local streets. Tesla FSD beta ( a level 2) is already capable of driving in local streets. I'm confused as why this is called a Level 3 system.

This is embarrassing Edmunds and Mercedes. For Drive Pilot to work, you can only drive on a highway with traffic, you cannot drive beyond 40 mph, the road must be clearly marked, the weather must be perfect, and it only works in daylight. TESLA FSD 12.3.4 which have NONE of these ridiculous these conditions. You can drive it anywhere (highway, local, and backroad), anytime, in any conditions. All Testa vehicles 2017 and present can do this pretty flawlessly and you can purchase the Model Y with FSD included (3 month free trail, $99/month or $8K outright purchase) for less than $40K brand new!

Since this car has level 2 and dumbed down level 3 - it’s better to invoke level 2 for all situations rather than watch few seconds of movie. Surely it gives a preview and set expectations on what can be unlocked with level 3. Knowing merc - their developers will take 3-4 years to roll out something measurable. Also Tesla fanboys don’t realize that fallback to level 2 on Mercedes is not bad (though can’t hold a candle to FSD). FSD is also a Tesla jargon. I use Openpilot on ford explorer and I choose to stay humble.

I think it was an important step, not only for Mercedes, but for the hole industry, to bring this traffic pilot to market. We now see BMW also introducing a similar system. People read about Tesla's self driving cars, but don't even grasp the amount of regulation for automotive companies in the background to fullfill. Taking over liability, also finding insurance companies to back car companies up, must be a massiv step. Looking forward to see increased speeds with this system and some limitations lifted e.g. "following a car in front".
@Zripas
@Zripas Жыл бұрын
Speed might be increased, but lead car... Not really... Mercedes is scared of their system not performing well and doing stupid stuff, so having lead car makes it exponentially more safer as its basically does what lead car does, which in most cases being driven by real human, which means that chance for accident is extremely small. Its glorified adaptive cruise control with stop/start function which existed for years by now with allot less limitations. This isn't even step forwards, its step back, mercedes just wanted to be first with their "L3" system on the roads to have that right to claim to be the first ones who did it, independent how bad it was.

@@Zripas please tell us, which car company is accepting a 10 sec fall back time frame with full liability in a level 2 system? All level 2 systems have a 1 sec fall back time frame or less. It's a huge step forward. It's a credible and trustworthy first Level 3 product, which btw is a lot cheaper compared to other companies promisses.

@@hankmoody7521 10 sec fall back? In which imaginary world do you live in? Accidents happen quicker than 10 seconds... That 10 seconds thing only says that car will keep control for next 10 seconds when something happens what it can't handle... Wow... What happens after that? Car catches on fire? Stops control and just crashes? Going back to reality check, we can go with Tesla system which in case you stop interacting with car to indicate that you still aware, it will start slowing down and will try to ACTUALLY park your car on right side of the road and will turn on hazard lights. In comparison to Mercedes joke system, well, it will stop in a middle of road... On highway... Lets see how well will that end up to you... ● It operates only on geofenced, precision mapped, limited access highways ● It operates only at speeds of 40 MPH and below ● It operates only in the same lane-no lane changes ● It operates only with a lead vehicle within 100 meters ahead ● It operates only in clear weather-no rain or snow ● It operates only with no direct sun on the cameras ● It operates only if the driver doesn’t avert his gaze from ahead for more than five seconds ● It operates only outside of tunnels ● It operates only with an internet connection Tell me how is this step forwards from any generic adaptive cruise control with stop/start feature we had for years in quite few cars...

Let me get this straight, You have to pay to upgrade the vehicle to level 3 sensors. Then you have to pay an annual fee to keep it going, even though the circumstances have to be perfect for it to work . I think Mercedes got this one wrong. I have been driving Mercedes Benz since I was basically legal to drive. Used one at first, then New ones. I think enough is enough. Car companies continue to find news way to get more and more money away from us. Not all of us are rich. The majority of us work hard for our money, and just want to drive a nice quality vehicle without the hustle. I'm disappointed at Mercedes Benz.

Difference between L2 and L3 systems is basically who is liable for the damages if accident happens. Tesla auto pilot or enhanced auto pilot performs miles better than this joke Mercedes system, but Tesla simply doesn't want to deal with those possible lawsuits so its being labeled as L2. Mercedes just tries to be the "first" with L3 by paying out few millions in damage, which is cheaper than actually investing in advertisement.

People are mocking this because it doesn't match their driving situation, but i can say that driving in LA or Bay Area traffic, where this is available, is a huge benefit. You experience sub-40mph traffic on a daily basis. And clearly, this will only get better with time. Regardless, this system is infinitely better than anything Tesla or others could offer. I had FSD, and it was incredibly good and dangerously bad at the same time. FSD owners will highlight how great the system is while ignoring the dozens of times it decided to slam on the brakes or steer them towards an onramp at 70 mph.

I thought Mercedes was 1 of the most advanced with self driving technology; this system looks terrible. My 21 Genesis G80 highway driving assist is 50x better than this level 3 system. It works great with traffic, no traffic, night/day, & hugs curves at 65 mph. It does have trouble in the rain since it can't really see the lines on the road, but other than that, it's great. My commute to work is between 35 - 55 minutes depending on traffic & I would say it does about 80% of the driving for me. Saying Mercedes was the 1st to levels 1, 2, & 3 doesn't really mean anything when comparing it to other softwares out there seeing what all level 3 is incapable of. Not sure what metrics Mercedes is using to rate their software, but if level 3 is their latest upgrade, they have a long road ahead of them to try & catch up to the competition.

To me this is just adaptive cruise, nothing more. Try Tesla FSD, it's amazing, point to point navigation in all conditions including dirt roads. It's not certified yet but will be and will blow away the Mercedes system. This is just advertisement hype. This is not "Autonomous Driving". So stop using that term for adaptive cruise. You guys have stooped to new lows with this one for not calling it out for what it really is. A bad adaptive cruise system.
