Yes the pressure tank holds the air pressure for the brakes and airbags for the rear axle. There is a air compressor on the engine that builds the air pressure in the tank.
@jwalster9412 Жыл бұрын
So does that explain why the rear axle was all wanko, or does the T52 not use bags?
@Madanbek_The_Dragon_Lover Жыл бұрын
I can confirm that it was necessary for truck brakes, because recently I played with one scenario which involves that truck, and while engine was shut off, I could still hear some sounds after I release brakes and there was one gauge inside the truck showing that something was increasing while holding brakes (I forget the text inside that gauge tho), while the engine wasn't started.
@TracyTsVideos11 ай бұрын
@@jwalster9412in real life, it takes air pressure to release parking breaks. There are large springs that have to be compressed by the air to release the parking break. It then still takes air to apply the service breaks per application. If air pressure gets too low, the spring pressure overrides the air pressure and applies the parking break as a safety measure. I am not sure how accurately the game copies the breaking details of real world trucks.

Nah the game didnt know what was happening ,what happened was that the radiator came of the truck ,without getting damaged , which is why he didn't get the warning for a damaged radiator. If you look back at the footage ,the engine was slowly getting to the point of overheating ,this is because the game is still registering that the radiator wasnt there so the truck was slowly overheating. I don't know why the radiator being ripped out of its mounting points and hoses isn't classed as being broken in the game.

With the T-Serues and that broken air tank- they use air pressure in the brake system instead of the usual hydraulics. As long as it wasn't a big leak, the air compresser (usually gear-driven and part of the engine block) would be able to keep up with it to keep the brakes working. When air pressure gets low (usually between 15-30 psi), the brakes automatically lock against the wheels- they're naturally held against the brake drums with springs, and the air in the system pushes them away allowing the wheels to rotate. This works as a safety feature for trucks and trailers- no air means the wheels will lock, so if the airline to a trailer broke or if there was no air in the system, instead of not having any brakes, all affected brakes would just lock up If the brakes were warmed up enough, you might have been able to still accelerate- most truck engines put out enough torque to move the truck forward even if the brake shoes are pressed agaist the drum-, but it would have made carrying speed much harder

I was wondering why the brakes were so twitchy driving the T series, its probably because I was driving with low rpms.

The pressure tank of the T-Series is for the air brakes. Trucks use air brakes which are disengaged when air pressure is present, and brake when pressure is absent. Rupturing the pressure tank might cause you to loose brake pressure slowly until the brakes just lock up. It may however be possible that small leaks don’t ever cause this to happen, as pressure is built up while the engine is running (in fact I know this from IRL) (not sure though how it’s modeled in game). You can see this effect though immediately if you rip off the whole air tank; the brakes will fully lock up permanently.
@nerfgodbigguy1405 Жыл бұрын
Some of the older D-series ,like the cab over only have rear brakes and the pressure tanks are located underneath the chassis next to the wheels ,it has a limited amount of air inside it ,it doesn't run on the pressurisation of the engine. The D-series that fail is using has the pressure tanks underneath the cabin/cockpit because it uses a pressurisation system with the engine (hence the location and why it probably didn't lock up the engine) , it depends on how badly damaged the pressure tanks have received as beam simulates that. The D-series long nose was made later with the new pressure system in the 'lore' of beam, where as the cab over is a older variant.
@rccookie6202 Жыл бұрын
@@nerfgodbigguy1405 So you mean the pressure does not increase by running the engine? That makes no sense, you would eventually run out of air pressure (the more you brake, the quicker) and the brakes would lock up forever.
@nerfgodbigguy1405 Жыл бұрын
@@rccookie6202 basically in the game ,on the truck, there's a air compressor located near the engine to compress air , this air is then sent to the air/pressure tanks for the brakes to be used when braking. Now here's the thing , there's a governor connected to the air compressor, the governor governs the flow of air to the tanks , the governor stops the flow of air to the tanks when the tanks are full at a safe level, when the driver depresses the brake some of the air is used so the governor allows more air to flow to the tanks , in the game the governor stops the air flow when the gauge reaches 120-140 psi (you can see the gauge on the inside of the cabin of the T-series) since the air compressor cant turn itself off when the engine is running ,its still makes air and when the pressure tanks are full all it can do is dump the air into the atmosphere, you hear a 'psstt' sound when that happens. This is all simulated in the game and yes the beamng devs when into such detail. Also if the air pressure in the tanks drops too low at around 60psi ,the system in the truck will warn the driver with a warning light and a very loud buzzer. The air pressure was probably fluctuating alot during the challenge ,keep in mind it might have been a small leak or a big leak ,either way ,failrace was revving the hell out of the engine the whole time so im sure the air compressor had no problem providing the amount of air the tanks needed for the brakes to operate. To answer your question ,I was talking about what different variant of the trucks have as there system ,the long nose like the one failrace was driving has the system I was talking about in this comment, the older variant is a cab-over and it has a permanent pressure unit located near the wheels ,it's a older variant of the T-series so it's less advanced.

Strangely I don't play much Beam, but I've played a ton of American Truck Simulator. The pressure tank is indeed used for the braking system as many a times I've been forced to stop, usually by lights or a lane closure of some kind, drive a very short distance forward only to stop again, drive more, stop, drive, stop and so on. Eventually this can result in low pressure in the tank making the brakes ineffective. In ATS, this will prevent you from driving your cab forward any further until the pressure has risen to an acceptable level to drive off. This can be anything up to around 1 to 2 minutes of just siting idling while the compressor builds up the pressure again.

So the pressure tank might be referencing the air brake reservoir. Air pressure is used to release the brakes. The air pump refills the tank as air pressure is used and released to atmosphere to release the brakes. The pressure tank leak would lead to the brakes being engaged if there is not enough pressure available to release them. So, you were basically riding the brakes, which was probably why the clutch started overheating due to the increased drag on the drivetrain.

@@agenty_gd whats overdrive mean?
@agenty_gd Жыл бұрын
@@squidwardo7074 The transmission on this truck is a 10 speed, which is built like a 5 speed but each gear additionally has sort of a range splitter between direct drive and overdrive, this way you get more ratios with fewer gears. Direct drive gears are kinda like gears 1-4 on a normal car transmission, optimized for normal slow driving, there is enough torque to drive uphill and all. Overdrive is kinda like the 5th gear, offering better fuel economy on highway cruising because the engine doesn't have to rev that high, and of course gives better top speed at the cost of lower torque. The truck has 5 direct gears and 5 overdrive, you switch between them by using the range splitter in game, low range = direct and high = overdrive. It's only one of several possible irl solutions of getting many gear ratios on a truck, and each one requires slightly different shifting methods. For example some require you to shift 1L-1H-2L-2H etc., others 1L-2L-...-1H-2H..., others more complex patterns. What they all have in common is that you shouldn't stay in high range/overdrive when accelerating from a standstill and driving at low speed like in the video. It's the equivalent of trying to accelerate the car from a stop in like 3rd gear. Of course clutch will be unhappy with this, the engine wants to rev but the gears don't give enough torque for it so it slips, causing overheating. With a trailer attached, it would have been a lot more noticable, driving wouldn't be as smooth as here.
