Driver 2 Walkthrough - Rio Mission 7: Chase the Gun Man

Tanner runs inside the house only to find Jones lying on the ground bleeding... it seems Vasquez got to Jones first. As Tanner looks over Jones's body, he hears gunshots outside and sees a gun man fleeing. After a brief shootout, the gun man gets in a car and drives off. Jones regains conciousness and tells Tanner to go chase the gun man down. Time for some revenge...

the most sportive play that I've ever seen on this mission well done what I did was restart the mission hundred times until I get 1:32 time limit at the start of the mission. On that time limit you can overtake the gun man at beginning then keep him kissing your tail with constant speed and it will be the fastest mission in the game.

This is maybe say 1 of 3 missions I remember REALLY well from Driver 2. Incredibly frustrating. One thing I really liked from Driver 2 was the cut scenes and when you went back to play on from where you were there was like a "previously on" splice reel. Also, at the end of the game, "Just Dropped In" was a masterful choice to play imo

Damn right bro... And worse, I was like 8 years-old! I tried it, litteraly, for days and i always fell to the cliff and then I found the trick... dont try to ram it out of the road, just slightly hit him and try to keep the same speed. It seems simple, but it is nearlly impossible. When I pulled it of, you should have seen the look on both my brothers face! Priceless!

Thanks, buddy!!! YES, you can place yourself in front of him as soon as you hit the road out of the building green zone!!! All you have to do is to act quick!, choose the first car you face as soon as the game starts, SLAM on the gas like Hell and cut to the right between the trees (he would take the bend correctly). That makes you lead his way. That's the easiest part.

I hated this mission so much. Accidentally hit a tree, hit a stupid small stone you can`t on the side of the roads, the stupid randomized traffic, the enemy car that is heavy like a tank and stick at the floor like gum. It was such a relief finishing the mission but it took so many tries and nerves.

If by "permanent lag" you mean the game slowing down, that wasn't coded into the game. That's the PS1 having a stroke trying to run Driver 2.

@Pablosuper90 You can do that only with the last hit. After you fill his damage scale, it's not scripted anymore. The probability for that to happen is obviously very low.

So if you try crashing into the gunman for the last hit, since that car still has the infinite mass at the time of the collision, you'll be chucked away hard as if you crashed into a wall, while the gunman just eases into slowing down.

Believe me man, as you have seen in the video, there were some really close calls with this one. 2:05 I will never forget... my hands were fucking shaking like hell. I was so freakin' nervous about messing this one up. When I finally did manage to stop him, my heart was beating so fast and I was sweating bullets. This is one hell of a mission to play.

This is one of the most frustrating levels I've evr played in anygame. After millions of tries I somehow luckily managed to jam my car in front of the target car and it kept ramming me from behind until its damage meter filled up. That was the only way I could beat it, theres no way I could do it normally. Equally as hard as the final level in Driver 1.

Know something funny? he actually picked the right car for this chase, the yellow Mercedes Benz is a way more faster than the red Ford Corcel GT most people use since you start the mission close to it. this mission is so designed to play against you that you need RNG luck that the Gun Man won't start the escape at full speed, so you can pick the faster and more reliable car to pursue a locomotive strengthened car and not fail the mission. Just to you know, the Ford Corcel GT in this game has a Speed value of 0E10, most of the basics cars(including the Mercedes Benz) in the game has a value of 1000, which makes according to "Comando52Colton" list, The Fifth fastest car in the game losing by almost every basic car in the game(even the Vegas Limo and Ambulance) and only surpassing the heavy vehicles(buses, Semi and trucks), making the Ford Corcel GT the slowest light car in the entire game(not only the city of Rio), so the programmers for this level, was really trolling us with this stupid unfair and borderline impossible mission.

This is one of the hardest missions, took me forever to beat. My advice is: Try to get your car in front of him, try to block his way. He will then keep ramming you while you keep braking. The Damage will fill up fast. Don't even bother trying to smash into him because, well, you probably know it only makes your car get bounced away.

HOW TO BEAT THIS GODDAMNED MISSION: Watch the time. If the mission starts with 1:50 left, restart the mission. If it starts with 2:10, 2:40 or more, you can try your luck. Why? With less time, the AI car will drive like a maniac and you can't stand a chance. With more time, the AI car will "slow down" sometimes, especially in the first moves, allowing you to overtake him in the first bend. When you overtake, let the car ram yours from behind, but DON'T let him ram you hard or you will spin and fail. Let him ram you gently, by accelerating a little. You can beat him in seconds if you follow this.

Man this mission is one of the hardest I've played in me life. One moment you thought you were gonna do it and you would smash into another car or drop off the cliff 20 seconds later. After completing driver 1 president mission I wasn't gonna let this beat me. I must have played the mission 200 times in a row to beat the level. I beat it! After 6 hours of constantly sitting in chair and staring in my laptop, my eyes are hurting, my palms and fingers are stoned. I fuckin beat it!!!! I'm dancing like an idiot. You know what? With all my sincerety I say honestly: "Devs of this level are sick fucks!". Game is not supposed to be so ridiculously hard. Game is cheating, car of gunman is with scripted train physics, nobody can chage its trajectory, it's on goddamn rails, even traffic is programmed to avoid gunman. When I brake the script and riding in front of him, he sends me in the sky and of course game over. I swear, one time(maybe the 5th hour of my tries) he had pushed me over the unbreakable fence and I was caged there, I was about to desperately scream like a lunatic. Even when I push gunman from behind, sometimes, his car somehow pushing me back and I'm losing control! May I ask HOW? Well, how about a trees, which a little bit wider than they look? How about a walls(fence) with breaks in texture, which could you stop immideatly if you barely touched it? And forgot to mention car we've got for this mission is steering like shit, steer on left or right a little more you're fucked, a little scratch from traffic here you go the fucking uncontrollable skid of doom. Seriously, this level must not be so hard, it's not about a player's skill, it's about a pure luck. What were they thiking? It would be nice to make a mission when you must scratch(your hit will do min damage) a car with train physics, it will never mistake and ride in rails, and it will have an acceleration twice faster than the player, set a heavy traffic on narrow road to maximise price of mistake and Cherry on the top let's set a time limit to make it near impossible! Muhaha!👹 A man(or team) who is in charge of this mission should never do games again. It not a challenge, it's trolling the fans of Driver series. Even President's Run(which is ridiculously hard too) has more logic and real physics. Forgot to mention, this chase has 4 or 5 scenarios of gunman's driving style and traffic, I could do something only in two of them and have won in slowest start of gunman. Advise you to restart until the slowest scenario(when you can hit him before the first cross). I did do max damage in first crossroads(about a half) just driving close from right of him while turning to the right with him to fill the damage-meter, and on the cliffs try to be ahead of cheating bustard. If he is only 1-2 hit to be done, and you're losing, don't panic, chase him and cut path even on cliffs, and do your last push, I was about to give up, but just decided not to restart my last push has worked. And listen to me, dev of this level, wish you to chase the gunman in Hell forever, until you'll be really sorry for all you've done to all these poor people, fans of Driver games...

Of all the thoughtless missions in this game, this one takes the cake. The gunman's car, because it needs to follow its path, seems to weigh 50 metric tons and bounces you like a ping pong ball in addition to other cars. To make matters worse, the trees have hit boxes much bigger than their graphics, the white fences have invisible pieces protruding that stop you in your tracks, the distance to make you "lose" him is needlessly short, the framerate keeps varying or slowing down to a crawl and theres a low time limit to top it all off. Yup that was my rant about this 21 years old shitty sequel to a great game.

After hours of trying, millions of restarts I finally beat it. I got it with Jones' car (Red one) and I got him just when he passed the underpass (Freeway). How did I do this impossible thing, you may ask? Get into Jones' car and get infront of the gunman on the big road where you exit the curvy road. Let him just slightly touch your rear-bumper and keep braking slightly so he keeps tapping/scraping your back. This takes some practice, but is rewarding!

Oh my God, I just spent over 3 hours on this... The ONLY way for me to ride was to overtake him almost at the start and then let him crash into me until his lifebar ran out. That way I finished the mission in about 20 seconds. Yes, it is possible, but you have to be able to stay in line with the gunman while he crashes into you, and you have to be VERY lucky

Here's a really big, useful hint for everyone: Try to play this mission when the start timer is at either 2:08 or 2:09. Restart until you get those. The gunman drives on much, much easier scripted routes on those timer presets. And remember that: the gunman is scripted, so you have to scrape their car lightly and maintain contact to do damage. DO NOT try charging or ramming into their car.

The first time I was ever able to beat this level was out of pure luck. After many failed attempts, there was one spot where the T-Bird failed to cut across the grass before entering the mountains. That was when I made it in front of the gunman and had him rub up against the rear of my car. I was able to damage him one bar at a time and I completed the mission. I performed the happiest dance and delivered the much needed middle finger towards this mission.
