This is one of my favourite of their songs. Thank you, JJ.

The D on the chorus can be played xx0770. It took me a while to figure it out, but one day afew years back I sat in on a friend's session at Tony Harris' place (engineer on Fables) and he told me Peter Buck had borrowed his guitar a 'Suzuki Three S' for the acoustic on this song and would I like to play it? the tone was identical and that D chord sounded really great.

JJ, I just wanted to thank you for something. I was really struggling with fingerstyle for about a year, and I really couldn't wrap my head around the 'independent thumb' idea. But learning 'Going to California' from you gave me a slight idea about it. I practised the intro and that little interlude in the verse till I got it. And then when I found your 'Buckets of Rain' cover, I was able to figure it out just by watching you play. I finally get what fingerstyle is, all thanks to you.

Digging the R.E.M. love this song, thanks for the video

Been studying tons of R.E.M. songs and learning them the past few months. Supposedly Peter sometimes plays some of the main riff on the upper frets, but not always, not sure why that is. (The latter "descending" few notes of it) But, this way is a lot easier!

After getting a used Tele and tuning it to open G i really dug into your Keef videos. Super helpful, fun stuff. Now I got a Ric 330 and am scouring youtube for REM stuff. It seems you only have this one and "Can't Get There From Here". Pity. Nice demo of Buck's chording and riffing. A big help for me getting some insight into how Buck thinks about chords and melody. Like you, I am partial to their older pre -'90's stuff but I do think "Monster" was a cool effort.

If you're sill playing REM, I've got a few videos up. Always welcome ideas and suggestions. What color 330 did you get? Love mine!

This is a great job as always. Think though the train track riff on the bass strings goes e-b-d-b, f#-a-d-a, g-b-d-b, f#-a-d-a.

Well this was kinda creepy. I was just watching the REM by MTV documentary and they showed a clip of Peter Buck playing this song and picked up the guitar I keep by the recliner to strum the chords he was playing then I log on and you posted this exact song. Wow.....lol

+Stephen Pinder It's what they opened all of the Fables tour with (when I saw then back in 1985). I think that's why our drummer wanted to open with it for awhile. I'm nowhere near as talented as James James, though. This is just a hobby for me.

Stephen Pinder I'm in Richmond, VA. Saw them at the mosque in 1985. At William and Mary in 1986 and 87. I went to college after and did not follow them too much after that. I've enjoyed getting back in to the IRS years. Truly great stuff.

I agree. I think I picked up on them about the time you had other prerogatives. Saw them in Lexington and Louisville KY.
