I think 50% of it, is drivers not doing the tug test. This driver actually seemed pretty cool, I like him, and he practically admitted his mistake of not doing the tug test. The other 50%, I think is due to worn out king pins, as that was the cause of the previous one I believe, it was completely worn out and needed replaced, wouldn't lock!

During my training, I learned that mistakes can happen. As long as you are honest about them, your employer will likely retain you. In this case, his company will probably require him to undergo "corrective training." Essentially, this involves being closely monitored for a few days to ensure he is following the proper procedures. It's definitely better than getting fired. getting fired.

I know of a couple of drivers that lost their trailers because of the grease build up on in the 5th wheel jaws, but again, that is something the driver should be paying attention to. For me, it was great! Dolly down, disconnect air lines then hit the button, pull out slightly, drop your air bags then you were on your way. While it is indeed true, that the trailer was not fully loaded, I'm still impressed at the durability strength, of that synthetic shackle, to hold 23,000 pounds of tension. Of course, thats probably cut in half, since each shackle on each side, takes half the load amount right, even distribution of weight handling and all that. This is probably the first time I've heard of an electronic kingpin lock. The driver seemed cool to me, he actually took ownership of his mistake, and he learned to always do the tug test! The only way that electronic release works is if the tractor and trailer brakes are both pulled out and you have your foot on the brake pedal. This is 100% driver error, regardless of what the driver may say. Poor pre trip inspection or no pre trip inspection. The first thing at which I look is to see if my fifthwheel is still locked onto the jaws by sticking my head under the trailer. These newer generation of drivers are spoiling it for us seasoned veterans.

With the trailer too high, as the driver said, I think the king pin slid over the fifth wheel. The fifth wheel looked like a skid mark was there. The tug test would have felt positive. As the turn progressed, the grease let the trailer slide to the left and that was where it was. Good lift. Have good days!

Interesting to see the soft shackles. Feels like the rope crafting skills from the sailing ship era. Though made with 21st century materials. I was a bit unnerved that you went under the trailer with it only resting on the edge of the truck. (Somewhere a European Health and Safety guy has gone for a lie down.) I had a thought the other week 💭 - - - it might be useful to have the cable rods electricians use to pull wires, or just a 10-12 foot fibreglass pole for when you all have to get chains and straps under the dodgy loads. Even a 3m length of pvc overflow pipe would be safer than getting underneath. 👍🧙♂️
