I think 50% of it, is drivers not doing the tug test. This driver actually seemed pretty cool, I like him, and he practically admitted his mistake of not doing the tug test. The other 50%, I think is due to worn out king pins, as that was the cause of the previous one I believe, it was completely worn out and needed replaced, wouldn't lock!

The only way that electronic release works is if the tractor and trailer brakes are both pulled out and you have your foot on the brake pedal. This is 100% driver error, regardless of what the driver may say. Poor pre trip inspection or no pre trip inspection. The first thing at which I look is to see if my fifthwheel is still locked onto the jaws by sticking my head under the trailer. With the trailer too high, as the driver said, I think the king pin slid over the fifth wheel. The fifth wheel looked like a skid mark was there. The tug test would have felt positive. I was a bit unnerved that you went under the trailer with it only resting on the edge of the truck. (Somewhere a European Health and Safety guy has gone for a lie down.) I had a thought the other week 💭 - - - it might be useful to have the cable rods electricians use to pull wires, or just a 10-12 foot fibreglass pole for when you all have to get chains and straps under the dodgy loads. Even a 3m length of pvc overflow pipe would be safer than getting underneath. 👍🧙♂️

This is definitely driver error. Driver failed to ensure the trailer was on the fifth wheel, and the locking jaws were engaged around the king pin. There’s no excuse or argument. This excuse the locking jaws released automatically is nonsense, as the driver would’ve had to move the lever. Same condition applies to move the fifth wheel slide to adjust weight, for scaling loads. I reviewed the video and noticed the release arm, with no auto mechanism for auto locking jaws. This driver provided a phony excuse to nature and cause of dropping the trailer on its proverbial nose. Also, please note the release arm was fully extended outward while the incompetent driver was backing to re-hook the trailer from the wrecker. This further demonstrates no auto unlock/lock.
@steven.h0629Ай бұрын
Why would the Supervisor and Driver both say these rigs remote unlock? Perhaps it's both? Makes sense for a manual backup to have a handle if the remote release fails, right?

@@steven.h0629 Simple, the air cylinder for the auto lock/unlock is located right of center of the fifth wheel adjustment nut. This unit was not equipped. And I don’t care about he said she said. @@steven.h0629 Also, this function of auto locking jaws are primarily used for yard jockeys, in which moves countless trailers in the yard, to and from a dock, or from the yard to a maintenance facility. The yard driver just attaches the air lines, and all other functions are automatic. This includes the air bag and the hydraulic rail, in which lifts the nose of the trailer without adjusting the landing gear. They are not typically for road use, as the cost is very considerable.

Inexperienced driver, because he should have raised his suspension OR lowered the landing legs, then slammed under the trailer and MOST IMPORTANT do a TUG TEST to make sure you have the trailer locked into the fifth wheel. If the lock fails, then the driver is in the clear. One tip I would advise team PEPE, lift the trailer and set it down on the ground and NEVER back onto the tractor unit. The landing legs could be damaged and or there could be other damage that is unseen. The trailer should be returned to the yard and the load transhipped to another trailer. If the lock failed on the tractor unit, then it needs to be inspected for why and repaired and not sent down the road again where it could fail again. The trailer should be inspected before going back on the road too, which is why team PEPE should never assist with reattching the trailer to the tractor unit. Why do I say the above, many years driving and shunting articulated trucks and having been distracted by another driver when hooking up, I dropped a trailer when I pulled off the loading bay and took a turn in the yard at 5mph and the trailer came off. I have the T shirt!
