Although dispatch apparently said it might be a cardiac related issue, I would put money on the fact that it was instead a diabetic related issue. Several years ago I actually implemented a civilian traffic stop because an elderly gentleman whose blood sugar had gone way out of control was all over the place, in the wrong lanes, and had no idea he was doing anything wrong. When I finally got him stopped by stopping in front of him, it was quite evident that he had no clue where he was or what was happening. Fortunately, just like this event, no one was hurt, and everything got cleared up.

I agree with you, my brother has type 1 diabetes. He hasn't started driving yet but when he does he's required to check his sugar before driving to make sure it's in the required range, and not heading out of it.

I'm reminded of a time I called 911 on an elderly driver with a medical issue. What drew my attention as I walked to university was that she drove onto the walking path and I actually had to move into the bushes to avoid getting hit. Then she stopped and was looking around with this really dazed expression on her face. I got her license plate and asked her if she was ok, she didn't respond. I knocked on her window, she looked at me and looked away, again no response. Then she looked like she was thinking of driving again so that was when I backed off and called 911 because pedestrian loses a fight with a car. I made it clear nI thought it was most likely a medical issue because she reminded me of my elderly relatives when they got low blood sugar or were sundowning. I gave a description of her vehicle and as she drove off a play by play of where she was going and what she did until I couldn't see her anymore (she hit a water fountain, knocked her mirror off at a phone pole, and nearly had a head on all in the space of about 30 seconds). A police officer called me back later and explained it was a medical issue and that they weren't planning to press charges and asked if I was ok with that since she almost hit me. I absolutely was, there's nothing criminal about having a medical crisis, IMO.

It's worrying that so few people even noticed the oncoming vehicle until it was right upon them. They didn't notice the traffic ahead behaving erratically, and the number of people who just carried on without slowing or try warning vehicles behind. Thankfully there were a couple of intelligent, sensible people who tried to flag down the driver and some that had the sense to put on their hazard warning lights, alert other drivers and bring the speed of traffic down. Well done to them and the driver who finally stopped it.

It’s called in-attentional blindness. While driving you are constantly looking at signs, mirrors and other cues that you look for everyday. They probably all saw the car and their brain just couldn’t register the fact a car was driving right at them. This is the reason so many drivers appeared to avoid a collision at the last moment.

I’m incredibly impressed with the citizens that brought this to an end. My grandpa always used to tell me there is two ways to do things. The right way and the wrong way. He continued that doing things the wrong way will usually seem easy and provide the least resistance. While doing the right thing will prove difficult. The only way we can make difficult things easier is by practicing and doing them with frequency. This Jeep driver showed he has made difficult decisions his whole life. Kudos

You can lose vision, you can also lose your mind. Quite literally becoming a vegetable. Having multiple parts of your brain lose function, but still retaining enough to continue driving and crashing a vehicle without EVER being able to understand what's happing is an extremely sad and real thing. Often, people who are in situations like this might arrive at the hospital and not recognize their loved ones ever again. Think of it like this. You're a computer and somehow 90% of your operating and data files were just deleted. The remaining data isn't even enough to feed yourself, just to stay on. It happens man. Don't always assume it's something malicious. The difference between you caring and not, could be life or death. It could be the difference between someone hugging his kids again or him being scared every time they hug him, because he has no idea what they are. Not who they are, but what they are. Are they monsters? Are they trying to hurt me? My grandfather almost walked himself to death in Queens, N.Y. he walked 12 miles, walked on to a highway and traveled a mile up the highway and somehow traveled back down. I like to think that someone stopped him and drove him off the highway. But they left him. It was already night time and he wasn't found until 2pm the next day in blistering 90 degree heat. He was missing from 6pm to 2pm. No food, no water and having a stroke. If someone had the decency to just ask. If someone had the decency to say "Something might be wrong." It's possibly my grandfather wouldn't have had to wear a diaper and a catheter for the next 10 years of his life. Someone caring sooner could've meant he wouldn't have become a vegetable. Unable to talk. Barely even human, other than his bodily functions, there was no mind. He had a stroke.

@@SixSnax I was hit, in 2006, by a junky in a car. I spent five years in a comma because of the N.H.S malpractise. When I did come around the same N.S.H left me to get on with things. The first thing is to know how to wash. I did not know how to wash. It took months and then I came across wet wipes. Some months later I began to understand how to wash, and shaving was hell. I suffer from brain damage, and the things, like losing sight, then gaining it, is hell on earth because if I move it makes me extremely ill. I have also woken up in areas of England, not knowing how I have gotten there, and always late at night, and have had to wait, under the stars for a bus out, next morning. I could go on and on to detail the troubles I have, and still do, have to cope with. I have had two heart attacks, to date, and it took me, daily, to master the English language, which at first meant I could not talk because of lack of words. I still keep up writing, and where possible reading, the later very difficult as nothing stays in. Because I am a child of the 50's there is an in-born fighting things, and so I have managed to take things in hand, no sorry over what I suffer, no victim hood. I am now retired, which I did not want to be, but cannot help it as weak, and get confused. You get on with things. 12 years on and now, through persistance, I can hold my own in an argument and my writing skills almost back to normal because of daily writing and correcting myself in this. People so easily give up. One thing more, never, never, never have a tv or radio in the home as these effects mental growth

Each incident I was involved with was a diabetic attack and the driver had no clue what had happened but they eventually passed out. This is a scary thing to happen but good people like we have here are great to see helping one another out.

Diabetic was my first guess. It causes you to lose muscle control and black out.. it comes and goes as the body releases glucagon reserves. I keep my glove box full of glucose tabs, were a pump, and a continuous glucose monitor that alerts me in advance of issues.

I figured it was medical as an RN it was telling. The car did slow down at times pulling over like they knew something wasn’t right. Probably as they lost oxygenation and began having arrhythmias it’s amazing they were able to even drive! I saw one other video where police pulled a medical emergency over for going very slow and swerving. The car took a while to pull over for police. They ended up penning it in like in this case. Only the police automatically assumed the driver was DUI. When in fact he was a brittle diabetic with blood sugar major problem which makes a person seem intoxicated if you don’t know the things to check. Police in that video unfortunately put the older man on the ground having their weapon drawn. When your blood sugar is that bad the person cannot think straight either. It wasn’t until the ambulance driver came and knew that diabetes could be the problem and checking his blood sugar which takes only a min or two saved this man. Don’t always assume they are DUI. Thanks to all of these citizens in your video for the great help in stopping this and getting help for this driver! Often times you might also see elderly dementia patients drive like this. The people on the road were amazing stopping this man. I hope the people in the otter car they hit and knocked them off the road were ok! Great people there too in checking on that car!

@@rickyz1nine00kaw3 I’m so sorry for your loss. These days not only are lawsuits becoming more frequent against police for their abuse, but charges are being brought against them as well! There’s no excuse for that behavior. I understand police have to protect themselves against unruly possibly DUI/Angry people, but I wish they would take a second to observe as well for medical conditions! Dementia patients have very obvious signs that police should be aware of just as you stated. If they are not, maybe an ER physician can provide instruction on how to care for sick people while at the same time protecting themselves if needed. Sometimes dementia patients will take their prescribed medication wrong accidentally which might result in seizures or many other problems as well. Some patients have newly diagnosed minor dementia and other a more severe case and should not be driving. However, they do find ways to get keys in their homes and leave. This is very common for them to do. Elderly (and even young people who have hypermobile joint conditions) will also dislocate joints very easily resulting in surgery if the soft tissue in and around that joint is torn. If their spine is injured they could also end up with paralysis. Many elderly are on blood thinners which can cause major bleeding if they get a minor scrape or cut. It is so difficult for loved ones to manage their family member with dementia. I lost my mother to dementia as well. I feel for you, and your family. If there is ever a need for help in taking care of a loved one or even help dealing with grief, Social Workers at any hospital can help when this is needed. My thoughts are with you❣️

That's how I got hit crossing the road. Someone stopped for me, and the person behind them passed them on the right and hit me. Luckily it was a Rav 4 and it hit my pelvis, which is the strongest bone in your body. He was going 50 to 60 km but I only had a small fracture on my inferior pubis ramus. Found out years later that being hit at that speed has only a ten percent survival rate.

What really stands out is the poor observation skills of many drivers, switched off, on a one way road, thinking they are safe and with no expectation of pending disaster. Don't just focus on the rear end of the car in front ! Scan, constantly scan. Whilst a heart attack was bandied around as the cause, this may have caused hypoxia (lack of oxygen to vital organs) or maybe even a diabetic episode (which I consider more likely) because of its duration.

They are so blinded by the fact that the Jeep driver probably saved someone else serious injury or possibly death & saved the possibility of thousands of dollars of more damage. All they see is saving a few bucks by denying any claims by the Jeep owner. That's where I'm different. If I see the opportunity to assist, I will. I have been threatened by bosses before, but those threats land on deaf ears. I have many times as an over the road truck driver stopped to help others out from many different dangerous situations. It's all good as I'm sure the Jeep driver slept pretty good that night knowing he just saved someone's life.

Thank you for providing the background. Often times on KZbin when there’s a video showing something like this, people in the comments like to jump to conclusions and assume the person is drunk or on drugs or is a criminal. This kind of behavior though looked like it had to be either an elderly driver who’d gotten confused after getting mistakenly routed into an oncoming roadway or someone having a medical emergency. I hope that when people are behind the wheel on the actual roads that they’re thinking more about how to help than how to judge, because while these things are fairly infrequent, they’re a lot more frequent than people might guess. Outstanding work by the driver of that Jeep at the end. _VERY few_ people would have done what they did, as well as they did it. I wonder if they have a background as a first responder or medical person.
