Driver's View Tram 109 Box Hill to City

WOW, there are some memories there, I used to sell the Herald on the corner of Union road about 1969, there was a supermarket on the corner where the wine shop is, a State Savings Bank of Victoria on the Scheele St corner, and petrol station on Langford St corner. Just a couple of shops down from the newsagents was the best pie shop in the world. Well, that's how I remember it as a nine or ten-year-old. Your videos always make me smile, especially this one, it was very close to my old home on Wandsworth Rd. By the way, the tram only went to Union Rd back then. Thanks for bringing a tear to my eye with some great memories. Just for a bit of trivia, the MMBW or Melbourne Water manhole next to the white car at 15:34 drops straight down, then there is a short tunnel to almost the center of the tram tracks then another vertical drop to the sewer main. I worked on these mains sometime in the 90s.

I find that route from Box Hill all the way to Port Melbourne, is quite a relaxing way to spend a few hours. Then grab some fresh fish and chips, and head back to my hotel in the City ☺️

When I lived in Melbourne, for a while I went to Box Hill Tafe, and I lived in Melton, depending on what time i woke up and train I got, if I was early enough i could jump on the 109 and ride it to the Tafe in Box Hill. Otherwise I would have to get the train out to box hill and Tram back to the Tafe.

I expect that quite a few people would travel ‘the wrong way’ on the tram to get to the station, then train to the city and VV.

The junction at 16:10 would have to be surely one of very few, if not the only, tram junction in Melbourne with a Give Way sign rather than a set of signals.

I did the outbound 109 video today, and of course it is just the same. As you say, probably the only road junction without lights. Port Junction has none, but that is not in the street.

@@tressteleg1 I had the same thought. And then I thought about the likes of roundabouts along Mount Alexander Road and in South Melbourne... but (at least for Mount Alexander Road) the trams have priority.

Well, they are not tram junctions. In my time as a driver, I hit cars in roundabouts about 3 times. Drivers forget that trams go through the middle while cars go round the circle, then CRUNCH.

Great video. It'll be interesting to watch it again in a few years and see how much has changed. 12:09 St. George's Hospital: as seen in Mad Max (1979), and where my eldest son was born in 1988!

I remember traveling to Box Hill to visit friends in the late 90’s. I think it was by train, I have a recollection of Hitachi’s at dusk.

If you want to get to Box Hill faster, go by train. It’s a few minutes walk between tram and train, but when I did this I was walking for ages trying to find the tram, so poor was the signage at the station.

Richard that is one noisy tram. I would have bailed out after two stops and caught a cab.

On a line like this, very little is likely to have changed in 3 years. Nevertheless I will be in Melbourne from Thursday and if the weather is not typical winter Melbourne, hopefully I can do the line outbound.

The Eastern Freeway is parallel and not far away. That is where the traffic is. It’s not so easy to squeeze new freeways into Sydney. I know about the traffic there - I had my car there last month.
