Driver San Francisco is one of those true cult classics. It's a game that I had always heard my friends and the racing game community as a whole praise for being one of those true one-of-a-kind passion projects. I missed out on it and put it low on my to-play list as the last Driver I had played was Driv3r, and the less said about that game, the better. 12 years after its initial release, it was finally time to play Driver San Francisco, and boy was I ever shocked at what I had been missing out on. Driver San Francisco combined ingenious approaches to how not just racing games told stories, but the medium as a whole. While it may be fresh in my mind, I can easily say that Driver San Franciso goes up into my favourite racing games of all time.

@@ashar8192 no, it's half assed, it's attempting to be unique but is clearly playing it safe, otherwise they would have gone all in and fully cell shaded the game, but that wouldn't appeal to casuals who want hyperrealistic cars so they settled on the characters being cell shaded and only the characters. Plus, having some fancy driving effect doesn't give the game personality, it's like putting a bow on a pig
@ashar8192
@ashar8192 Жыл бұрын
@@serperior2264 you are not the one to decide whether they are playing it safe or not. The direction was clear from the beginning, as you can see from the leaked Alpha gameplay. Just because they didn't cel shade everything doesn't make it half assed lmao. Also tell me one game that is not Automodellista that has similiar effects like Unbound? I will definitely remember Unbound for it's art style and it definitely makes it stands out compared to the other big arcade racers, even when the gameplay is lacking

@@ashar8192 -never said I was the one to decide, but I'm allowed to critique games, saying otherwise would just be trying to silence me -no, it does make it half assed, just because it was "clear from the beginning" doesn't mean it wasn't poorly implemented, plenty of people hate the cell shaded look and Criteron probably predicted this, therefore decided to make the entire rest of the game realistic to try and appease these people, this in contrast to games like Art of Rally or Need for Speed Nitro which both fully commit to their artsyles and actually stand out as unique because of it, without the driving effects, Unbound is almost indestiquishable from Heat -If it helps it stand out for you, then that's great, I actually personally like it myself, however, I'm disappointed they didn't go all the way with it like other games would have

I always loved the fact that the whole story felt like a TV series. Especially with the whole "Previously, on Driver San Francisco" cutaways. It's a shame there was never another Driver title being made, but I'm glad the series ended on a high note.

@rightbehindyou9398
@rightbehindyou9398 Жыл бұрын
@@purpleturtle8841 Fair enough, but what other issues does it have? I don't like how when you buy a paintjob/vinyl/rims you can't see it in the tuners anymore and have to go to HQ, and sometimes car physics in cutscenes break (due to one of the major updates), and it's always online connection which sucks and only hurts the game (and the players). That's all the issues I can name. Everything else in the game is a blast. People (who didnt even play the game) liked to slam on it too much because of hivemind mentality, while in reality TC1 is one of the greatest racing games ever made. It has a great car customization, the car spec feature is amazing, the map is still the most big AND detailed map in any game I've seen, the story is good (reminds of me driver), the general game style/aesthetic is impeccable (sadly ruined by Wild Run DLC), the music selection is very fitting and memorable (also reminds me of driver), the online/multiplayer is extremely well done (both PVP and PVE), and guess what, the handling is great if you take less than a minute to tinker in the handling options (even better with a steering wheel). I still play this game almost a decade later with my friends and there are almost no issues we run into, and if we ever do they're minor and quite rare. This is really one of those games that you have to play yourself and really soak in the atmosphere to vibe with it, and while we all have our opinions, the "Ehh" you gave this game is kind of insulting. (I don't mean to fanboy over this game that hard, but having spent the last decade playing mediocre to downright terrible racing titles that never innovate or improve on anything, I really started to appreciate older games like TC1 a lot more)
@rightbehindyou9398
@rightbehindyou9398 Жыл бұрын
@@Vegas70 Why are you making it sound like the car damage is so poor? It's better than FH2/3 that came out with 1-2 years difference. Driver SF came out 3 years prior from a different studio (although ivory tower did collaborate with reflections on TC1), but 2014/2015ish was the turning point where open world racing titles started having toned down car damage models, we don't know for sure why but we can assume it's at least partially because of licensing terms changing. And grid is a closed track simcade racer from 2008 anyway, not a fair comparison. Honestly sounds like a classic nitpick non-issue that people liked to complain about regarding TC1. Me and many others have been playing this game for nearly a decade and the car damage model never bothered us, and it's nice to have one at all unlike FH to this day having a few scratches and small dents and that's it. And going on even further, it seems that TC1 had a slightly better damage model prior to the 2015 Wild Run update (or as I consider it, a somewhat of a downgrade), which might be an even bigger indicator of licensing terms being the problem.

There's another really cool Easter Egg that you may or may not have noticed. It's a reference to both Back to the Future as well as the first Driver game. Basically if you buy a delorean and reach a speed of 88 mph, a side mission will unlock called Blast from the Past and guess what? It's a one on one recreation of the first mission from Driver 1, the infamous car park mission. It's such a cool easter egg, they truly poured their hearts out making this game

I also LOVED the fact that you could shift into a car in the middle of a live conversation between the driver and the passenger. Such a high level of immersion! There were hundreds of dialog lines written for this and you never had to listen to one of these twice. So an other totally awesome feature, never done before, never done again but the devs took the risk and were able to execute to absolute perfection!

The story in this game is something that is truly out of mind. An action film like story, hell even driving the cars (Specially from interior view) feels like playing a realistic game or something. This game is also ahead of many modern titles nowadays. I always had fun crashing cars with huge ass buses in the bridge, causing chaos everywhere. And then doing some insane glitches like the bus goes absolutely crazy when you damage it from the back constantly.

A fantastic game, a game that Ubisoft doesn't let you buy anymore. Probably because of licence problems. It's sad though, as this was a great game, unique in it's kind. 2nd person, detailed damage model, physics are almost BeamNG, fun selection of cars to play with. The game basically feels like a toybox filled with cars, part of it thanks to the story.

My favorite thing about the story is the way it balances the fact that nothing Tanner does in the coma has an effect on reality with keeping him relevant. Sure, he doesn't DO anything in the coma, but he does LEARN quite a bit from the TV in his room, and that lets him put together Jericho's plot while everyone else is running around in a panic.

I watched a video on it when I was 10 and was intrigued on it's story and mission. So when I got a PC I tried it out and it was unbelievable how intricate yet so smooth the game is. I kinda miss those in modern games. This is truely a gem. Also a specific mission, I think it's the one where you control the car in front of you. I remember that someone else made a video that 2nd person gameplay has been made in that mission that shows you controlling Tanner's car but inside the hummer following it.

A minor detail I love as well, not only with the steering wheel degrees, but also the fact that Tanner actually shifts in automatic cars. He actually has animations for center console and column shifters. Better wheel support and a manual transmission option would've been amazing.

Really impressive overlooked gem of a game. Sad that it didn’t set a benchmark as it should. There exists an old article on Eurogamer with an interview of the developers explaining in great detail the technical challenges they faced with this game, a great read.

We're in a stage of racing games right now of "Freedom, but to a fault." Like, giving someone who has never played a piano before a piano, and going "You're free to make music!" Someone who has never played a piano has more "freedom" to make noise than someone who has been a practiced pianist, and has the skills to know what noise is just noise, and what noise is actually pleasant music, this parallel can be applied to new racing games as well. you can do whatever you want in the recent forza games, but unless you have the knowledge and finesse to builld yourself a compelling story, and therefore game, given the VAST sandbox you are presented with, you're left just kinda playing in the sand, not building anything worth playing. You're not a dev, yet here the dev is giving you all the tools to build your game the way you want it, and going "Fine, do it yourself."

Man, what can i say? The production quality, your clear chill voice, and most importantly the topic of the video, they are all very well made. And i must say this, giving like to youtube videos these days is a hard task for me (due to the fact how much sh*t post and clickbait content exist) but this ART right here deserves an instant like! Pretty sure took a lot of time and effort to edit and montage this video and i really appreciate it.

One of my favourite racing games ever beaten only by nfs mw ‘05 and carbon. Replayed this game countless times, did all the side quests and races, played it online and still revisit it sometimes for nostalgia. Everything from the aesthetic to the driving engine i just love and look back to this day. Truly an underappreciated masterpiece.

So damn fun. I had a Logitech wheel/pedals/shifter setup I’d use to play this game on PC. I mapped E-brake to fourth gear on the Logitech shifter so it was (kinda) like ripping an E-brake to initiate a drift. Also, using the hood view in the Crown Vic PI during pursuits to get that police dashcam perspective was so fun. Very underrated title.

My favourite stuff was the different types of city missions -Car chases -Scaring instructors -Keeping people alive -Stopping bad things from happening -protection missions -that cable tv guy trying to capture wild driving But my Absolute favourite one was the kidnapping city mission, where you legit feel the tension with the kidnapper, the actual fear and horror from the dad and how driving on main roads felt like you were doing the wrong thing (you weren’t allowed to drive on them and you’d feel and hear music that you were doing the wrong thing) I’ll always appreciate this game❤

I didn't understand how cool the game was until I came back and played it a solid 5 years later and realized just how cool it was. The mission where tanner goes into cardiac arrest is one of my favorite missions in any game

There is one more game in which you can shift your mind between diffrent characters depending on task its called Clive Barker's Jericho (Shooter game). Whole concept was pretty interesting, i will try explain without spoilers... after first mission you are able to swap your mind with other people in your squad which have unique abilities, you also travel back in time backwards, first to world war 2, than medival and so on and so on, to a begining. each era you will be in have completly diffrent enemies etc. Definitly worth checking in this underrated gem.

One particular feature in this game that impressed me was the effect on some of the older cars supension when you stop. I don't know if there is a certain term for it. The whole car keeps bouncing after you brake. I haven't seen this level of detail in a game before or after Driver: San Francisco.

What I love about this game is how they introduced new cars in each chapter while keeping either 3, 4, or 2 cars from previous chapters in the new one. What I also love is how many cars that you’ve never been able to play before, just AI’s in other games, are now playable here. I just loved that and how they brought many underrated cars in the real world (imo) into this game. It really feel’s special in a way. And ofc I love the story. I’ve played this game since I was 4-5 years old and now 16, I still play it. This will always be my fav race car game.

I've heard that The Crew 1 ( and later The Crew 2 as well) should have originally been planned as a sequel to Driver SF. We got a different game but with a good Story nonetheless. I liked TC1 so much I bought the second one and was strongly disappointed, literally only one line in the whole game talking about something that was a part of TC1. The Summit in TC2 is what made me drop it (after getting the Platinum which I must say wasn't hard). Nothing new + Story not worth replaying made it not worth getting better parts or new cars.

Driver SF was and still is one of my all time favorite games. Quality car selection, a fun story, and a game the capitalized on the movie car chases of the past. It is so sad it didn’t get the respect it rightfully deserved. Even graphically it has definitely stood the test of time. The damage was far more believable than most titles even.

Thinking about this game always make me think about how the game is totally unique on its own. It has story that is so extra and yet at the same time is actually genius from narrative stand point. The licensed cars is a nice touch but the balance between the cars you'd see on roads commonly and high-end sports cars makes it click. It's sad that it fell victim to perhaps one of the worst business decisions in gaming, but I'm glad that this game gets recognition. I just wish that I could get my hands on this game to experience it myself.
