Driver (Very Old Demo) PlayStation - 1080p

The other day i was searching for old stuff and found this, a very old demo of the very first Driver game,
This Demo contains:
- One Mission,
- Two In-Game Demo-Play videos,
- Beta engine sound from the unused Buick GSX (Sadly the Buick GSX is not in the demo)
- Beta Police cars
- Beta fonts for the timer,
- Cars get wrecked much easier,
The Demo CD also contains the following playable Demos (Not featured in this video),

The one on the final game sounds like a small inline 4 engine, whereas this sounds more like a V8. Trouble is, that I think this is just a placeholder sound from Destruction Derby-games.

I think I know exactly what the engine sound in this demo is. It's actually sourced from the Mustang in "Bullitt" (1968). According to my theory, the developers originally wanted to emulate the sound of the "Bullitt" car, so they took a sample from the movie, like they did with the wheelskid (tires squealing), police siren, and the crashing sounds ALL being taken from the movie "The Driver" (1978). Unfortunately, the results didn't exactly match up to what the devs had in mind. While at sometimes you can make out the "Bullitt" engine, it usually has a much different tone compared to the original movie clip. Watch this video to compare what is heard in the demo to what is actually heard in the movie: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zqexp5Zvo5acoas This may explain why it was replaced with the much higher-pitched engine sound that is utilized in the final game. This demo here is from an early point in development, sometime before they gave the drivable car and "engine swap", or in other words switched to the engine sound used in the final game. However, the "Bullitt" engine STILL exists in the sound file directory! Better yet, it was carried over to the PC Port. I have the PC Port, and saw the sound files for myself! According to the PC Port File Directory (\Audio\sounds), the engine sound that is used is "incar.wav", the "Bullitt" engine sound that was used in this demo is "OUTCAR1.WAV". There is also another unused engine sound file which is "OUTCAR2.WAV". This is likely another scrapped engine sound file, probably cut because it sounded weak. In the PC Port, because of the scrapped engine files still existing in the audio files, you can swap names with the used engine sound ("incar.wav") with either one of the other engine sound loops ("OUTCAR1.WAV" and "OUTCAR2.WAV") to hear for yourself how each one sounds in-game. Again, all I said in my comment here was entirely my theory, and none of it was read online.

this particular song was indeed better in the beta/demo. I remember wanting back this engine sound as well when the game was released, but in retrospect it is very basic - but also charming. the final engine sound is objectively MUCH better and realistic. graphics were just a little better in the beta because there was no need for optimization yet. they had to remove building shadows in order to get the fps from "horrible" to "bad" in the final release. still great for PS1 though.

graphics was a bit downgraded in final version because the game was already pushin PS1 a lot and if they kept graphics as beta version ps1 would barely handle it with framerate drops XD

@@schlafanzyk Hey, the engine sound still exists in the game files of Driver! Better yet, it even made it into the PC Port, still unused. The used sound file is "incar.wav" while the original sound is "outcar1.wav". In the PC Port of the game, one can restore the original engine sound to working order by switching the file names of "incar.wav" and "outcar1.wav". The original engine sound is a sample of the Mustang from Bullitt (1968). However, the results weren't exactly what the developers had in mind, so they switched it to the much weaker and more high-pitched engine sound that is used in the final game.

Man I swear I remember having a Ps1 demo with driver, and it was just a mission, chase a guy i think, i always got lost, and when the time ran out a big explosion came from the center of the map and you could race the "wave" a bit :P I can't find that ANYWHERE.....

OddsomeOddy Yeah they seem to keep up better. But if they kept it the same then the President's Run wouldn't be possible to be lol cops would be slamming your ass the whole way.

I think the cops are not AIs but controlled by a real player

pretty sure those are not CPU driven police cars... just look at how the front wheels are turning normally like a player is driving them instead of flickering side to side which happens when their AI is constantly adjusting paths in the final game. they are most likely just "multi-layered replays" (similar to scripted/recorded chase mission paths), driven by hand and compiled into a single demo replay. either that, or they later changed the update cycle rate on path creation of AI chase cars which caused the hectic steering flicker. but it seems more likely that AI path creation was not presentable at this point in development, so they just pre-recorded a chase to show off.
